Dietary supplement is a product that contains vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids, enzymes, and/or other ingredients intended to supplement the diet. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has special labeling requirements for dietary supplements and treats them as foods, not drugs.

Manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplements and dietary ingredients are prohibited from marketing products that are adulterated or misbranded. That means that these firms are responsible for evaluating the safety and labeling of their products before marketing to ensure that they meet all the requirements of DSHEA and FDA regulations.

Wars of ancient history were about possessions, territory, power, control, family, betrayal, lover's quarrel, politics and sometimes religion.

But we are in the Modern era and supposedly more educated and enlightened .

Think about this. Don't just brush off these questions.

  • Why is RELIGION still involved in WARS? Isn't religion supposed to be about PEACE?
  • Ask yourself; What religion always campaign to have its religious laws be accepted as government laws, always involved in wars and consistently causing WARS, yet insists that it's a religion of peace?

WHY??

There are only two kinds of people who teach tolerance:
  1. The Bullies. They want you to tolerate them so they can continue to maliciously deprive you. Do not believe these bullies teaching tolerance, saying that it’s the path to prevent hatred and prejudice.
  2. The victims who are waiting for the right moment to retaliate. They can’t win yet, so they tolerate.

Jenaila Prulla and Kriz Lim fashioned out a pair of victories each in varying fashions to share Most Valuable Player honors in the Palawan Pawnshop-Palawan Express Pera Padala (PPS-PEPP) Angeles City leg regional age group tennis in Pampanga on Monday.

Prulla whipped Angely Atos, 6-0, 6-1, in the girls’ 14-under finals then the Bulacan find upended top seed Achaia Cabahug, 6-1, 6-0, to claim the premier 18-U diadem in the event presented by Slazenger, with Dunlop as the official ball and backed by Rep. Carmelo “Jonjon” Lazatin.

Prulla didn’t see action in the 16-under play but teamed up with Adriana Cabahug to repulse Charisse Bajet and Tristen Kitong, 8-4, in the 14-under doubles and partnered with Martina Naredo to rout Achaia Cabahug and Lucy Inalves, 8-2, in the 18-under doubles to emerge with four titles overall.

Kriz, from Urdaneta, Pangasinan, dominated sibling John twice, scoring a 4-2, 4-2 romp in the 10-under unisex finals, then hacking out a 2-6, 6-1, (10-7) decision to nail the 12-under crown in the Group 2 tournament sponsored by Palawan Pawnshop, through President and CEO Bobby Castro at the Angeles City Tennis Club.

Lim fell short by one plum as he settled for the 10-U doubles diadem with John in an 8-1 rout of Jeremiah Labasano and Ethan Tiotuico in the tournament sanctioned by the Unified Tennis Philippines, made up of PPS-PEPP, Cebuana Lhuillier, Wilson, Toby’s, Dunlop, Slazenger and B-Meg,

Blas, a member of the national track team from 1993 to 2004, has expressed his gratitude to the people who continuously support his tournament.

"I would like to thank everyone who made this year's tournament possible. Thank you to all the participants and congratulations to the winners. See you in the 7th Fil-Am Criterium Race," said Blas, a member of the national track team from 1993 to 2004, in an interview on Tuesday.

Blas, a native of Malabon City, migrated to the United States in 2005. He was a sophomore nursing student at the Arellano University before he left and continued his studies in the US. He is now working as assistant nurse at the St. Vincent Medical Center in California.

"I never left cycling when I moved to the US. As an athlete, I know that Filipino cyclists are good. I decided to join cycling clubs. I was a member of the Velo Lagrange Pro 1/2 cycling team, now I am with the Southbay Wheelman team," said Blas, an enlisted member of the Philippine Army during his time in the national team.

With the support of his cycling friends in the US, Blas was able to organize the Fil-Am Criterium Grand Prix for the past six years.

"My friends and teammates in the United States and the Philippines are very supportive of my advocacy. They donated most of the prizes for the tournament," said Blas.

"I am thankful to Richard Hiraga, the founder of GQ6 hydration supplements for providing the champion jersey, as well as Grace Manzano, Roy Cruz, Jun Villalobos, Carlo Ponce, Jim Meneses, and Fil-American triathlete Noriel Sinsuangco. These people have been helping me since the first Fil-Am Criterium race in 2012," said Blas, who won medals in the Southest Asian Games (SEAG).

