Dietary supplement is a product that contains vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids, enzymes, and/or other ingredients intended to supplement the diet. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has special labeling requirements for dietary supplements and treats them as foods, not drugs.

Wars of ancient history were about possessions, territory, power, control, family, betrayal, lover's quarrel, politics and sometimes religion.

But we are in the Modern era and supposedly more educated and enlightened .

Think about this. Don't just brush off these questions.

  • Why is RELIGION still involved in WARS? Isn't religion supposed to be about PEACE?
  • Ask yourself; What religion always campaign to have its religious laws be accepted as government laws, always involved in wars and consistently causing WARS, yet insists that it's a religion of peace?

WHY??

There are only two kinds of people who teach tolerance:
  1. The Bullies. They want you to tolerate them so they can continue to maliciously deprive you. Do not believe these bullies teaching tolerance, saying that it’s the path to prevent hatred and prejudice.
  2. The victims who are waiting for the right moment to retaliate. They can’t win yet, so they tolerate.

DTI-Northern Mindanao enforces price freeze

(CD/PNA)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – A price freeze on basic necessities and prime commodities in Northern Mindanao has been enforced following the declaration of martial law in the entire island of Mindanao, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said Friday.

Linda O. Boniao, DTI director in Northern Mindanao, said the price freeze was automatically enforced on May 23, when President Rodrigo Duterte placed Mindanao under martial law.

She said that pursuant to Republic Act 7581 or the Price Act, prices of basic necessities and prime commodities should remain frozen at their prevailing prices and should be placed under price control once an area is declared under state of calamity or under an emergency situation.

Boniao said that the implementation of the price freeze lasts according to the period indicated in the declaration of martial law.

In his declaration of martial law, President Duterte said that the military rule would last for 60 days unless extended.

Boniao said that the price freeze would, however, cease to take effect even before the 60-day period is completed if Congress revokes the martial law declaration or the Supreme Court considers it null and void.

She said that any business firm found in violation of the Price Act would be charged with an administrative fine of PHP 5,000 to PHP1 million or one to 10 years imprisonment.

By Chin Rus S. Echevarre (PIA10)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, May 25 (PIA) -- A roadmap that will pave way for science and technology innovation (S&T) initiatives to address pressing concerns in the whole Mindanao is now on the works as the Department of Science and Technology Region 10 conducts a symposium-workshop, the first of a series of activities under the DOST supported project of National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) on “Supporting the Development of Partnerships in the S&T Innovation Ecosystem” on 22-23 May 2017 in Cagayan de Oro City.

Providing an opportunity for the participants to delve into current topics and trends, thoroughly examined in an information-packed two-day seminar workshop.

Some of the topics highlighted in the two day seminar is on how three Science and Technology Innovation (STI) hubs/clusters (physical and virtual) can be developed corresponding to the three development corridors of Mindanao, STI and Philippine Development, Mindanao 2020 Peace and Development Framework and the Mindanao Development, Role of Peza in Development Mindanao, Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Development, and on the Role of Communities and IPs in Mindanao Development.

Expected outputs of this event are first drafts of proposals for the establishment of STI hubs and clusters in Mindanao’s development corridors. The proposals will be further expanded and refined in consultation with relevant stakeholders in the Mindanao development corridors.

Calls for scientists’ ‘community sensitivity’

Fr. Alberto Alejo, SJ of Loyola School of Theology in Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) calls for “community sensitivity” among the science and technology (S&T) researchers.

Talking about the role of communities and indigenous peoples (IPs) of Mindanao in development, Fr. Alejo stressed out that in order for the Mindanao communities and IPs to render and perform their contributions to the projects of the government or/with the private companies, researchers must know them first.

“It’s quite important that researchers are being sensitive…If we are serious in including communities, we need to walk…to hear, to listen…,” said Fr. Alejo.

He believes that literally walking around the communities, researchers will be able to hear and listen from the inhabitants of the area. They will be able to know the communities’ statuses, issues, cultures and even conflicts that are present in the area which they must consider first before realizing a certain project otherwise another conflict will arise.

“Include culture and conflict in planning baka masunog (mawala) lang ang mga ito (mga proyekto) [Include culture and conflict in planning lest might lose the projects],” Fr. Alejo said.

Also, he believes that the researchers must make them feel that they are part of the population and that they play an important role in developing the Mindanao and its people through the projects.

