Dietary supplement is a product that contains vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids, enzymes, and/or other ingredients intended to supplement the diet. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has special labeling requirements for dietary supplements and treats them as foods, not drugs.

Manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplements and dietary ingredients are prohibited from marketing products that are adulterated or misbranded. That means that these firms are responsible for evaluating the safety and labeling of their products before marketing to ensure that they meet all the requirements of DSHEA and FDA regulations.

Wars of ancient history were about possessions, territory, power, control, family, betrayal, lover's quarrel, politics and sometimes religion.

But we are in the Modern era and supposedly more educated and enlightened .

Think about this. Don't just brush off these questions.

  • Why is RELIGION still involved in WARS? Isn't religion supposed to be about PEACE?
  • Ask yourself; What religion always campaign to have its religious laws be accepted as government laws, always involved in wars and consistently causing WARS, yet insists that it's a religion of peace?

WHY??

There are only two kinds of people who teach tolerance:
  1. The Bullies. They want you to tolerate them so they can continue to maliciously deprive you. Do not believe these bullies teaching tolerance, saying that it’s the path to prevent hatred and prejudice.
  2. The victims who are waiting for the right moment to retaliate. They can’t win yet, so they tolerate.

Muslim Youth Council to launch relief ops

By Abigail Viguella

THE Muslim Youth Council (MYC) of Cagayan de Oro is reaching out their helping hand to the internally displaced people (IDPs) of Marawi through a series of relief operations in IDP concentration areas here in the city for the coming Saturdays of July.

Aliyah Lyka Yamot, the head of the MYC committee for this project said that their group plans to go directly to the IDPs in their temporary living spaces here in the city to hand out relief goods composed of food, water, blankets, and other necessities for the IDPs.

"We have just started planning how we will reach these IDPs but we would really like to go where they are in the city. So far our donors have been able to give us enough to help these people here," Yamot said.

The Muslim Youth Council is a union of about 13 Muslim groups here in Cagayan de Oro City which are mostly Muslim youth in the academe. In the commencement of the celebration of the Eid'l Fitr last Sunday, June 25, the group announced their intention to help the Marawi IDPs here in the city.

Yamot said that most of the relief goods that were donated to the group came from the offerings to the city's various Masjids. Others come from anonymous donors who come from different parts of the country.

"It is part of our religion, especially in these times that we have to give out help to our brothers and sisters. And whenever we help others, we do not really have to shout it out so that everybody would know. it is only Allah who can judge and grant us for our actions," she explained.

Yamot said that the group is open and in great need of more donations from interested donors. However, as their council does not have an official office, people can drop their donations to the Masjids in the city.

The groups will accept donations for as long as the situation in Marawi city hinders the IDPs to go home.

NorMin underscores seafarers role in economic dev’t

By Recthie T. Paculba (RTP/PIA10)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA) – To increase awareness among the general public of the indispensable services the seafarers rendered to international seaport trade, the world economy and the society at large, the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA)-10 along with the Philippine Ports Authority-Port Management Office (PPA-PMO)-10 and Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)-10 leads the Day of the Seafarer celebration with the theme, “Seafarers Matter,” on June 25 at PPA Passenger Terminal.

To recognize the seafarers and their efforts in helping the economy, MARINA-10 Regional Director Felisa Orongan said that it is the obligation of the government as well as the private shipping companies to let everybody know that seafarers matter. Hence, every 25th day of June, MARINA along with the other national line agencies set lineup of activities to make the day special.

Orongan also shared that this international celebration should be regularly observed in the country noting that the Philippines is named as the number one supplier of seafarers in the world.

For his part, Coast Guard District Commander Capt Leovigildo Panopio said that the seafarers remarkably mobilize the world economy as they play a great role in transporting about 90 percent of food, gasoline and other products of various industries.

“Halos lahat ng bagay inililipat sa pamamagitan ang sasakyang pandagat at isinasakripisyo ng mga marino ang kanilang buhay (Almost all of the products are transported through sea vessels and the seafarers sacrifice their lives for it),” Panopio said.