The first Fil-Am Criterium Grand Prix was held at the Neopolitan Complex in Fairview, Quezon City. The following year, the tournament was held in Meycauyan, Bulacan. The next three stagings were at the Quezon Memorial Circle.

"As long as I can, I will continue to help our cyclists. The Fil-Am Criterium Grand Prix is my little way of giving back to the sport," said Blas, who broke the 1-km. national record in the UCI World Cup. He also eclipsed the national sprint record in the Asian Cycling Championships in Taiwan.

Blas was a silver medalist in the 1995 SEA Games in Chiang Mai, Thailand. He won the bronze in the 1-km. event and team pursuit in the 1997 SEAG in Jakarta, Indonesia. He also bagged the bronze in the team sprint and team pursuit in the 2001 SEAG in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Crimes down 36% in Central Luzon

By Princess Clea Arcellaz

WITH the continuous implementation of enhanced police operations and the resumption of Project “Double Barrel,” the Police Regional Office in Central Luzon (PRO-3) noted a 36-percent decrease in crime incidents in Central Luzon.

Chief Superintendent Amador Corpus, PRO-3 regional director, said they recorded 1,342 crimes from January 1 to March 18 of this year, lower by 761 cases than the 2,103 crimes recorded in the same period of 2017.

Corpus said a significant decrease was noted in murder, homicide, robbery, theft, physical injury, motornapping and rape cases.

While the region’s crime incidence was down, Corpus revealed that PRO-3’s crime clearance efficiency and crime solution efficiency simultaneously increased by 70.86 percent and 48.36 percent, respectively.

He noted that the police provincial office (PPO) with the highest decrease in crime rate was Bataan PPO (48.21 percent), followed by Nueva Ecija PPO (43.31 percent), Olongapo City Police Office (42.19 percent), Angeles City Police Office (39.90 percent), Pampanga PPO (37.02 percent), Tarlac PPO (35.93 percent), Bulacan PPO (30.57 percent) and Zambales PPO (22.22%), respectively.

“This significant decrease in focus and prevalent crimes can be attributed to the intensification of our anti-criminality measures particularly on motorcycle riding suspects and our resumed anti-drug campaign and the community's support and involvement in our crime prevention and control efforts," Corpus said.

Blueboy: ‘I’m not running for mayor’

Reynaldo G. Navales

ANGELES CITY -- Former Pampanga First District representative Francis “Blueboy” Nepomuceno said he will not seek for any elective position during the mid-term polls next year.

Nepomuceno, who is also a former mayor of this city, bared this during the Pampanga Press Club’s media forum at Park Inn by Radisson Clark last Tuesday.

Nepomuceno said that he is now happy with his private life which he described as “stress-free living.”

SunStar Pampanga learned that supporters are pushing the former official to run for mayor but the latter turned down the idea.

He however hinted that if he will run for an elective position next year, it will not be the city’s mayorship.

He is a son of former Angeles City’s politicians Francisco Nepomuceno and Juanita Nepomuceno, who both became governor of the province of Pampanga in the 70s.

At the same time, Nepomuceno informed the PPC members of his acquittal from corruption charges by some city officials which happened to be his political detractors.

According to him, he has no intention of filing counter charges against the officials.

“The truth shall set you free. Praise God. My Sandiganbayan case dismissed, thank you to all who supported me and believed in my innocence. And to all my political detractors, I forgive you,” Nepomuceno stated.

The Sandiganbayan Special Fourth Division has acquitted Nepomuceno of corruption charges which stemmed from a donation of vehicle to a non-government organization.

Norwegian pedophile deported at Clark

By Jun Ramirez

Bureau of Immigration (BI) officers have intercepted a Norwegian pedophile upon his arrival at the Clark International Airport (CIA) in Angeles City, Pampanga.

BI Commissioner Jaime Morente said that 29-year-old Kim Vegar Kristoffersen has been barred from entering the country following his conviction of string of sex offenses in his homeland.

“He was immediately excluded and booked on the first available flight to his port of origin,” Morente said of Kristoffersen.

The BI chief stressed that the Norwegian is just the latest arrested suspect in the bureau’s unrelenting campaign to thwart the entry of undesirable aliens, notably sex offenders.

He recalled that last year alone, BI personnel intercepted 187 registered sex offenders (RSOs) at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and other ports nationwide.

According to lawyer Ma. Antonette Mangrobang, BI spokesperson, Kristofferson flew all the way from Oslo, Norway to visit his 16-year-old Filipino boyfriend who lives in Concepcion, Tarlac.

