Dietary supplement is a product that contains vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids, enzymes, and/or other ingredients intended to supplement the diet. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has special labeling requirements for dietary supplements and treats them as foods, not drugs.

Manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplements and dietary ingredients are prohibited from marketing products that are adulterated or misbranded. That means that these firms are responsible for evaluating the safety and labeling of their products before marketing to ensure that they meet all the requirements of DSHEA and FDA regulations.

Wars of ancient history were about possessions, territory, power, control, family, betrayal, lover's quarrel, politics and sometimes religion.

But we are in the Modern era and supposedly more educated and enlightened .

Think about this. Don't just brush off these questions.

  • Why is RELIGION still involved in WARS? Isn't religion supposed to be about PEACE?
  • Ask yourself; What religion always campaign to have its religious laws be accepted as government laws, always involved in wars and consistently causing WARS, yet insists that it's a religion of peace?

WHY??

There are only two kinds of people who teach tolerance:
  1. The Bullies. They want you to tolerate them so they can continue to maliciously deprive you. Do not believe these bullies teaching tolerance, saying that it’s the path to prevent hatred and prejudice.
  2. The victims who are waiting for the right moment to retaliate. They can’t win yet, so they tolerate.

By Jasper Marie Oblina - Rucat (JMOR/PIA10)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA) – Department of Science and Technology (DOST) region 10 is all set for Technology Transfer Day in Cagayan de Oro City on 8 September 2017 at Xavier Sports and Country Club as part of the 26th Mindanao Business Conference 2017 organized by Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation Inc. (Oro Chamber).

During a discussion in Talakayan sa Limketkai Luxe, DOST regional director Alfonso Alamban said a total of 30 technologies from DOST assisted institutions and inventors all over the Philippines will be displayed and showcased.

He explained that these technologies were selected according to the needs of current market in the region. So far, he said that many of the technologies selected was for the food industry such as in food processing, among others. Further, these technologies are already patent ready and have gone through Intellectual Property Policy.

He said DOST - Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI) from central office will also be in the event to assist and explain the technologies to be displayed. They will also assist in inquiries session with investors.

Alamban said this event of DOST is one way of supporting and promoting Filipino inventors and inventions. Instead of companies and Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) looking for technologies outside the country, technologies made by our own inventors are brought in the city for easy access. He said, this is cheaper and more practical because inventors are based here and can be easily called upon for questions about its operations.

Although there are no technologies coming from Northern Mindanao during this Technology Transfer Day in Cagayan de Oro City, Alamban said they are urging inventors from the academe and even professionals to get their inventions patented. This is one way, one requirement of making the product market ready.

Among the Innovation Centers that DOST 10 is supporting is the one at University of Science and Technology (USTP) in Cagayan de Oro City called Food Innovation Center. This center houses technologies for food processing. Not only that, students conduct research in the center by innovating food and coming up with new food products for the market. So far there are ready for patent food innovation products in the center.

Through Republic Act (RA) 10055 or the “Philippine Technology Transfer Act”, DOST has been pushing for an enabling ecosystem that could facilitate smoother and faster transfer of local technologies into the mainstream market.

ASEAN--An artistic powerhouse with diverse, unique, colorful stories to tell

By Jasper Marie Oblina - Rucat (JMOR/PIA10)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Aug 29 (PIA) -- Diverse, unique and colorful are some of the words to describe art culture in the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) region.

In an interview with Dr. Erlinda Burton, anthropologist and Museum curator at Xavier University Cagayan de Oro City, one of the interesting characteristics of art and culture in the region is its similarity more than its differences.

For one, we have the same linguistic stock which is Austronesian. Countries like the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hawaii and even natives of Taiwan have the same root language.

Further, among our commonalities include the use of vibrant colors and images we select that although we are separated, we have commonalities because we have the same ancestral groups.

In the Philippines we have various kinds of arts from our ancestors, Burton said. These include indigenous or traditional art such as from Maranao weaving, Tinalac, T’boli, Mandaya and Manobo among many others.