“Mindanao is not just an object for project but part of the biography,” he said.

Moreover, Fr. Alejo emphasized the biases towards the Mindanao and Mindanawons. The island and its people, if not being underrepresented, they are either misrepresented or not represented at all. Before, if it’s only heard on the news circulating around the country and even the world, misconceptions about Mindanao and Mindanawons are now taught in schools through Sibika and Social Studies textbooks of the 2nd and 6th graders and even on the charts sold in a famous bookstore in the country.

“At the end of the day, hindi lang poverty ang problema ng Mindanao kun’di injustice (At the end of the day, poverty is not just the problem of Mindanao but also injustice),” said Fr. Alejo.

In the end, Fr. Alejo challenged the scientists and researchers to come up with solutions to the problems in the island, not to cause another one. He also challenged them to make use of what the community can offer such as the abundant natural resources available in the island. They just have to check double times what they can use to develop the Mindanao communities.

“Sabi nila, ‘Think globally, compete globally.’ Para sa’kin, ‘think globally, double check locally (They said, ‘Think globally, compte globally.’ For me, ‘think globally, double check locally),” he said.

Oro Press Freedom Week on

By Abigail Viguella

FORGING unity in the task to uphold democracy, Cagayan de Oro media outlets and organizations kicked start the 35th annual celebration of the national Press Freedom Week on Monday, May 22.

The week-long event is spearheaded originally by the Cagayan de Oro Press Club (COPC) but is also participated by other media organizations in the region.

Sharing the momentous event are the Misamis Oriental-Cagayan de Oro Association of Newspaper Publishers (MOCAP), Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas-Cagayan de oro and Misamis Oriental chapters (KBP-CDO & MisOr), the Philippine National Police Press Corps, the Regional Association of Government Communicators (RAGCOM), Media Health Advocates, and the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines (NUJP).

"Ang atong tema 'Moving Forward for Responsible Journalist for a Change' kay ngano man, nakita man gud nato nga for so many years, kita nga mga taga media nagbikil ug nagpanagaway even outlet against outlet. So kung mahimo, we have to.. atong i-eradicate na and let us work together to be dedicated in this job. (Our theme is 'Moving Forward for Responsible Journalist for a Change' because we see that for so many years, we in the media have conflicts and fights even outlet against outlet. So if possible, we have to eradicate that and work together to be dedicated in this job)," said Phillip Ken Jaudian, overall chairman of the Press Freedom Week activities.

The COPC led on Monday morning’s motorcade around the city, occasionally dropping by to make courtesy calls on some key government offices like the Provincial Capitol, the City Hall, and the regional headquarters of the Philippine National Police in Camp Alagar.

On Tuesday, May 23, about a hundred COPC members are expected to gather for a 5 p.m. mass at the Press Freedom Monument off the Provincial Capitol Grounds.

Misamis Oriental Governor Yevgeny Emano said that he is in full support of the media practice and that all the privileges and benefits due them “must be given unto them especially their freedom of speech.”

“But every member of the media, whether in newspapers, radio, television and social media, should act in conformity to law and that they should be responsible and accountable of all their actions like we all should be,” Emano added.

To achieve the main thrust of the celebration, COPC will conduct activities that will complement the celebration and its theme. Some of these include a lecture on Law on Libel by provincial legal adviser, Lawyer Gil Banaag at the COPC on the first day.

The lecture aims to educate local media more about the basis and foundations of libel offenses in an effort to put more quality on local reporting.

"Well, kanang ingon lagi ni President Duterte na he does not believe in our press freedom, but I would just like to inform you that our country is a democratic country and the freedom of the press is very much practiced. Well, I respect his opinion but that will also not curtail us from being vigilant especially in the field of information," Jaudian said.

The celebration of the Press Freedom Week will have other activities such as a blood-letting mission on Wednesday at the COPC board room. There will also be a two-day inclusive media sports fest at Barangay 24 covered court on Thursday and Friday. The culmination will be held at the Grand City hotel on Saturday, May 27.

Coast Guard 10 marks 18th anniversary

By Cherryl Juranes (PIA10)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Coast Guard District Northern Mindanao (CGDNM) has celebrated its 18th founding anniversary on May at Buffalo Resto Grill here.

With the theme, “Serbisyong Totoo, ambag natin sa Pagbabago,” CGDNM emphasized the value and importance of the true public service not just for the coast guardians but for all the government workers and employees.