Mangrobang said Nordic investigators were able to trace communications and money transactions between the two friends which enabled them to alert authorities here about Kristofferson’s scheduled trip to the Philippines.

“We have been very strict and vigilant in turning away these sex offenders because they pose a serious and real threat to Filipino children whom they might abuse if they managed to enter our country,” the BI official explained.

Citing a report from the International Justice Mission, a global NGO opposed to women and child trafficking, Mangrobang said Kristofferson was convicted four times in Norway for the crime of sexually molesting children under 16 years of age.

She added that authorities have also monitored the Norwegian to be an active Internet user as he always hunts for his would-be victims via e-mail and Facebook.

By Marna Dagumboy Del Rosario (PNA)

ANGELES CITY -- On the eve of Earth Hour 2018, Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan on Friday encouraged all residents of this highly-urbanized city to step up their energy conservation efforts to combat climate change.

Pamintuan is expected to grace SM City Clark’s observance of Earth Hour on Saturday as a resource speaker to call on households and businesses in the city to take a stand against the threat of global warming.

Angeles City on Friday began observing Earth Hour, as government offices, barangay councils, public and private schools, mall and supermarket managements, market associations and hospitals in the city took time to clean up their surroundings from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.

The Earth Hour, which this year carries the theme #Connect2Earth, is a global environmental event organized by the World Wide Fund (WWF) to inspire and empower individuals, organizations and governments to take actions to preserve the environment.

This year’s celebration marks the 10th anniversary of the campaign, which also focuses on protecting biodiversity from climate change.

In this light, Pamintuan also urged all Angeleños to join the annual Global Earth Hour to be held at The Meeting Place, SM City Clark at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday.

“These are small sacrifices that we can contribute to save our planet. This is our way, our collaborative stand to spread awareness about global warming and environment conservation,” he said.

Recently, the Angeles City government, through its key planning team against climate change, participated in a four-day local climate change action planning workshop organized by the United Nations Habitat Philippines.

The capacity building activity aimed at guiding the city government in formulating its own priority action plan to mitigate the effects of climate change.

“These efforts symbolize our solidarity with the world in the campaign to fight the adverse effects of climate change,” he added.

Pampanga ‘must-see’ tours launched

By Astrud Q. Aguinaldo

CLARK FREEPORT -- In an effort to establish Pampanga as a “must-see” destination, a national organization of travel agents recently launched tour packages to promote tourists spots in the province.

Dubbed as “Leguan Ning Pampanga” (Beauty of Pampanga), the National Association of Independent Travel Agencies - Philippines, Inc. (NAITAS) Pampanga Chapter hosted some 100 tourism stakeholders nationwide to a familiarization tour in the province.

NAITAS has 14 chapters nationwide and is composed of 1,000 members.

Citing Clark airport’s expansion, Nancy Dominguez, president of NAITAS Pampanga chapter expressed optimism in promoting the province as a "promising" tourist destination.

It is our responsibility to support these airline companies and by conducting familiarization exchanges between Central Luzon and other regions and the conduct of business to business meetings, our stakeholders are able to sell their destinations,” she said.

MPTC implements extensive motorist assistance program

By Reynaldo G. Navales

ANGELES CITY -- Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) President and Chief Executive Officer Rodrigo Franco said the firm is set to implement an extensive motorist assistance program starting this Holy Week.

The program is aimed at ensuring a safe and convenient travel for motorists at the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), and Cavite Expressay (CAVITEX).

In line with this, the MPTC is expanding this year the coverage of its annual “Safe Trip Mo Sagot Ko” (SMSK) program at NLEX, SCTEX and CAVITEX.

The expanded SMSK will cover not only Holy Week, All Saints Day, and Christmas holidays but also the forthcoming long weekends specifically Araw ng Kagitingan (April 7 to9), National Heroes’ Day (August 25 to 27) and Bonifacio Day (November 30 to December 2).

The SMSK is MPTC’s annual assistance program intended to ensure hassle-free travel during holidays by enhancing all services in all three MPTC-owned expressways.

Apart from expanding the coverage to the long weekends, the SMSK will also render 24-hour free towing services for Class 1 vehicles during the specific periods instead of the usual 12-hour operation.

“We are implementing a more extensive SMSK starting this Holy Week to further improve our services for safe and convenient travel to our motorists traveling between Metro Manila and Central and North Luzon provinces,” said Franco.