He also shared that by protecting the goods and ensuring their delivery, seafarers suffer from being away from their families; missing out on most important occasions of the family just to do their responsibilities at work.

PPA-PMO 10 Manager Engr Isidro Butaslac affirms such deeds of seafarers and stressed that the celebration is “meant to send a clear message to seafarers that we recognize and appreciate their services that we understand the extraordinary conditions and circumstances of their profession and that we do care about them.”

To foster the welfare of the seafarers, Butaslac said that at the regulatory level, they will work hard to create a better, safer and more secure workplace on which the seafarers operate.

“Seafarers are the people without whom food, clothes, gifts, gadgets or even basic needs would not reach our doors. We rely on them yet have we ever said thank you to our seafarers,” Butaslac expressed.

The Day of the Seafarer was highlighted with the blowing of horns, floral offering at the port side, Eucharistic celebration, short program, Larong Pinoy (Filipino games) and a boodle fight. Around 200 participants from national line agencies, private shipping companies, and maritime training institutes and centers graced the event.

MisOr extends livelihood aid to cacao farmers

(CD/PNA)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, June 28 (PNA) -- The provincial government of Misamis Oriental is extending assistance to cacao farmers in a bid to develop the cacao farming industry in the province, provincial governor Yevgeny Vincente Emano said Wednesday.

Emano said the assistance is part of the province's livelihood assistance program for farmers.

The governor said he made the announcement as the provincial government through the provincial agriculture office is set to sign a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Kennemer Foods International (KFI), Inc.

The KFI, Inc. is a Philippine agribusiness company that specializes in sustainable growing, sourcing and trading of high quality agricultural crops such as fermented cacao beans sourced from smallholder farmers.

Emano said the province has identified some selected farmers in the municipal towns of Opol and Alubijid as the initial beneficiaries of the cacao livelihood assistance.

He said the KFI through the provincial agricultural office would provide high quality planting materials at pre-agreed price or at a reasonable price.

The KFI would also extend technical assistance for the growing of cacao, an intensive cacao doctoral training, and purchases all the cacao beans produced by the farmers, Emano said.

He said that a KFI authorized cacao consolidator would subject the cacao beans to a stricter product quality standard and buy the beans under the current market price.

According to Emano, the provincial government would retain five percent of the sales of the cacao products from cacao growers starting from the fourth year from planting until the 50 percent repayment of any cash assistance is met.

Police intensify security in NorMin

By Mark Francisco (PNA)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, June 26 -- The new police regional director, Chief Supt. Timoteo Pacleb, of Northern Mindanao, on Monday ordered to intensify security measures in all checkpoints in the region, both static and mobile.

Pacleb, who randomly inspected a few checkpoints in Cagayan de Oro City and Misamis Oriental Friday afternoon, discovered that some of these were lax than others.

“It must be uniformed and standardized, especially the entry points in the city. There must only be one system that is applied to all entry checkpoints,” he said.

Pacleb ordered that all public passengers must alight from their vehicles, walk in a single line and have themselves and their hand-carried luggage be frisked before returning to the public utility vehicles (buses, jeepneys, vans, etc.). The PUVs themselves must be checked separately.

Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) spokesperson Chief Insp. Mardy Hortillosa said that under the new directive, a checkpoint must be manned by at least eight personnel.

With the Cocpo manpower already stretched, they were given a boost over the weekend by reinforcements from the Malaybalay City-based 403rd Brigade, which sent a battalion-size force who will help man checkpoints, rove around the city and be on call when the need arises.

In a related development, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) 10 has also installed a Haz Mat checkpoint along the national highway at barangay Tablon, Cagayan de Oro City.

All tankers and similar vehicles containing chemicals must be flagged down and inspected by BFP personnel coming from the east and south portion going towards Cagayan de Oro.

A similar checkpoint was earlier set up in Iligan City and west of Misamis Oriental. A week after the Marawi City conflict broke out, the Haz Mat checkpoint in Iligan was able to intercept tons of chemicals believed bomb components.