She said that through art whether, in the performing arts, traditional and contemporary arts, we can show solidarity of culture. Art is a medium to solidarity and peace, living together in harmony among ASEAN countries.

Meanwhile, Rhyan Casiño of Dire Husi, an initiative on youth collective of visual and performing arts based in Cagayan de Oro City explained the importance to support local artists in the region through education and avenues for art expression.

He said that to sustain artists and continue expression of culture through art, community must learn to appreciate and patronage local art. He added that there must also be a venue to express art.

Art is who you are, your passion. It’s a gift, a calling and advocacy. Theater arts and performing arts and even visual arts are tools to interpret issues, Casiño shared.

In Mindanao alone are 300 tribes with diverse stories to tell and share. He also urged to make use of social media to make ASEAN art viral all over the world.

David James Yañez, a local choreographer in Cagayan de Oro City shares that they are fighting mainstream. The kind of music and dance today are those from the west. He said that culture evolves and although it’s fine to know and appreciate new music but it is equally important to know your roots.

Cagayan de Oro animators to release 'Division of Existence' anime

By Angelo Lorenzo (Rappler.com)

Inspired by Japanese animation style, Filipinos from Mindanao spearhead the production of 'Sonzai no Kyoukai (Division of Existence)'

https://youtu.be/mJRWbScYRj0

CAGAYAN DE ORO, Philippines – In 2030, a portal opens and paranormal entities from another dimension breach into the human world.

Restrained in prisons built by the military organization Global Security, monsters can find no way to threaten humanity – until one of them breaks the prison and escapes.

John Salazar, a warden in one of the containment facilities, faces his most daunting challenge yet as he is tasked to search for the monster before it unleashes insurmountable danger out in the open.

This is the premise of the upcoming animated film currently under production by Team XGN, the animation group of the Xygen CG Works, a rising company based in Cagayan de Oro.

A hybrid of 2D and 3D animation, the 10-minute film entitled Sonzai no Kyoukai (Division of Existence), has been anticipated by local fans of the genre since it was announced in March.

Inspired by Japanese animation style, it is one of the many creations born out of the talents of local and international artists, with Filipinos from Mindanao spearheading the project.

Passion project

Xygen CG Works head Dave Gadrinab said the project was made out of passion.

"Just like our previous projects, Division of Existence was originally planned only for Japan and the United States," said Gadrinab. He previously worked as an animator outsourced by companies in those countries and was mentored by Japanese creative team Anigo Animation.

He said they are planning to set some scenes of the film in Cagayan de Oro.

Inspired by modern Japanese pop culture, the film also traces its themes from Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy and horror films like Paul Anderson’s Event Horizon and James Cameron’s Aliens.

The main character, John Salazar, attempts to fight the paranormal with style – integrating the otherworldly prowess of Death Note’s Light Yagami, Marvel’s the Punisher, and DC’s Constantine.

In a <preview clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jZOuW6GRBo>, uploaded on their Youtube channel, Salazar speaks with a gun pointed to the screen, his hair and eyes in the shade of red and a cigarette stick tucked between his lips. He appears to talking with another character.

Gadrinab said his team is planning to upload the film on Youtube so that it would reach a wider viewership, specifically targetting Filipinos as primary audience.

Collaboration

The creators of the film, currently in different parts of the world, work towards the completion of the anime online. They started producing Division of Existence in November 2016.

Joseph Manuel, Gadrinab's brother, is currently in San Fernando City in Pampanga. He is on top of special effects and music. Linil Komban and Sri Mule, who animates the characters, are both based in India; while American writer Caleb Mills takes charge of the script.

Prior to Division of Existence, they have been heavily immersed in the animation industry.

Brad Arces, who supervises animatics, shared that the team is trained on hand-drawn animation. To keep pace with recent trend, they have consolidated both hand-drawn and 3-dimensional aspects into the film by utilizing Blender – a free software for animation, game creation, and video editing.

Arces shared that Division of Existence is the company’s first animated film with an original concept by the team.