From March 23 to April 2, NLEX-SCTEX traffic personnel will devote extended working hours and intensified patrol coverage to closely monitor and manage the expected surge of vehicles in Balintawak, Mindanao Avenue, Bocaue, Sta. Ines, Tarlac and Subic - Tipo toll plazas. Additional patrol and incident response teams will also be ready to assist motorists at all interchanges and fuel stations.

On the peak hours of March 28, 29, and April 1, the Balintawak Toll Plaza will open 24 toll collection points while Mindanao Avenue and Tarlac toll plazas will open 10 and 29 toll collection points, respectively. Portabooths and portable toll collection equipment will be used to speed up transactions.

By April 1, the Bocaue Toll Plaza will have a maximum of 62 toll collection points in operation for motorists going back to Metro Manila.

During the same period, CAVITEX will deploy more traffic patrol officers and security personnel to manage the traffic and assist motorists. Ambulant tellers will be on standby to facilitate faster toll transactions.

On March 28 to April 1, MPTC and its partners will set up SMSK Motorist Camps and provide free services such as free calls and Wi-Fi, free drinking water, free basic mechanic services and first aid treatments in designated locations along NLEX, SCTEX, and CAVITEX.

Free towing services to the nearest exit will be offered to Class 1 from 6:00 a.m. of March 28 to 12:00 a.m. of April 1.

Isay, Robert & MSO in HAU’s 85th anniversary

By Amadís Ma. Guerrero (The Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines — The Holy Angel University (HAU) in Angeles City, Pampanga is described as the biggest Catholic school in the country. And for its 85th anniversary, school authorities opted for a special concert featuring Isay Alvarez and Robert Seña, who are equally at home in musical theater, straight drama and even indie films and TV guesting.

And the husband-and-wife team was to be accompanied by the Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO), no less, the oldest symphony orchestra in Asia (give or take some years of forced inactivity), led by conductor Arturo Molina. The concert was titled Return to Broadway.

But first a bow to Kapampangan culture, in keeping with the slogan “To be a better Filipino you must be a good Kapampangan.”

In his welcome remarks, HAU president Luis Ma. Calingo noted that, “The first non-Spanish zarzuela in the Philippines was staged in Pampanga in 1901.” And so the prestigious Holy Angel University Chorale and the newly named Holy Angel Symphonic Orchestra performed a number from Alang Diyos, a Pampango zarzuela by Juan Crisostomo Soto.

Then maestro Molina cut loose with a lively Broadway medley which was well-received by the audience and keyed up with expectation. Isay and Robert rendered medleys and solo numbers.

There were numbers from the Phantom of the Opera, Cats, My Fair Lady, Starlight Express, Miss Saigon and the less familiar Hercules. But the two songs from the latter, Go the Distance and I Believe were significant.

Isay was in top form. Her voice sounded never better when last heard a few years ago in the stage musical Katy! although she did not reach the high notes in the coda to “I could have danced all night,” the way the young Julie Andrews did during the ‘60s. Robert’s singing voice also sounded great, although with a slight tremolo at times.

It was a real treat listening live again to all those familiar and beloved arias, duets and numbers sang as well as played instrumentally. Robert brought the house down with a show-stopping rendition of This Is the Moment from Jekyll and Hyde. And, in another encore, Isay and Robert ended the show with the touching Wonderful World, popularized by Louis Armstrong.

It was a highly successful concert, marred only by a stubbornly uncooperative mic which had to be replaced.

DOT-3 launches CL tourism exchange

By Ashley Manabat

CLARK FREEPORT – In an effort to continue the marketing and promotional efforts on the different destinations in the region, the Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 3 has launched the Central Luzon Tourism Exchange (CLTE) program.

In this regard, DOT officers and stakeholders such as travel agents and hotel representatives from Pampanga, Bataan, Bulacan, Tarlac, Iloilo, Aklan and especially in this freeport gathered on Tuesday at the Midori Hotel and Casino here and presented the various tourism destinations in the region.

DOT-3 acting regional director Caroline Uy delivered the keynote address stressing the importance of knowing the legitimate tourism stakeholders to lessen or stop fake suppliers, travel agents and others.

“This event is beneficial to all stakeholders, a venue to promote the tourism industry in the region and support the flights in Clark airport. Although we have online directory and information, B2B is as important because it’s a personal approach in promoting company products and services as well as justify the legitimacy and credibility of the suppliers,” she said.

