Zamboanga City - Archived News

Wars of ancient history were about possessions, territory, power, control, family, betrayal, lover's quarrel, politics and sometimes religion.

But we are in the Modern era and supposedly more educated and enlightened .

Think about this. Don't just brush off these questions.

  • Why is RELIGION still involved in WARS? Isn't religion supposed to be about PEACE?
  • Ask yourself; What religion always campaign to have its religious laws be accepted as government laws, always involved in wars and consistently causing WARS, yet insists that it's a religion of peace?

WHY??

There are only two kinds of people who teach tolerance:
  1. The Bullies. They want you to tolerate them so they can continue to maliciously deprive you. Do not believe these bullies teaching tolerance, saying that it’s the path to prevent hatred and prejudice.
  2. The victims who are waiting for the right moment to retaliate. They can’t win yet, so they tolerate.

PH envoy to Indonesia eyes Zambo-Manado ties

By Vic Larato (PR)

The Philippine Ambassador to Indonesia Leehiong T. Wee unveiled yesterday his plans that would link up Zamboanga City to Manado, the second largest city in northern Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Ambassador Wee, who hails from this city, was honored by the city government headed by Mayor Beng Climaco during the flag raising ceremony yesterday morning at City Hall grounds for his contribution to the development of Zamboanga.

Considering the fragile peace and order situation in this part of the region, Wee said he would propose an anti-terrorism linkage through trainings between Zamboanga City and Manado.

Another plan is to open up a sisterhood agreement between Zamboanga and Manado, citing the commonalities of both cities in terms of tourism, education, health and various other aspects.

“There are many things we can promote to Indonesia and in return we can bring in Indonesian investors,” Amb. Wee said in a tete-a-tete with City Administrator Apple Go, Rotarians and city officials at the City Mayor’s Office.

Another important linkage Zamboanga can establish with Indonesia, according to Ambassador Wee, is the air link by opening up a direct flight for Zamboanga-Manado and vise-versa.

The ambassador said the air linkage would increase investment and tourism income for the city. He would request the Philippine Air Lines (PAL) to open the Zambo-Manado flight.

To make things happen, Ambassador Wee said the city must send a trade mission to Manado, Indonesia to further explore the areas of cooperation and exchanges between the two cities.

The trade mission is now being organized among local business and civic groups, hoping to launch the mission early next year.

By Nonoy Lacson

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Cardiologists from the Philippine Heart Association, Inc. (PHA) National and Zamboanga chapters joined forces and conducted recently in this city a free hands-only Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training for non-medical personnel.

According to the PHA official Gynna Gagelonia, the free CPR on Wheels & Wings (CWW)-Zamboanga will be ushered in by the ABCDE Screenings for doctors and launching of the Sneakers.

The free CPR training was conducted at the Western Mindanao State University, Friday, dubbed “CPR on Wheels & Wings (CWW) Zamboanga”.

CPR is an emergency procedure that combines chest compressions often with artificial ventilation in an effort to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest.

Gagelonia said Zamboanga City was the 23rd CWW destination. The program, itself, has been able to train 110,000 people nationwide.

Two years ago, the PHA took on the challenge of initiating the CPR-Ready PH 21 Campaign to put the Philippines on the international map of CPR-ready countries. CWW is the vehicle of the Campaign, according to Gagelonia.

The CPR training was conducted by cardiologists from Manila and Zamboanga. Taking the lead was Dr. Kristine Bantala- Supnet, president of PHA Zamboanga Chapter.

Zamboanga City heightens anti-drug campaign support

By Bong Garcia (SunStar Philippines)

THE city government has pledged to further intensify its support and assistance to agencies enforcing anti-drug operations and programs with the ultimate goal of clearing Zamboanga City of drug abuse.

Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar said the city government provides free drug testing kits and incentives to tipsters and operatives apart from providing equipment.

Salazar said the city government is also collaborating with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), police and other law enforcement agencies in the conduct of information drives in the villages to drum up awareness on drug prevention and control.

The mayor also intends to come up with a general assembly of all villages where issues about drug clearing operations and other issues related to the anti-drug war will be discussed.

Salazar said she will also reiterate her request to the national government to provide the PDEA with marked money, which is very vital in anti-drug operations.

The mayor vowed to bring the matter anew during the Peace and Order Council-Mindanao Cluster meeting slated to take place sometime this month.

“We will do more activities to help our city and clear it of drug abuse,” Salazar emphasized.

“We are all out in our support to President (Rodrigo) Duterte’s anti-drug war,” she added.

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Some 34 young individuals are set to serve as city government officials for one week in line with the program of the Rotary Club to mold the youth as future leaders.

Dr. Justin Paber, Rotary Club of Zamboanga president, said Thursday they will serve as city government officials from Nov. 12 to 17 in line with the observance of Rotary Youth Week.

Zambo qualifies for ADB’s ‘Livable Cities’ project

By Sheila Covarrubias

Representatives from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) conducted a scoping mission in Zamboanga City, one of the candidates for the Livable Cities Investment Project, a program that addresses infrastructure deficits and focuses on local economic growth and development in Mindanao.