In his speech, Engr. Marc Anthony P. Pascua, director of MARINA -10, reminded the coast guardians about the agency's mission and vision which is to “help the maritime industry authority.”

But Pascua added that the coast guardians cannot do all these things by themselves. They need the help and support of all the stakeholders and companies and the partner agencies such as the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philppines (AFP) to realize all these things.

“A coast guard caanot do, na sila sila lang. Kailangan ng tulong ng bawat isa at angkop na angkop ang pagbabago kung tayo’y magbibigay ng tamang serbisyo sa atin pong mga constituents…,” he said.

Moreover, Pascua reminded the coast guardians that it takes a passion and a heart without hesitation to do the true public service.

“Indeed,…in a public service…it’s a passion to keeping your heart without hesitation. Without hesitation, everybody who needs our help, we should respond in accordance to our mandate,” he said.

The program was concluded by the singing of the Coast Guardian March by the participants.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, May 17 – About 3,000 casual and regular employees of the Misamis Oriental provincial government would receive their mid-year bonus this week, Governor Yevgeny Vincente Emano said Wednesday.

Emano said that the mid-year bonus is equivalent to one month salary, which the provincial government usually releases in May as the enrollment for the school year approaches.

He said the mid-year bonus could help the parents in enrolling and acquiring the important school items for their children for the coming school year.

Emano said that aside from the mid-year bonus, provincial capitol employees are also entitled to the 13th month pay given every end of the year.

Michael Beja and Dexter Pillo, both provincial capitol employee, said they were glad of the governor’s announcement, saying the mid-year bonus "is the only way they could pay the tuition fee" for the new school year.

Capitol sponsors check-ups for 120 kids with leukemia

By Abigail Viguella

ABOUT 120 children from different provinces in Northern Mindanao that are suffering from leukemia and anemia were given free medical check-up by the Provincial Capitol in cooperation with the Leukemia Patients and Parents Organization (Leupapo) Thursday, May 11.

The patients, who were aged 3 to about 15 years old are members of the Leupapo and came as far as the provinces of Bukidnon, Lanao del Sur, Zamboanga, and Camiguin. They traveled to Cagayan de Oro City for the free blood and medical check-up at the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC).

Miguela Heinz Sumaylo, a 13-year-old leukemia patient form Barangay Agusan, said the joint programs of Leupapo and the Provincial Government helped in his recovery.

“Na diagnose ako nga naay leukemia katong three years old pa ko. Karon, sa kaluoy sa Ginoo ug sa tanang tabang sa LEUPAPO ug ni Governor Bambi, naa na ko sa final six months of observation sa akong therapy. (I was diagnosed with leukemia when I was three years old. Now, with the mercy of the Lord and with the help of Leupapo and Governor Bambi, I am at my final six months of observation in my therapy),” Sumaylo said.

Aside from the free medical consultation, the patients were also treated with a party by Misamis Oriental Governor Yevgeny Vincente “Bambi” Emano.

Emano said he understands the plight of patients with leukemia and anemia in the region thus his support for the recovery of every patient.

“Di man nako masabtan ang hinungdan sa kini nga sakit, as long as ako gihapon ang gobyernador sa Misamis Oriental, ako jud ipaningkamot na matagaan mo ug sakto nga mga treatment. So bisan asa pa mo gikan, Zamboanga, Lanao, Bukidnon, adto ra mo dire, ug dawaton mo namo mga anak. (I may not understand the cause of this sickness as long as I am the governor of Misamis Oriental, I will work hard to provide the right treatment for you. Wherever you come from, Zamboanga, Lanao, Bukidnon, just come here and we will receive you, my children),” Emano said.

According to Myra Yee, the manager of Northern Mindanao Regional Blood Center, there is a need for more blood donations in the region to aid patients who are suffering from leukemia and anemia. There are indeed times when the blood supply in the blood center could not meet the need of the patients.

“This is why we are encouraging everyone to donate blood. It may not mean much for them but these children need fresh, clean blood regularly in order to live,” Yee said.

Interested donors could come to any Blood Center in the region to donate blood for the leukemia and anemia patients.

Misamis Oriental spends PHP9M for SPES since 2013

By Nicole Roa Managbanag (PNA)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, May 11 (PNA) – The provincial government of Misamis Oriental has spent at least PHP9 million for payment of wages under the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) since 2013, Governor Yevgeny Vincente Emano said Thursday.