“Due to the success of last year’s Tourism Exchange with Cebu and Davao, we are now continuing our marketing and promotional efforts on the different destinations in the country,” she added.

Mabalacat City Councilor Krizzanel “Win-win” Garbo, in her speech, underscored the importance of the event “because it will promote various tourism destinations…”

Garbo said Mabalacat City is now promoting Haduan Falls as well as the Kamikaze Shrine as among the places where tourists can visit.

Audio-video presentations

Philippines AirAsia showed an audio-visual presentation during the event as well as Christina Enriquez, Bataan provincial tourism officer, where tourism trends in historical, cultural, product, people, sports and educational values in the province were highlighted.

Clark attractions

The biggest water theme park in Southeast Asia was also presented as part of the tourism destinations in the freeport.

Aqua Planet, a P2.5-billion project situated on a 10-hectare property in the northwest section of this freeport, was formally opened to the public on February 24.

It has 25 state-of-the-art water attraction facilities that are suited for both children and adults.

The New Clark City (NCC) was also presented by Josephine Poyaoan, Clark Development Corp. (CDC) tourism officer.

B2B

The highlight of the event was the “Business to Business (B2B)” discussions of Central Luzon/Clark - Iloilo/ Aklan stakeholders.

According to Chriselle S. Yambao, DOT 3 supervising tourism operations officer, this is the fi rst B2B event organized by DOT 3 in 2018.

“We are hoping to create more tourism exchange events in the future. The last time we were in Iloilo, the DOT Western Visayas and their stakeholders hosted a very successful B2B and familiarization tour,” she said.

“Now we are trying to give back the same hospitality and showcase what we have here in Central Luzon,” she added.

The CLTE is a program initiated by DOT 3 with the support of the local private tourism stakeholders.

The program consists of familiarization tours in Central Luzon and B2B sessions with tour operators from the different regions.

Clark Airport official backs drive vs illegal wildlife trade

Reynaldo G. Navales

CLARK FREEPORT --- Clark International Airport Corporation acting president Alexander Cauguiran has expressed support for the government’s campaign against the illegal wildlife trade.

Cauguiran said that Clark International Airport supports the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Regional Wildlife Traffic Monitoring Unit (RWTMU) in their campaign to curb the illegal trade of wild plants and animals. “Clark International Airport is touted as Asia’s next premier gateway and while we are working harder to realize that expectation, the DENR and RWTMU have the full support of Clark airport in your efforts on enforcement and policy improvements to eliminate illegal wildlife trade,” Cauguiran said.

The DENR, in cooperation with the RWTMU, organized orientation about the wildlife laws at Azzurro Hotel in Angeles City recently. A memorandum of agreement was also signed by officials of the DENR, CIAC, and RWTMU.

Cauguiran lauded the collaboration between the DENR, CIAC, RWTMU and other concerned agencies.

He said that Clark airport has established a mechanism called Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) to ensure that laws on taxable goods, human trafficking, and regulations on flora and fauna are enforced.

The expansion in the operations of Clark airport entails stringent measures to ensure that laws on environmental management are observed, according to Cauguiran.

“Now we are about to add another mechanism to the existing CIQ. Thanks to the efforts of DENR for considering Clark airport as one of your partners to institute a wildlife traffic monitoring system,” Cauguiran said.

He also said that airport personnel who attended the orientation will learn a lot about relevant wildlife policies and the standard monitoring and documentation protocols including the processing of wildlife-related cases.

(PR)

ANGELES CITY -- “Nothing compares to the fulfilment of finishing a book. We may be in the digital era but the experience of exploring the world through your fingertips is still priceless.”

Thus said Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan as he addressed the guests and students from various schools during the opening ceremonies of the 59th Public Library Day held Friday at the Angeles City Library and Information Center (ACLIC).

The theme for this year, “Limang K para maging OK sa aKlatan: Kultura, Kalusugan, Kabuhayan, Karunungan, Kalikasan,” highlights the expanded roles of public libraries as active partners in different aspects of students values formation and nation building.

During his speech, Vice Mayor Bryan Matthew Nepomuceno said he sees the need to modernize the city library to further meet its goals especially now that the youth are more inclined to the digital way of research and reading.

“While it is true that the internet has provided incredible benefits and advantages to the people of today, we cannot deny the fact that books are more scholastic and comprehensive. For our part, we have to go with the times, we have to recreate our city library,” said Nepomuceno.