DICT simplifies gov’t processes, services thru GovCloud

(RTP/PIA10)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA) – In pursuant to Executive No. 47 or the implementation of the iGovPhil Project, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT)-10 introduces the Government Cloud (GovCloud) on June 19, in Cagayan de Oro City to make the government more efficient, transparent and accountable.

“With the GovCLoud, government agencies are able to share resources—which can be allocated when needed as needed—through a high-speed network connection. This reduces hardware acquisition and maintenance costs for the government, essentially creating an “economies of scale” for computing,” DICT Acting Director Evamay C . Dela Rosa said.

As for the operating systems supported by GovCloud, Dela Rosa said that it supports all types of 32-bit and 64-bit OS whether Windows or Linux.

Moreover, the internet connectivity will be provided along with the Fiber-to-the-Building (FTTB) deployment to agencies.

GovCloud offers a secure private cloud infrastructure and guaranteed service level that align with customer requirements. Such enables government agencies to use secure online applications for various computing requirements.

Aside from security, GovCloud also allows easy upscaling or downscaling of ICT resources as and when required, to accommodate increased or changing demand or capacity.

The virtualization also enables the provision of cloud resources whenever and wherever, making access to resources faster and more convenient. This on-demand access to a shared pool of storage and compute resources can also be quickly and easily configured, provisioned and managed even without third party review or approval.

To get started with the GovCloud, government agencies will just have to send an e-mail of intent at govcloudsupport@i.gov.ph.

Screening on for products for Go Lokal stores

By Pamela Jay F. Orias

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Northern Mindanao is holding a two-day screening, assessment, and triage sessions of local products to prepare the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to go mainstream and display their products in Go Lokal stores nationwide.

The screening sessions started on Wednesday, June 21, at the Mallberry Suites along Osmeña Street, Cagayan de Oro City and will end Thursday, June 22.

Leon Flores III, program manager of DTI's One Town, One Product (Otop) said they are mapping the new generation of MSMEs, evaluate them, and provide assistance for them to be able to compete with national and international products.

"Para mag level up sila sa quality, design, prolonging the shelf-life, improving the taste, packaging, labeling, one of the biggest challenges labaw na ang packaging because we really have good products here but they don't invest in good design and packaging so natatalo tayo ng ibang products sa ibang bansa, so gansi ta," Flores said.

The Otop is a priority program of the government to promote entrepreneurship and create jobs, supports MSMEs to manufacture, offer, and market distinctive products or services through the use of indigenous raw materials and local skills and talents.

"We will study where and what the true challenges are, this data comes from experts, designers, for the businessmen here. We need to be able to level up, and the DTI region 10 (Northern Mindanao) will hire consultants, designers, who will help them in their product development for them to be prepared when we make their products mainstream," he said.

Go Lokal is a retail concept store showcasing quality and innovative Philippine products crafted, designed, and produced by the country's MSMEs.

Irwin Jayson Jamaca, said the store is DTI's marketing platform for the country's MSMEs to gain access to the lucrative local consumer market, and ultimately, to the global export market.

"What we did is holding a screening, assessment, and triage (SAT) session, pre-screen all the local products so that when they are already in our stores, they will represent the Northern Mindanao region, so we are here to help them make sure that the region only produces quality products," Jamaca said.

The Go Lokal stores are placed in malls and high-end hotels nationwide, so it is but appropriate to screen them before they will be placed in the limelight, Jamaca added.

Jamaca said the region has promising products that deserve recognition, what lacks, he said, is the product development.

Tita Perla Rubio, owner of the Malaybalay's Choice Craft, said through the DTI-Northern Mindanao's seminars, her team has learned to evolve and adopt the changes particularly in product branding and marketing.

"We started our business in 2004, and since then, I had the opportunity to introduce our product overseas, and they have a very good response," Rubio said.

"So far, we are already known in terms of woven products, but we also want to help those that just started," she said.