The ADB officials met with Mayor Beng Climaco, City Administrator Apple Go and City Planning and Development Coordinator Engr. Rodrigo Sicat to discuss issues related to waste water, solid waste and drainage needs in the city.

Mayor Climaco welcomes the project saying it will be very timely and auspicious, as the City Government is moving forward through aggressive implementation of its Security, health and education program.

The Livable Cities Program, which will start 2020, aims to cover 1 to 2 cities in the Philippines comprising main trade hub cities in the Mindanao region and/ or tourism hub cities in the Visayas region. Its components include wastewater treatment and management, drainage and solid waste management in each of the project cities.

ADB representatives who were in the city recently were Sorin Chung - Financial Management Specialist, Alain Morel - Senior Country Specialist and Sameer Kamal - Urban Development Specialist.

The project is in line with ADB’s vision “to transform the archetypical chaotic, polluted, inequitable city of Asia into a competitive, equitable and environmentally sustainable urban region – in short, a livable city”.

According to the ADB program rationale, the proposed cities will be selected based on analysis of the needs in urban services of highly urbanized cities in the Mindanao and Visayas regions and discussions with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and local governments.

Under the said program, the ADB will provide a long-term support (10-20 years) to the proposed cities. “Where possible, the project will build on initiatives under other programs, such as the USAID program “Strengthening Urban Resilience for Growth with Equity (SURGE) as well as master planning and feasibility studies financed by JICA.”

The project, according to the ADB rationale, will also coordinate with the ongoing National Sewerage and Septage Management program.

ZAMBOANGA CITY--First district Representative Celso Lobregat on Monday led the turnover of a newly-completed PHP11.4-million school building project on a west coast barangay in this city.

The recipient of the two-storey six-classroom school building is the Talisayan National High School (TNHS) located in Barangay Talisayan, west of this city.

PCG helps NFA distribute rice in Zambo island villages

By Teofilo Garcia, Jr (PNA)

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has provided transport and security assistance to the National Food Authority (NFA) in the distribution of NFA rice in the islands’ barangays here.

This, as the NFA initiated the distribution of rice to provide cheap staple food to the residents in this city’s eight island barangays.

Lt. Commander Noriel Ramos, Zamboanga Coast Guard Station commander, on Wednesday said the assistance they render to fellow government agencies, such as NFA, is part of their mandate to bring government services closer to the people.

Ramos noted that most islanders cannot afford to travel to the mainland to buy basic goods, such as rice.

He noted the fare for a small boat ride to an island here, like Sta. Cruz Island, is PHP100 per passenger. One-way travel to Sta. Cruz Island is around 15 to 20 minutes. Fare rates to the other islands farther from the mainland are higher.

“We are closely coordinating with NFA and are always ready to assist them in this endeavor because we also wanted to help those island barangays to obtain ample supply of rice. We appreciate this initiative of the grains agency in serving the people,” he said.

He also advised the public to report to concerned authorities if they notice the presence of people acting suspiciously.

He said the deployment of Coast Guard personnel on beaches is part of the security measures they adopted in line with the observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.

The ZCGS has deployed personnel backed by K9 units at the local port to ensure the safe travel from and to nearby provinces to visit their departed loved ones during “Undas”.

Meanwhile, the ZCGS personnel also continued the conduct of Safety Security and Environment Numbering (SSEN) system on motorboats with three gross tons and below.

DOST-Zamboanga conferred with quality management award

By Bong Garcia (SunStar Philippines)

THE Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Zamboanga Peninsula was recently conferred the Philippine Quality Award (PQA)-Recognition for Proficiency in Quality Management (Level 2) by President Rodrigo Duterte.

The President’s conferment makes the DOST-Zamboanga Peninsula as the country’s lone national line agency to have been conferred with such kind of award.

DOST regional director Martin Wee said they received the prestigious award after comprehensive efforts in improving and maintaining its services to the public since receiving the Recognition for Commitment to Quality Management (Level 1) in 2012.

Wee said it was during the stint of then regional director and now DOST Undersecretary Brenda Nazareth-Manzano that the coverage of the assessment period was conducted.

He said the Recognition for Proficiency in Quality Management is awarded to organizations that demonstrated a thorough implementation of quality and productivity management principles and have significant progress in building sound and notable processes.

A solid approach to system-level quality and productivity management adds up to the extensive lines of criteria to aspire the said award, Wee added.

This year’s Philippine Quality Award Ceremony is intended specifically for 16 agencies and organizations across the country who successfully bagged the award for the 18th to 20th Cycles of PQA (2015-2017).

The PQA Criteria focus on the areas of Leadership, Strategy, Customer, Measurement, Analysis and Knowledge Management, Workforce, Operations and Results.

Wee said the PQA is the highest level of national recognition for exemplary organizational performance.

He said it is a global competitiveness template that aims to encourage and engage public and private organizations and other stakeholders to strive for and attain performance excellence.

He added that it is a national award program that recognizes achievements of public and private sector organizations in their journey towards performance excellence.

It is an award comparable with the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award of the US and those in Europe and Asia.

The awarding ceremony was held last week (October 24) during the PQA Conferment Ceremony at the Heroes Hall in Malacañan Palace.