"As the team already has enough experience by being involved with projects from different animation studios, we decided to create something from scratch and call it our own," he said.

Challenges

Yet refining each frame still faces hurdles. A project shaped by ideas still requires the right amount of resources.

Xygen CG Works receives support from the Cagayan de Oro Business, Incubation, Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Start-ups, a program of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines and the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology, Research and Development. Its studio is based in the state university.

Patreon currently funds the project, a social networking website catered to artists of different genre.

While the team actively advertises the film through their website, sponsors can also support them by promoting their film through social media platforms and by purchasing their merchandise.

Arces is positive the film will likely succeed. "I see CDO to be one of the best providers when it comes to animation with the project that we are currently making....One of our goals is to get more investors to help us build our own animation studio," he said.

"It will also depend on the people – if they like the film – for it to succeed," Arces said.

Artist support in the country?

Arces said there is a lack of support for Filipino artists in the country.

"As a fellow artist, I really believe in the local talents that we have here," said Arces.

He said that the lack of support in the field has discouraged the artists, eventually "seeking for greener pastures instead of paving their own path to pursue art" in the country.

Set to be released later this year, Division of Existence hopes to inspire fellow artists – particularly animators – across the country to add more colors into the vibrant art scene through their original works.

"If you want to succeed in the [animation] industry, you need to be willing to do a lot of sacrifices. You also need to make a plan, find the right people, and work with the right team," he said.

Soldier’s son from Cagayan de Oro felt fulfilled by third championship with Cignal HD Spikers

(ABS-CBN Sports)

Team captain Saku Capate and Vince Mangulabnan of Cignal got their wish – to add the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference championship to the former’s MVP award and to the latter’s best setter trophy.

Surprised and inspired by the unannounced appearance of his wife Bang and four-year-old only child Oyo in the winner-take-all match between the HD Spikers and the Sta. Elena-backed Mega Builders, Capate went on to bag the Finals MVP as well.

Best libero Sandy Montero of Imus, Cavite, could have been as overjoyed as Capate and Vince Mangulabnan, but perhaps none of them could have matched the depth of happiness and self-fulfillment that their teammate from Cagayan de Oro, Edmar Bonono, a former beach volley specialist and a soldier’s son, felt over Cignal’s second straight title this season.

Relegated to being a first-choice replacement during the elimination round of the Open Conference, Coach Oliver Almadro started the high-leaping Bonono in the semifinals against the Sta. Elena Wrecking Balls while the one Bonono replaced, Mark Alfafara, was away with the national team’s training camp in Korea.

Almadro, architect of the Ateneo Blue Eagles’ three-peat in the UAAP, was so obviously impressed by Bonono’s performance that he gambled on using him thru the best-of-three finals even with the return of Alfafara.

Bonono contributed a total of 17 points as the HD Spikers swept the Wrecking Balls in their semifinal playoff, then came through with a whopping 35 points, averaging 11.67 per game, when his team outlasted the Mega Builders in the extended finals series.

“I really, really prayed hard to be given enough playing time,” said Bonono in Filipino. “The opportunity came when Mark (Alfafara) went with the national team to Korea to train. Coach O (Oliver) began using me as a starter in the semifinals. I gave my 101 percent each time I was sent to the court. I was greatly pleased when he still used me as a starter throughout the finals even with the return of Mark.”

Bonono said he was deeply grateful to Almadro and his assistants for trusting in him. “My teammates will never know how happy I was to be given the chance to prove my worth.” His gratitude also went to Cignal for giving him the opportunity to earn and send himself through college.

Bonono was recruited from University of Southern Philippines Foundation in Cebu City for which he played beach volleyball. He continued his studies in Philippine Christian University where he recently finished Bachelor of Science in Social Work.

Joseph Erickson Ramos was equally grateful to coach Almadro for taking him into the team. He was with the HD Spikers in their victory in the Reinforced Conference earlier in the year.

Dinner and trip to Japan

With their family and friends, the HD Spikers were treated to dinner at a Japanese restaurant along Edsa following the title win.

