Agriculture Chief Advocates Smart Investments and High-Return Projects

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is shifting its focus toward projects that offer strong and sustainable returns as part of its multiyear budget strategy.

During a recent two-day budget planning session, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. emphasized the importance of strategically allocating limited resources. He stressed that priority would be given to projects with an internal rate of return of 12 to 14 percent annually or a payback period of no more than seven years to ensure both profitability and bankability.

Kaya Iloilo sweeps Group B in Copa '21

MANILA – Kaya Iloilo pipped Mendiola with a 6-0 beating on Wednesday night to complete a sweep of Group B action in the Copa Paulino Alcantara at the PFF National Training Centre in Carmona.

A Jovin Bedic brace in the first half set the tone for the inaugural tournament champ even as the club netted three goals in each of the two halves to seal the top seed in its group ahead of the semifinals next week.

Bedic capitalized on an erroneous Mendiola attempt to keep the ball out of his reach and quickly raced inside the penalty box to open the scoring for Kaya Iloilo in the 11th minute.

No bitterness, just big dreams

MANILA, Philippines — Coming from a broken family did not make Antonio Santos bitter about life. In fact, he was even challenged to study harder and pursue his dreams of overcoming poverty and all the pains and sufferings that go with it.

When his parents parted ways, he and his two older sisters were left with only their mother, a utility worker, to feed and send them to school in Aroroy, Masbate. But despite their financial difficulties, Santos and one of his sisters were able to finish college, Yet, he could not find a good paying job. He was initially employed as a data encoder. Only when he learned about TESDA and took one of its short-term programs in ICT that life turned around for Santos.

After gaining his PC Operation NC II qualifications from TESDA, Santos was promoted to computer operator 1 at the Municipality of Aroroy accounting department. At the same time, he together with other talented young professionals in the LGU established the Aroroy Municipal College (AMC) to cater to the technical-vocational training needs of many young people in the communities.

He was responsible for the overall operation of the municipal college and coordinates with TESDA on program registration and continuing accreditation. He also takes care of the acquisition of tools and equipment and provision of training assistance and scholarships.

Despite his busy work schedule, Antonio Santos still finds time to share his technical skills with young people, who like him, are interested in trade skills. He is a part-time instructor in Computer Hardware Servicing at the Masbate Polytechnic School in Baleno town.

‘’I regret having learned late about TESDA and its programs. Had I known earlier, I should not have wasted time finishing college as a self-supporting student.

Many times then, I have to quit school to earn money for my tuition fees. If I had trades skills then, I would have had a better paying job and can easily support my college education,’’ recalls the former high school scholar at the Andres Soriano Junior Memorial School.

Now 30, Santos’ trade qualifications won for him the regional title of Idol ng TESDA 2011, wage-employed category for the Bicol Region. He also has four trade qualifications over and above his college degree, BS in Computer Science from Dynamic Computer Centrum,

The TESDA issued national certificates that Antonio Santos acquired have opened a lot of opportunities to improve his life and fulfill his dreams of altering the fate of other individuals.