He said that about 3,766 students and out-of-school youth had benefited from the summer job program administered by the Provincial Employment and Services Office in the last four years.

The program is carried out in coordination with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) under Republic Act No. 9547, also known as “An Act to Help Poor but Deserving Students,” by providing students with jobs during summer or Christmas season.

Emano said the provincial government pays 60 percent while the DOLE shoulders the remaining 40 percent of the salary due to a SPES beneficiary.

This year, 825 students and out-of-school youths would be spread out in the various municipalities in Misamis Oriental’s first and second districts after undergoing an orientation, he said.

Emano said the provincial government has allocated PHP2.4 million, while the DOLE has a counterpart of PHP1.6 million, for the salaries of the SPES beneficiaries who availed of the summer jobs this year.

BPO tower opening in Cagayan de Oro to usher 4,000 IT jobs

By Pamela Jay F. Orias

AT LEAST 4,000 more information technology (IT) jobs will be available soon with the opening of the eight-floor business process outsourcing (BPO) tower as part of the new SM Cagayan de Oro Downtown Premier set to open this Friday, May 12.

The opening of the tower for business is expected to cement Cagayan de Oro City’s reputation as an IT-BPO hub in the region.

The City Council on Monday, May 8, declared the SM BPO tower, which has eight floors of prime office space, as an operating economic zone of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza).

Among the conditions stipulated in accrediting the BPO tower is requiring the SM Prime Holdings Inc. and all its IT/BPO locators and lessees to employ 4,000 of their manpower from Cagayan de Oro City residents, in coordination with the Public Employment Services Office (Peso).

Councilor George Goking, chairman of the committee on trade and commerce, said the city could generate over 40,000 jobs from SM's BPO tower.

“We will make sure that Kagay-anons would be prioritized in the employment, that they will benefit from this development firsthand because that's the way it should be,” Goking said

According to the conditions, SM Prime Holdings Inc., will continue to pay the Real Property Tax (RPT) on buildings or spaces that are leased out to commercial establishments, whose activities are not qualified for Peza registration.

These commercial establishments will also continue to pay all local government taxes.

The SM incentive will be limited to the income that will be derived from leasing out spaces to Peza-registered companies, and this particular income shall be subject to the special 5 percent tax on gross income in lieu of the national and local taxes.

About 3 percent of the tax will be remitted to the National Government while another 2 percent will be directly remitted to the City Treasurer's Office.

If in case the SM will not be able to lease out any space to registered Peza IT-BPO company, the condition stated that it cannot also avail the special 5 percent income tax.

To date, there are at least 15 BPO companies operating in Cagayan de Oro and employing some 2,000 agents, according to the Information and Technology Council in the city.

With this, the city has earlier been included in the “next wave cities” or the next hubs for the information technology and business process management (IT-BPM) sector in the country, as it passed the following criteria: talent, infrastructure, cost, and business environment.

The first premier mall development in the city, the 177,743 square meter mall will include 5 floors of retail, dining, and entertainment options, such as a food hall, a cyberzone, bowling center, state-of-the-art cinemas, Sky Park and an 800-seater Sky Hall as an events venue.

The mall also features a rainwater catchment system for flood prevention, which can hold up to 13,650 cubic meters of water.

Misamis Oriental turns over PHP3M for ‘Brigada Eskwela 2017’

By Nicole Roa Managbanag (PNA)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, May 9 (PNA) – The provincial government of Misamis Oriental has turned over PHP3 million for 349 public elementary schools and 81 secondary public high schools in the province for their “Brigada Eskwela 2017” activities next week.

Governor Yevgeny Vincente Emano said that Maylinda Vequezo, district supervisor of the Department of Education in Northern Mindanao, accepted the check during Monday's flag-raising ceremony at the provincial capitol.

He said the cash assistance would be distributed to the various public schools in Misamis Oriental in order for parents and teachers to prioritize the needs of the school.

”Small public schools would be extended PHP5,000 while medium-sized public schools would get PHP10,000. The big public schools would be entitled to PHP15,000 cash assistance,” Emano said.

He said the provincial government decided to extend cash assistance "to unburden the parents from donating money intended for the minor repair of public schools."

Emano said that the amount could be used for the repair and painting of classrooms or the construction of pathways and canals in preparation for the rainy days during the opening of classes in June.