Bonono and Ramos said the team will be going to Japan in September as part of their prizes from management. It is also expected that they will get hefty bonuses from Cignal TV, a member of the MVP Group of Companies.

As the new PVL First Conference champions then, the HD Spikers, said Bonono, was presented to Manuel V. Pangilinan himself, one of the most respected business tycoons in the country.

“I was humbled when I met up with the owner of our sponsoring company.”

DOST to showcase local business matching tech

By Pamela Jay F. Orias

THE Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Northern Mindanao is set to join and exhibit some 30 locally-developed technologies for business matching at the Mindanao Business Conference on September 7 to 9 at the Xavier Estates Sports and Country Club, Upper Balulang, Cagayan de Oro City.

DOST-Northern Mindanao regional director Alfonso Alamban said they will showcase technologies from DOST-recognized research centers by bringing technology generators, investors, and stakeholders in a unique opportunity "to build relationships and forge technology transfer deals between industry players and the DOST's leading innovators."

"We will bring our investors, so it will be like a meeting between investors and inventors. Who knows maybe they like the technologies and invest on it," Alamban said during the weekly Talakayan sa PIA at the Limketkai Luxe Hotel.

Alamban said the Mindanaoan entrepreneurs could adopt these locally-developed technologies for the mainstream market and be commercialized.

Business matching is part of the Regional Technology Transfer Day 2017, an initiative of the DOST as part of its mandate to ensure Filipino technologies are maximized for the benefit of society and local industries, as guided by Republic Act 10055 or the Philippine Technology Transfer Act of 2009.

"It's best to invest in locally-developed technologies because quality is assured, and aside from helping our investors and promoting our own scientists, when these equipment needs updating or needs to get fixed, they can easily be reached compared sa muadto pa sa gawas sa country (to those who go outside the country) to get the work done," he said.

About 1,000 business executives, investors, industry players, policy makers, micro, small, and medium enterprises are expected to attend this year's business conference with the theme "Emerging Opportunities-One Mindanao."

In the same press conference, Ruben Vegafria, chairman of MinBizcon 2017 said it's "all systems go" for what could be the biggest gathering of businessmen and policy makers in Mindanao for this year.

"We are prepared, everything is done, as we speak. At first we thought the martial law declaration and what's happening in Marawi was going to affect our preparations, our attendees, but it didn't."

Initially, Vegafria said they were expecting over a thousand guests but the fighting in Marawi City caused some cancellations. He said they are now expecting at least 800 to 1000 guests.

But he added that foreign guests, such as the Ambassador of Russia and the Philippines’ ambassador to China, are still coming.

"We are also considering the fact that maybe some others aren't going to come, because of the skirmishes. But generally it's comforting to know that despite the skirmishes, the business interest of people in Mindanao is still rising," he said.

"We decided to proceed because this is the time that Mindanaons and Kagay-anons should form a solid front in so far as trying to declare to all that it is business as usual here," he added.

Exclusive breastfeeding campaign continues in CDO

By Jasper Marie Oblina - Rucat (JMOR/PIA10)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Aug. 21 (PIA) – In an episode of Talakayan sa PIA on 15 August 2017, Department of Health (DOH) region 10 explained the importance of mothers giving exclusive breastfeeding to their newborn up to six months.

This is a crucial stage wherein a mother’s milk is what the baby needs and nothing else. Apart from that, this is where the baby gets all the nutrients and immunity to survive the world outside the womb.

Gilda Ajoc, Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative Program Coordinator of DOH region 10 shared that some mothers might think that they don’t have the milk or that the baby doesn’t like the mother’s milk but in fact all mothers are capable of providing for their baby just fine without the prejudice of taste whatsoever.

She explained that breastfeeding is like supply and demand. Because the mother knows she has to feed an infant, automatically the milk will flow. With the right positioning and mindset, the mother can produce milk.