The day-long celebration included a sundry of educational activities which aimed to reimagine libraries as hub for recreation, creativity, intellectual discourse, heritage and cultural awareness.

Lined up activities included storytelling, heritage parul making, chess competition, film showing, and a talk facilitated by Mike Pangilinan entitled “Alaya ampong Singsing”.

Meanwhile, City Librarian Mila Narsing expressed her gratitude to the mayor and the City Council for passing a resolution declaring March 9 of every year as an annual observance of the Public Library Day.

Another resolution was also handed over to Narsing which states the establishment of the City Library Board in accordance with Republic Act 7743. The board will act as the advisory and policy-setting authority to provide stability and continuity of the city library with Mayor Pamintuan as the chairman.

Developments for the City Library

Various facility, services, and physical structure developments are in the pipeline for the improvement of the City Library.

During the celebration’s opening program, Pamintuan and Nepomuceno disclosed that the local government is serving a major facelift for the decades-old public library.

According to Nepomuceno, the third floor of the city library will be converted into an amphitheatre which will be conducive for different cultural and socio-civic activities.

An elevator will also be installed in the building to make other facilities accessible to senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The façade of the city library will also be renovated with a design that will complement the heritage vibe of the vicinity.

Additional features are also to be added in the library like the city’s very own Kapampangan Cultural Center and Leisure Reading Center for children, out-of-school youth, and senior citizens.

The P30-million improvement project will be implemented as soon as the project is awarded to the winning bidder.

As a manifestation of public and private partnership, the Widus Foundation will sponsor the rehabilitation of the city library’s “Internet ng Bayan” as part of their corporate social responsibility.

The city librarian said that when all the developments are in place, the city library will extend its operating hours until weekends to give the students the access and ample time for research and other scholastic activities.

“Our city library is a compendium of knowledge and a repository of history. We hope that when the renovation is done, we can engage and attract more people, especially the students, to take advantage of our rich learning resources at the city library,” said Pamintuan.

Green group eyes long-term solution to water shortage

By Reynaldo G. Navales

ANGELES CITY -- Environmentalists have vowed to pursue long-term solution to the water shortage being experienced by several villages here.

Renato Tayag Jr., executive director of Sibul Foundation, has identified the first method to protect the Sapang Bato Water Shed Area.

The House of Representatives, through House Bill 6201, declared the Sapang Bato Water Shed as a protected area and eco-park, according to Tayag.

Some 400 hectares of land were allotted for reforestation in order to protect the area under the Sapangbato Watershed Protection Act of 2017, he said.

Sapang Bato is a mountainous village at the upstream portion of Angeles City to the East that is adjacent to Clark Freeport and Porac town. It is a natural watershed that has the potential to produce water for the entire Metro Clark area and its environs in the next 50 years.

A study conducted by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the BPI Foundation stated that Angeles City's population increased by 38 percent in the past 20 years.

The city's population density has also grown from 3,807 per square kilometer to 5,249 per square kilometer.

The local business grew by 42 percent from 2005 to 2012 while the housing industry escalated from 54,059 in 2000 to 72,791 in 2010.

The increase in the number of commercial and industrial activities resulted in more number of people are using energy and water.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica), in its study conducted in 2010, stated that nine major cities in the Philippines, including Angeles City, were listed as "water-critical areas."

Former city councilor Louie Reyes, head of the Green Youth Brigade, for his part, said that another long-term solution to the water crisis is the erection of ram pumps.

The natural water system will ensure the sustainability of water supply, according to Reyes.

Reyes said he has tapped a firm to conduct a survey and study that will determine if ram pumps will work in Sapang Bato.

All ram pumps works in the principle of momentum, which is controlled by a cycle set up by the interaction of two valves -- an impetus valve and a flapper valve -- in the pump.

Chinese groups to pour billions in investments

(PR)

CLARK FREEPORT -- Groups of Chinese investors are bent on investing billions for the possible expansion of their respective businesses in Pampanga.

This was gleaned during their recent meeting here with Governor Lilia Pineda, Vice Governor Dennis Pineda, Pampanga Councilors' League president Olga Frances David-Dizon, San Simon Mayor Leonora Wong, former San Simon mayor Rodrigo Canlas, and National Telecommunications Commission Regional Director Azor Sitchon.

The two Chinese groups -- Jing Jiang and Yatay -- underscored their respective plans to put up more investments that would generate thousands of jobs for Kapampangans and other locals from nearby provinces.