The products of Malaybalay's Choice Craft are in already displayed in malls and airports.

DTI leads MSMEs to inclusive economic growth

By Recthie T. Paculba (RTP/PIA10)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, June 21 (PIA)— To inspire the entrepreneurs in the region to level up and meet global standards, and discover emerging suppliers and new product with high market potential, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-10 holds the OTOP (One Town, One Product) Next Generation Screening, Assessment and Triage (SAT) Sessions on June 21-22 at Mallberry Suites Business Hotel, here.

“We need to do more and level up as we go along because we are now competing with the best in the world,” Leon Flores III, OTOP program coordinator said.

He also shared that with the DTI’s program for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), inclusive growth will be advanced simply by driving MSME development, generating jobs and promoting meaningful livelihood.

Aside from providing market access to hundreds of MSMEs, the OTOP NextGen also targets to uplift communities and other vulnerable sectors of society by apportioning part of store sales to community-based projects including drug rehabilitation.

In the region, about 76 clients underwent the SAT sessions handled by four designers. Each designer was assigned in a discussion table and every client had 30 minutes to complete the session.

On the first day of SAT sessions, about 43 clients from Camiguin, Bukidnon and Misamis Occidental had the opportunity to have their products be known globally. The panelists for food products were Luis Jose Manalang and Christopher Gomez, and for the crafts, the panelists include Benjamin Sixto Molina, Jr. Nicole Cabanlet and Patrick Gabutina.

The second day of SAT sessions is composed of 33 MSMEs from Lanao del Norte and Misamis Oriental.

Once selected, the MSMEs’ products will have the chance to be endorsed in Go Lokal stores nationwide.

Go Lokal serves as a marketing platform for MSMEs to gain access to the lucrative local consumer market and ultimately the global export market.

To be selected, products of the MSMEs should have great and modern design, world class packaging, competitive pricing, assured quality, value for money, and consistent supply.

Flores stressed that passing through the SAT sessions and becoming part of Go Lokal will provide great opportunities to MSMEs as they will no longer pay the listing and marketing fees, and they will have free product development assistance and training on retail market. The MSMEs will also experience 365 days exposure to retail markets in prime locations.

NGCP surpasses energy consumption

(CD/PNA)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, June 20 (PNA) – The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) successfully filled up the country’s surplus power consumption this year, the NGCP announced Tuesday.

In a statement, Mae Roselle L. Curiano, the regional communications officer, said that the country’s power consumption in May this year reached 10,054 megawatts, which the NGCP was able to supply.

The NGCP’s total power supply is only 11,444 megawatts, which left the power grid only a 1,390 megawatt “operating margin,” Curiano said.

She said that the operating margin was just enough to allow the flow of the current to continue without interference and avoid “low voltage” at “low frequency,” The consumers did not notice the sudden upsurge of the power consumption because the NGCP has instituted various changes in the substations to empower the operating measures of the transformers, Curiano said.

She said that the power changes actually took place in the substations in San Jose, Dasmariñas, Bolo, and the 500 kilovolts in Tayabas, all NGCP power grids in Luzon.

The NGCP’s Luzon System Operation was able to successfully maintain the normal system voltage level, which is normally applied at the height of the dry season.

The office will be ECCP’s second in Mindanao after Davao City, said Jo-Ann Vidal, Euroepan Chamber overseer for Northern Mindanao.

She said the business group remains undaunted despite the ongoing armed conflict in Marawi City, which is situated roughly 123 kilometers from this city.

“What’s happening in Marawi has never affected our timeline so far. We are continuing preparations to set up office,” Vidal said.

Between now and September, the ECCP secretariat will be touching base with European business interests located in the northern part of the island, Vidal said.

“I still have to inventory how many businesses are located here. We’re still collating,” she added.

Once the office is in place here, ECCP will do business matching and assist the European companies in their export and import needs particularly on document followups.

ECCP will also assist Filipino businesses which will put up branches in Europe, Vidal said.