Meanwhile, Jacqueline Roa, nutrition dietitian of Provincial Health Office Misamis Oriental said that based on their observation, most of the young mothers today are not exclusively breastfeeding their infants from zero to six months. That is why this campaign is crucial to involve every mother and would-be mother in the country.

Statistics shows that exclusive breastfeeding from zero to six months old is decreasing in region 10 for the past years. In 2016, only 70.78 percent mothers have breastfed their child from zero to six months. According to Telesfora Madelo, nutritionist-dietitian of DO- 10 that this is because the women now are working. Although, women should work but they should also continue to breastfeed their children.

In fact, working mothers are given time off by companies to pump milk in a designated area in the office and have a storage facility to keep safe for the baby upon arriving home. DOH is also leading an Infant and Young Child Feeding Task Force wherein they monitor breastfeeding areas in malls, offices and public areas.

Further, Madelo also reiterated about Overview of the Philippine Milk Code (EO51) and its revised Rules and Regulations wherein breastmilk substitutes are not allowed to be marketed for replacement of breastmilk and will not be tolerated for donation. For those violating the code, anyone can report to DOH.

DOH reiterated the breastmilk is the only milk that is complete with all the nutrients a child needs, poor or rich, the content of breastmilk is still the same. Further, no company has yet produced anything close to breastmilk, DOH stressed.

CDO to launch local 'Rescue 911'

By Mark Francisco (PNA)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — This city will soon have its own localized 911 system in an effort to speed up dispatch of emergency services.

A "localized" 911 dispatch system is seen to be faster, where calls will not have to be routed to a central emergency dispatch center outside the city, said City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) head Allan Porcadilla.

Porcadilla explained that emergency calls under the nationwide Rescue 911 launched last year are routed in a central command in Manila before they are transferred to their respective origins.

Cagayan de Oro, a city of 675,950 people, needs a speedy rescue system to better respond to the emergency needs of its burgeoning population, Porcadilla said.

Under the locally-operated 911 rescue unit, Porcadilla said the city government will be able to directly receive calls and appropriate respond the nature of emergencies—medical, police, fire, bomb defusers, hazardous materials containment, and other emergency situations.

The city's CDRRMO has been consistently awarded for the past five years as the best local disaster management in Region 10.

However, it recently received criticisms for allegedly taking too long in the rescue of multiple victims at a vehicular accident last month.

Porcadilla said the new 911 system will be available to all PLDT, Globe and Smart subscribers.

Mayor Oscar Moreno will activate the local 911 system by taking the first ceremonial call on August 28.

“Just dial 911, stay on the line and our call center will handle the rest,” he said. The CDRRMO 911 emergency dispatch center will be located at the City Hall campus and will be manned 24/7 by operators who were trained by Davao Central 911.

The previous head of Davao Central 911, retired Col. Mario Verneer Monsanto, is the Cagayan de Oro CDRRMO consultant.

Driving class for 20T PUV drivers in NorMin

By Jigger Jerusalem (PNA)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Thousands of public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers in Northern Mindanao are expected to go back to driving class as part of the nationwide launch of the Public Utility Drivers Academy Program (Pudap).

Not only will the PUV drivers be able to polish their skills behind the wheels, but they will also to learn about road courtesy and even personal grooming, said Aminoden Guro, regional director of Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB-10).

Pudap, enacted through Executive Order 202, mandates LTFRB to formulate and implement policies that require operators and drivers of public land transportation service to attend trainings on transport management, road safety and good driving habits, Dir. Guro said.

Guro said the special classes are held twice a week and will have five modules during the eight-hour session, among them, a discussion on the terms and conditions of the Certificate of Public Covnenience (CPC), road safety, road rage and anger management, traffic signs and pavement markings, and good grooming.

He said the agency expects at least 20,000 participants throughout the region.

PUV drivers immediately welcomed the initiative.

Sarlindo Gaid, 33, a resident of Barangay Bulua, this city, and a taxi driver, said that although he is already aware of his responsibilities, the LTFRB’s program is very helpful to him while he is on the road.