According to Canlas, the Chinese businessmen want to put in billions worth of investments in the province, particularly in the towns of San Simon and Mexico.

He said a Chinese businessman from the Chinese Chamber Global Group had begun its business venture in the past by acquiring 17 hectares in San Simon.

He added that the other Chinese investors believe that San Simon town has the potential, as it is strategically located beside the stretch and exit of North-Luzon Expressway (NLEx).

The former mayor also revealed that Jing Jiang Group and local partners also bought 40 hectares of land in San Simon but they still want to develop more up to 1,000 hectares. They then asked Mexico Mayor Teddy Tumang for the possible expansion up to their town.

"I was the one who contacted Mayor Tumang to tell him that the Chinese investors want to expand in Mexico and their willingness to purchase hectares of land. That's why I arranged a meeting with the mayor in Manila to meet the Chinese businessmen. That's why they came up with an agreement," Canlas said.

He said the Chinese investors wanted to personally meet the governor to present their business plans.

"Nakita naman siguro nila na cooperative sina governor at vice-governor kaya lalong lalakas ang loob nila dahil nakilala na nila ang mga Pampanga officials (They saw that the governor and vice-governor are very cooperative and are now more than willing to invest after they met Pampanga officials)," Canlas said.

Village chief: Protect tourists

By Reynaldo G. Navales

ANGELES CITY -- A village chief has underscored the need to protect tourists, particularly the foreigners who are visiting the entertainment capital city of Central Luzon.

Balibago chairman Rodelio Mamac said the image of the whole country will be affected if foreign tourists experience unfortunate incidents, including robbery and other crimes.

Last Saturday, a Qatar national, identified only as Said, was allegedly victimized by three women who allegedly carted away the tourist's P50,000.

Mamac said Said, who arrived in Angeles City more than a week ago, invited to his hotel room two of the three suspects, whom he did not name.

Said told the barangay leaders his guests were no longer in the room. He later discovered that his P50,000 cash were also missing, according to Mamac.

"Reminder to all, tourists come because they like and love our country. If we do harm or bad against them, it is our country that will be affected. We will also lose others who wants to visit us," Mamac said.

"Last night, a tourist from Qatar reported a robbery incident perpetrated by three women conniving each other by robbing him. According to him, P50,000 was taken by the suspects," he added.

After learning about the incident, Mamac said he immediately directed his men to conduct a hot pursuit operation against the suspects.

"After it was reported, we exerted our efforts to arrest the suspects with the description of the victim. After an hour, we were able to arrest the suspects and the recover the money. All were returned to the tourist victim," the barangay chairman said.

Mamac said he established a tourist assistance center few years ago to protect the foreigners visiting the city's entertainment center.

"This is the reasons why I established the Barangay Tourist Assistance Office when I assumed as the barangay chairman of Balibago," Mamac said.

Said already returned to Qatar on Sunday, March 4. He did not file any case against the suspects.

He thanked Mamac and the other barangay leaders for the swift action and the recovery of his money.

MACCII offers solutions to water shortage in Angeles villages

By Reynaldo G. Navales

ANGELES CITY -- The Metro Angeles Chamber of Commerce and Industry Incorporated (MACCII) has offered long-term solutions to the water shortage problem in two villages here.

Water conservation, preservation of watershed areas, and the use of technology like the ram pump were among the solutions raised during the business chamber’s meeting with environmentalists and residents of the two affected villages – Sapangbato and Margot.

Former councilor Louie T. Reyes, head of the Green Youth Brigade, said the City Council declared the two barangays under state of calamity following the water crisis which affected more than 20,000 residents.

About seven trucks are supplying residents in the two villages, according to Reyes.

“Although there is still water coming out of the faucet, the water pressure is so weak,” he said.

MACCII members learned that the villagers suffer because of the water shortage, Reyes said.

“There is really disruption in their daily routines. ‘E baling kawalan kang kuryenti, ‘e mu sana danum (It’s okay to have no electricity but not water),” he added.

The Angeles City Water District (ACWD) is currently constructing a pumping station in Barangay Sapangbato for the two villages but this will take about four months, according to Reyes.

“Four months is too long for 20,000 people needing immediately safe and clean water,” he said.

The MACCII members, led by their president Arni Valdez, also suggested short-term solutions like the donation of mineral water to the villages, Reyes said.