Cagayan de Oro City keen on improving health services

By Pamela Jay F. Orias

THE Cagayan de Oro City Government will pour most of its budget this year to improving and providing the best health services.

After the groundbreaking of the city-owned rehab, City Mayor Oscar Moreno bares his plan to build another rehabilitation clinic inside the city jail in Lumbia village, and a mental hospital for the mentally-challenged persons in the city.

He said there is a need to build a rehab clinic inside the jail, where 80 percent of its inmates are facing drug-related cases.

"There must also be a rehab program inside the jail, it is how our penal system should work, one reason is retribution, to make the criminal realize that what he did was wrong, while the other one is, rehabilitation, so that when he or she comes out of the jail, he or she would be a better citizen," he said.

"Kinahanglan tagaan pud nato ug facility ang Lumbia nga conducive sa rehabilitation. Lisod man kaayo nga imong mga inmates dadto naa lang sa salog over loaded, overcrowded. Imbis nga ma i-rehabilitate sila, imo hinoong gi-harden ang kriminal," he said

Aside from the city jail's rehab clinic plan, Moreno said the plan to build the city's own mental hospital will push through.

In the past years, City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD) chief Teddy Sabuga-a said the city has been transporting its mentally-challenged persons to Davao City for treatment because of the lack of facility here.

Sabuga-a said the number of mentally-challenged individuals have been rising, and that it is also becoming risky to transport them for about seven to eight hours to reach Davao City.

To temporarily answer the need, the City Government last year signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) of Davao City in June last year.

The MOU allows the city to transport mentally-challenged persons here to Davao City for treatment.

Another way is the launching of telepsychiatry where psychiatric assessment and attention is provided through telecommunications and video conferencing.

In this way, the city would no longer need to send the patients to other cities to have them checked by the doctors personally.

But Moreno said this has not worked 100 percent, saying that the results are still way productive if a patient and doctor meet and talk face-to-face.

Both projects would start within the year and will be hopefully used next year.

The industry sector is composed of the mining and quarrying industry and the construction and the manufacturing industry, while services involved education, transport, banking and the trading sectors.

Leon M. This year’s Brigada Eskwela is themed "Isang Deped, Isang Pamayanan, Isang Bayanihan Para sa Handa at Ligtas na Paaralan.”

3,635 jobseekers join Labor Day job fair

By Pamela Jay F. Orias (With reports from Marc Salem and Althea Rana, Liceo de Cagayan University interns)

ABOUT 3,635 job applicants flocked to the mega job fair organized by the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole), which offered at least 6,849 jobs, last Monday, May 1, both in Cagayan de Oro City and Oroquieta City.

According to Dole, they recorded 3,419 job seekers in Cagayan de Oro, which comprised of 1,783 males, and 1,636 females.

However of the total 2,192 qualified applicants for both local and overseas jobs, only 297 applicants for local work were hired on the spot while 352 persons were near hire applicants, or those that are considered hired, but still need to submit additional requirements to the firm where they applied.

For foreign work, only 35 people were hired on the spot while 313 are near hire applicants.

Meanwhile, some applicants were referred to the different participating agencies.

About 10 applicants were referred to Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) for skills training, two applicants referred for livelihood assistance, three were referred to the Department of Trade and Industry for business opportunities, while 27 applicants were advised to go to National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Social Security System (SSS), Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC), Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (Owwa), National Reintegration Center for OFWs, PhilHealth, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), and the National Council on Disability Affairs.

Among the in-demand jobs include skilled workers like carpenters, plumbers and food servers are needed in Middle East countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and also in Taiwan and New Zealand, while Japan and Germany are looking for care workers and nurses.

Top local job vacancies include call center agents, property consultants, staff nurses, field construction officers, and sales associates, while top overseas vacancies include nurses, service crew, food servers/waiters, cleaner and caregivers.

Meanwhile, Wildon Barros, secretary general of Kilusang Mayo Uno-Northern Mindanao said job seekers are grappling on how to get a job because of a growing mismatch between their training and the job skills required by most employers in the country and overseas.

Barros said this is due to the country's commercialized education where schools are the ones who choose a course for a student, when this task should be done by the government.

"There is an existing commercialization in education, meaning students will just choose on their own on what course they should take up. But I am not saying that this is a bad thing, what I am saying is, the courses being offered now do not have a matching or corresponding job," he said.

"The government should make sure that once a student graduates, he or she has a waiting job, and they will not end up unemployed or underemployed,| Barros added.