“I already know about traffic rules, but I am sure that LTFRB will teach me additional knowledge that I can use as a driver,” Gaid said.

George Kabayao, 52, a driver of one of the biggest bus companies in the country, said it has been a long time since he had attended a driving lesson.

“I hope that LTFRB will refresh my driving skills as I am open to learn new things. As a bus driver, I need to be updated on road and safety tips,” Kabayao said.

Meanwhile, Guro warned that operators or drivers who fail to comply with the program will risk suspension of their license, on top of the penalty amounting to P5,000.

He added that the re-training program will serve as a continuing education for drivers and will be done on a yearly basis.

MetroPac to supply bulk water to Oro

By Pamela Jay Orias

THE Cagayan de Oro Water District (COWD) and MetroPac Water Investments (MPW) Corporation on Tuesday, August 15, signed a joint venture agreement for the supply of bulk treated water to the city.

Last March 21, the MPW, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC) was awarded the 100 million liters per day (MLD) Bulk Water Project after undergoing a comparative challenge as required by the 2013 Revised Joint Venture Guidelines of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda).

The project has a term of 30 years, and renewable for another 20 years, and involves the supply of up to 100 MLD of treated bulk water, as well as construction of transmission lines and rehabilitation of the Camaman-an Reservoir to supply the COWD, which currently has about 90,000 service connections.

Ed Montalvan, chairman of the COWD board of directors, welcomed the deal, pointing out that this would supply the increasing demand of water in the city.

"This will be more than enough to supply the more than 90,000 service connections of the district and will allow us to face the challenges of a growing metropolis," he said, in a text message.

City Mayor Oscar Moreno led the team of City Government officials on Tuesday to witness the signing ceremony at Makati Shangri-la.

Aside from the construction of new water lines, the project will also facilitate the delivery of bulk treated water to serve the city's western side, which currently relies on deep wells for its water supply.

RAGCOM-NM conducts bloodletting activity

By Amy Baiño (PIO/DAR)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- The Regional Association of Government Communicators Northern Mindanao (RAGCOM-NM) recently conducted a blood donation activity in Cagayan de Oro City dubbed “GIVE so others may LIVE” A Bloodletting Activity.

About 93 individuals volunteered, however only 50 of them qualified to donate blood after the medical personnel from the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) examined their health conditions. These 50 bags of blood collected has a total volume of 22,500cc that can save 150 lives in times of emergency, said Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Information Officer Noli dela Rita, a consistent blood donor and a galloner awardee for many times already.

This daylong activity was among the priority projects of the association to address the pressing needs of more blood supply brought about by the ongoing crisis in Marawi where hundreds of soldiers were wounded, said RAGCOM President Merlyn Ybañez. In an interview she reiterated the importance of raising public awareness on bringing back the Filipino value of volunteerism and enliven the spirit of “bayanihan” by way of donating one’s blood.

Ybañez expressed her deepest gratitude foremost to all the blood donors who braved the needles and shared an ounce of their own blood. She also expressed her appreciation to those who, in one way or another have contributed to the huge success of this activity.

“This wouldn’t be possible if not for the vibrant partnership and collective efforts of our sponsors namely: PRC, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, BFP, Philhealth and our collaborator—the Rotary Club Bay Area who brought in quite a number of volunteers,” said Ybañez.

The RAGCOM president is also thankful to the communication allies, media that helped them promote the event.

As its way of thanking the blood donors and partners, RAGCOM offered them a live musical entertainment while the bloodletting was going on.

Aussie company to provide 500 e-jeepneys ‘for free’

By Elena Gomez (MSU-Marawi intern)

A COMPANY is offering to provide 500 electric jeepneys or e-jeepneys to a group of drivers in the city for free within five years to replace old and dilapidated jeepneys that will be phased out following the Department of Transportation's (DOTr) phaseout order.

The company, called Star 8 Green Technology Corporation, committed to give e-jeepneys which are solar powered made in Australia for free to the Cagayan de Oro's First Taxi Driver's Allegiance (CAFITADA), Transport Federation of Cagayan de Oro (Trafeco), and the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide (Piston).

