Wars of ancient history were about possessions, territory, power, control, family, betrayal, lover's quarrel, politics and sometimes religion.

But we are in the Modern era and supposedly more educated and enlightened .

Think about this. Don't just brush off these questions.

  • Why is RELIGION still involved in WARS? Isn't religion supposed to be about PEACE?
  • Ask yourself; What religion always campaign to have its religious laws be accepted as government laws, always involved in wars and consistently causing WARS, yet insists that it's a religion of peace?

WHY??

There are only two kinds of people who teach tolerance:
  1. The Bullies. They want you to tolerate them so they can continue to maliciously deprive you. Do not believe these bullies teaching tolerance, saying that it’s the path to prevent hatred and prejudice.
  2. The victims who are waiting for the right moment to retaliate. They can’t win yet, so they tolerate.

Tobacco smoke contains over 7,000 chemical compounds

By Claro A. Lanipa (ALT/CAL/PIA9-Zamboanga del Sur)

PAGADIAN CITY (PIA) – Tobacco smoke contains over 7,000 chemical compounds. About half of them are found naturally in the tobacco leaf and the other half are created by chemical reaction when tobacco is burned, a Department of Health IX (DOH-9) official said.

In a media forum held at a local hotel here on Friday, Ms. Teresita Dela Cruz, focal person, Tobacco Control Division of DOH-9 disclosed that of the 7000 chemical substances, 70 of them are known cancer-causing agents and more than 200 are toxic.

Most common smoke-caused diseases are cancer, chronic diseases such as stroke, coronary heart disease, aortic aneurysm, atherosclerotic peripheral vascular disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease among others, Dela Cruz said.

The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) conducted in 2015 revealed that overall tobacco user is composed of 23.8 percent or 16.6 million adult current smokers (15 years old and older), 41.9 percent of them are men and 5.8 percent are women; as compared to 2009 survey at 28.3 percent overall users with 47.75 percent Filipino male and 9.0 percent are female.

“In the 2015 survey, there is a significant decrease of tobacco users recorded which was attributed to the increase in taxes on all tobacco products,” Dela Cruz underscored.

On the other hand, 76.7 percent of current smokers plan to or thinking about quitting, while 4.0 percent of those who smoke in the past months successfully quit. About 56.5 percent of smokers who visited a healthcare provider in the past 12 months were advised to quit smoking, according to Dela Cruz.

Meanwhile, President Rodrigo R. Duterte signed Executive Order (EO) No 26 last May 16 declaring a smoking ban in all public places nationwide. This also includes public conveyances such as elevators, airplanes, ships, jeepneys, buses, trains, tricycles, taxicabs and other similar vehicles.

“We are very fortunate that our school is one of the beneficiaries of their program. It surely redound to the benefit not only of the teachers but also our students. We thank them for having a big heart for our school,” she added.

“With the active support and cooperation of ZAMSURECO-1, we have fulfilled the callings of the Department of Education: ‘Isang DepEd, Isang Pamayanan, Isang Bayanihan para sa Handa at Ligtas na Paaralan,’” Elsa Claros, principal of Bagong Silang Elementary School, Barangay Balangasan said.

“The activity is an integral part of the Coop’s corporate social responsibility aimed at promoting electrical safety in educational institutions by means of securing the integrity of electrical connections of public school classrooms and environment,” Pingca said quoting General Manager/CEO Engr. ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Police Regional Office-9 (PRO-9) has declared that 60 percent of illegal drugs operations have been destroyed with the neutralization of 80 big-time drug dealers and more than 1,000 of their members across Zamboanga Peninsula.

“The remaining leaders couldn’t be located [here] in Zamboanga Peninsula. But we are going after them. We need to account [all of] them,” Chief Supt. Billy Beltran, PRO-9 director, said.

“We still have remaining 40 percent and we will not stop to run after them,” Chief Supt. Billy Beltran, PRO-9 director, told the Philippine News Agency. He said that 80 of the 136 criminal gang leaders into illegal drug trade in the region had been neutralized.

“The remaining leaders couldn’t be located [here] in Zamboanga Peninsula. But we are going after them. We need to account [all of] them,” Beltran added.

The surrender of 58,163 drug users and peddlers have helped the police to effectively neutralize the drug operations region, he said.

“Their revelations helped us in determining their [drug dealers] operations,” he said. Region 9 is one of the regions that recorded the highest number of drug surrenderers in the country.

Sr. Supt. Noel Flores, chief of the Regional Investigation and Detective Management Division, said the drug dealers get supply from other areas since their was no illegal drug factory here in Region 9.

“Our mission is to destroy the drug apparatus. This is based on the pronouncement of President [Rodrigo] Duterte,” Flores said.

Lieutenant Colonel Virgilio Hamos, Jr., Army’s 53rd Infantry Battalion commander, identified them as Rey Anthony Dungog alias "Ka Mark," 19, and Alvin Ladra Calibo alias Ka Jason, 24, both belong to the Main Regional Guerrilla Unit of the NPA’s Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee.

He said the root causes of terrorism include violent extremism, poverty, ignorance, adventurism, lack of opportunities and lack of governance that hinders a vibrant economic environment.