With nearly 800 members, the ECCP also offers market intelligence briefings and research, access to live business opportunities, updates on the latest business developments and industry trends, assistance in internationalizing or localizing business, marketing and promotions opportunities, networking opportunities and customized training solutions.

Christians, Muslims agree on solidarity prayer for peace

By Pamela Jay F. Orias

INTERFAITH groups in Cagayan de Oro City gathered on Saturday, June 3, to agree on a common prayer, or solidarity prayer for peace, to be recited by both Muslims and Christians alike every day at 6 in the evening.

Monsignor Rey Monsanto, vicar-general of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro said the prayer, is not only a prayer for peace to come, but also a prayer for each individual to be peace makers or channels of peace.

Catholic and Islam faithfuls are urged to recite the prayer which has been translated into English, Cebuano, and Maranao dialect.

"This prayer makes us personally involved in achieving peace, by leading it. We made a prayer that is acceptable to all beliefs, and we wanted to make it short as it only mentions what we immediately need as of this moment," Monsanto said.

He said the prayer can also be used even after martial law is lifted and the Marawi siege ends soon, as achieving peace is "always a challenge every single day."

The text of the prayer is as follows, "Give us O God, the boldness to live in dialogue in the midst of divisions and conflicts and to be peace to all your creation. Amen."

Archbishop Antonio Ledesma, meanwhile, called on the public to remain calm and be vigilant at the same time.

Ledesma also urged Kagay-anons to help the evacuees in these tough times.

"Magpabilin kita sa kalma, ug (Let us keep calm, and) at the same time, we ask them to be vigilant also, all the more we should activate ourselves to help those in need. It is in these times that we show them compassion and love," Ledesma said.

Ledesma added that the interfaith prayer is very symbolic and meaningful to all faith and beliefs.

Mohamad Gondarangin, president of the Oro Muslim Association, appealed to the government to put an end to the airstrikes.

He said the bombs being thrown in the city does not do anything with the terrorists but only destroyed their homes.

It is every Muslim's prayer, he said, that the government would listen and end the airstrikes.

"We have lost so much, we cannot afford to lose more of what is left in our beloved city," he said.

Gondarangin also reminds the soldiers and other law enforcement agencies to prevent abuses while the martial law is in effect.

While he supports the declaration, Gondarangin said he hopes that this martial law would be different than that in 1972 where rebels rose as abuses were also rising.

"We hope the government hastens the Bangsamoro framework because we believe that this could be one of the solutions to the problem we are facing now," he said.

CDO turns-over Linear Park Project in Brgy 22

By Recthie T. Paculba (RTP/PIA10)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA) -- To provide convenient access for heavy equipment to pass through during cleanup activities of Hapsay Sapa, the city government turns over the Linear Park project along Bitan-ag Creek in Barangay 22 to the local government unit on May 31.

Barangay Captain Eldo Casiño said that such project is useful not only in the cleanup activities of the Hapsay Sapa Council since the putting up of road in the area is helpful especially during calamities or disasters such as fire.

Casiño shared that when they had a fire incident years ago in the area, the fire trucks had difficulty getting inside the area to put the fire down. Hence, they are very thankful that the city government included the project in UN Habitat’s environment protection and climate change program as this would surely be of big help in saving lives during emergency.

The city government, on the other hand, expressed that the project is one of the ways to address the drainage problem of the city and the bigger challenge now is to expand the project all throughout the creek up to Limketkai Mall.

As for the smooth implementation of the project, the participation of the people in the community is commended by Mayor Oscar Moreno saying that “it is the essence of involving the community that makes public service more meaningful.”

Moreno also regard the project as a small victory and little success but “little they may be pero makita sa tao ang epekto (but the people can immediately see its effects).”

The Linear Park Project, which amounted to about P6 million, is funded by UN Habitat and city government in partnership with Barangay 22 Council, Cagayan Electric Power and Light Company, Inc. (CEPALCO), Cagayan de Oro Water District (COWD), University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) and Xavier University.