The e-jeepneys will be free, provided the drivers follow the company's system which includes training and seminars for the drivers, CAFITADA President Bernardo Jamaca said.

"Ang first 500 units para sa atong organisasyon, ihatag nila nga libre pero sa paagi nga musunod ta sa ilang sistema, nga ang atong mga drivers atong ipatraining, ipaseminar. Ato pung sundon tong ginatawag nga advertising plan. Kay ilang iadvertise ang unit ug sila mugasto tanan ang amo lang is free operation kanang gitawag nila nga operations uplift naa diri sa atong memorandum of understanding," he said.

Initially, the company said that the drivers will have 500 peso wage daily and will only be required to work for 8 hours.

These units will be turned over to the group of drivers after five years replacing diesel jeepneys set to be phased out two to three years from now, Jamaca said.

Jamaca said they are powerless in the face of the planned jeepney phase out, adding they have no choice but to "embrace modernization."

The said phase out order was signed last June 19 under the Omnibus Franchising Guidelines by the DOTr to modernize jeepneys and lessen accidents.

"Wala naman ta'y mahimo kay napirmahan naman tong omnibus franchising guidelines, it has been signed since June 19 kni nga tuig lang, maong nabalaka ta kay mawad-an ug kinabuhi atong mga driver maong atong gihimuag paagi nga naay ikapuli nga mga unit nga dili sad sila masakitan," Jamaca added.

The 20-seater e-jeepneys cost P1.4 million each, while the 25-seater is worth P1.6 million. The vehicles are available in manual and automatic variants.

City Councilor Teodulfo Lao Jr. Took not of the proposal to replace the city’s old jeepneys but said the proposal still has a long way to go.

Lao said the City Council has yet to receive any formal letter by the Australian company.

Lao said this plan will all be consolidated as they craft a local transport routing plan for the city.

"Ato pang tan-awon kay gahimo man ta ug local transport routing plan. All issues of our transport system in the city will be discussed in the transport routing plan, but this is a very good proposal because environment-friendly sad siya and it will be given free, so we'll see," he added.

Yantai City seeks sisterhood with Oro

By Pamela Jay F. Orias

THE City of Yantai, China, wants to forge a “sisterhood relationship” with Cagayan de Oro City.

Yantai follows suit after Harbin City in China forged a relationship with the city.

In his letter to the City Council, Mayor Oscar Moreno said Yantai City, in the province of Shandong, China, seeks to enter a Sisterhood Relationship with Cagayan de Oro to enhance "mutual understanding and friendship and strengthening friendly exchange and cooperation" between the two countries.

Oro baristas exhibit latte art skills for a day

By Abigail Viguella

COFFEE art took center stage in one of Higalaay Festival's events with the 2017 “Latte Art Throwdown” at the Centrio Ayala Mall activity center on Sunday, August 6.

As an annual event alongside the city's fiesta, the Latte Art Throwdown is organized by the Mindanao Barista Community, the Jamaican F&B Training Center Incorporated, the Barista Starter Pack, and the Filipino Bartending/Barista Innovators in Mindanao.

According to the event's organizers, Latte Art making is considered as one of the skills that will justly define the capacity of a barista. This is highlighted in the event as the city's renowned coffee shop owners and baristas were invited to show off their Latte art skills.

Latte Art is a trained craft among baristas and coffee shop owners wherein coffee is decorated with an image produced through mixing coffee with milk or foam. So much training is needed to master the art of coffee decoration as it is one of the major requirements before becoming a certified barista.

Some of the most well-known latte art patterns that baristas do are the rosetta, ballerina, swan, fern, heart, apple, and butterfly.

The competition was divided into two categories, professional and student. Being the only institute in Cagayan de Oro City to cater barista training, Jamaican F&B Training Center presented fifteen of their students as participants.

On the other hand, the seventeen baristas on the professional category came from various beloved coffee shops all over the city such as Krispy Kreme, Coffeeholic, Cafe Pilar, JCO, Mai Craft, Espressini, and others.

The 2017 Latte Art Throwdown was filled with the excitement and bond of the baristas who are showing off their skills in the craft. Each of them aims to be unique to the other baristas by creating complicated patterns in their mugs of coffee.

Some of the barista judges of the event are renowned baristas and coffee shop owners from Bukidnon who have gained the respect in the craft of latte art through years of practice.

Representatives from the Oro Chamber of Commerce, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, and the Torani products in the Philippines were also present in the event.

The coffee Latte arts were judged according to definition or the clarity of the latte image, aesthetic beauty, symmetry, degree of difficulty, and creativity.

After a whole afternoon of coffee mixing and decorating, Carlven Agbayani came out as champion for the student category while Carlitos Candido of Mai Craft was proclaimed as champion for the professional category.

Aside from receiving trophies, the two winners will be given the chance to participate in the “Latte Art Battle of Champions” which will be held in Mindanao later this year.

Oro eyes high-tech warning system for flood-prone areas

By PJ Orias

AIMING to have a high-tech early flood and weather warning system, the Cagayan de Oro City Government enters an agreement with the Department of Science and Technology and the Philippine Atmospheric Geological and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

The city forged a project with them called "Development of Early Warning System (DEWS) in Flood Prone Areas in the Philippines" now at work with committee on police, fire and public safety, but will soon be up for approval by the city councilors.

The DOST, in its statement, saw the need to support the establishment of an equipment and facility to provide real-time weather situation for Cagayan de Oro, which is known as a flood-prone city.

Once the proposed resolution will be approved, the city will be in-charge of the installation and operation of the weather monitoring equipment, particularly one unit of Automated Rain Gauge (ARG), one unit of tandem (ARG+WLMS) and one unit of Water Level Monitoring System (WLMS).

The city will also identify the areas for the monitoring stations of the high-tech equipment.

Under the MOA, the city will provide labor augmentation needed for the installation of the said monitoring station.

It will also be the caretaker of the said equipment and be responsible to report to DOST, through the Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC-Misamis Oriental), any damage that may arise to the equipment.

In January, the city was hit by the worst flooding since typhoon Sendong in 2011, which prompted authorities to propose for early weather warning sytem instruments, particularly in rivers and tributaries.

Col. Verner Monsanto, consultant of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department (CDRRMD), said the project could help mitigate damages during the occurrence of natural disaster.

For a fact, the city is surrounded by at least seven water basins namely the Iponan River water basin, Cagayan de Oro river basin, Bigaan water basin, Cugman river water basin, Umalag river water basin, Umalag water basin, Agusan river basin, and Tagpuange river water basin, thus making it vulnerable to heavy flooding.

Private hospitals hailed for offering health services to public during calamities

(JBD/SP)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Cagayan de Oro City Council committee on social services, and the committee on health, commended private hospitals for offering health services during Typhoon Sendong and for the partnership they have with the government in times of tragedies.

This, during discussions by members of the committee on health, sanitation and health insurance chaired by Councilor Maria Lourdes S. Gaane on the status of the PhilHealth claims of private hospitals in line with the “No Deposit Law.”

DELAY

In response to the query of Councilor Reuben R. Daba, chair and vice-chair of the committees respectively, regarding PhilHealth claims, Dr. Jesus Jardin, representative of Philippine Hospitals Association, informed the committee that the delay of PhilHealth claim processing is a national sentiment of private hospitals.

He cited that a hospital in Cabanatuan with a 600-bed capacity has a collectible of more than P130 million from PhilHealth while Capitol University Medical Center (CUMC) still has to collect more than P35 million from PhilHealth.

Marlon Arrabaca of PhilHealth-10 explained that one of the reasons for the delay, which started in May 2016, is the lack of manpower.

He said when the office shifted to case rates, filing of claims was made easier to the hospitals.

In Cagayan de Oro, PhilHealth office is processing an average of 500 claims per week or 2,000 claims per month, Arrabaca explained.