“All the things that we do, we will not succeed without civilian support, kaya po kailangan namin kayo,” Garcia appealed to the participants.

SPO4 Ricky Cabatic of RPSB-9, PNP urged parents to protect the Filipino ASEAN youth against drugs especially shabu. “Protecting the youth assures them of a bright future in the ASEAN community,” he said.

Child welfare panel chair favors penalizing youth offenders

By Jauhn Etienne Villaruel (SunStar Philippines)

THE chairperson of the House committee on welfare of children has expressed her support for the proposal of the Duterte administration to lower the age of criminal responsibility.

Zamboanga del Sur Representative Divina Grace Yu, whose committee is tasked to overlook the needs, education and overall welfare of Filipino children, said she is inclined to agree on penalizing criminal offenders aged at least 12 years old.

"As for me, siguro makakabuti naman sa mga kabataan na i-lower ito kasi nga we have heard reports from the PNP that children aged 15 and below are being used by the syndicates to commit crimes to be able to escape responsibility," she said.

However, Yu clarified that her support for the bill is only her personal view and the decision of her committee will still prevail.

"Personally, I am in favor of lowering the age of criminal responsibility, but as I've said it's not my personal vote or view [that] would matter...I would bring the voice of the majority of the committee," Yu said.

The Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006, also known as Pangilinan law, raised the criminal age of responsibility from nine years old to 15 years old.

The bill currently pending on the House committee on justice wants to bring the criminal responsibility of child offenders back to nine years old.

A latest Pulse Asia survey showed 55 percent of Filipinos want to keep the current minimum age of criminal liability at 15 years old.

Last weekend, Malacañang said the stance of President Rodrigo Duterte in favor of lowering of the age of criminal liability "remains unchanged".

Cash-for-work program benefits 1,118 drug surrenderers in Region 9

(TPGJR/Darwin Wally T. Wee/PNA)

ZAMBOANGA CITY (PNA) - At least 1,118 drug users and pushers who surrendered to authorities across Zamboanga Peninsula in line with the government's war on drugs are benefiting from the cash-for-work program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

DSWD regional director Araceli Solamillo said yesterday the cash-for-work program is just one of the many initiatives they are implementing under the National Drug Rehabilitation Program, which was created following President Rodrigo Duterte's campaign against illegal drugs in the country.

“We in the DSWD always ensure that the affected families and individuals will be given the right support and intervention. Being the lead agency under Pillar III, there were community-based efforts that have already been done in the communities and we believe that this was proven effective,” Solamillo said in a written statement emailed to the Philippines News Agency.

Solamillo was referring to the three phases of the National Drug Rehabilitation Program.

Under the program, Pillar I is the creation of data for those who surrendered, Pillar II is the community-based rehabilitation and Pillar III is about livelihood assistance.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government, and the Department of Health are leading the first two pillars, respectively.

“We are one with the rest of the coordinating agencies under this National Drug Rehabilitation Program in our fight against illegal drugs and I believe that the synergized efforts are making a good start,” Solamillo said.

The activities in the cash-for-work include "clean and green," dredging and tree planting projects.

It said the drug surrenderers were paid PhP210 per day for 10 days of work, or a total of 2,100 per person.

As of Tuesday, the DSWD has already spent at least PHP2.3 million for the program in the region, Solamillo said.

Solamillo said that continuous efforts are being done in the municipal level in the provinces of Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur, and the cities of Isabela and Zamboanga.

Data from the DSWD here showed that they also provided medical and educational assistance to the drug surrenderers through its Expanded Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (EAICS) program for the entire region.

Parents of the “Pantawid Drug Surrenderers” have also undergone family development sessions. Psychosocial intervention was also provided to the children of those surrenderers.

As of Tuesday, the Police Regional Office-9 (PRO-9) here reported that there were 1,108 drug personalities who surrendered since the resumption of “Double Barrel Reloaded” in March.

It said the PRO-9 had conducted 22,518 house visitations under “TokHang (Toktok Hangyo)” and 33,312 under “TapHang (Tapok Hangyo)” operations.

“A total of 664 individuals personally appeared and surrendered to the different police stations in Zamboanga Peninsula for processing, 625 of whom are drug users and the rest drug pushers,” it said.

PRO-9 data showed that a total of 436 individuals were arrested -- 81 of them drug users and 355 drug pushers.

Eight also died during police operations, all covering the period from March 6 to May 2, the report said.

“The fight against illegal drugs is a shared responsibility of everyone. It is the fight of the people and the PNP [Philippine National Police] is the front liner in waging this people’s fight,” Chief Supt. Billy Beltran, PRO-9 director, said.

“As such, the PNP appeals to the public to continuously support the anti-illegal drugs campaign,” Beltran added.

Feature Story: Cops’ striker earns degree in criminology

(PNP-Caraga/PIA-Caraga)

In the graduation rites of St. Michael College of Caraga (SMCC) in Nasipit, Agusan del Norte on April 4, 2017, one of the graduates was proudly escorted by the members of the Agusan del Norte Public Safety Company. It is not common scenario during a graduation ceremony but to the Caraga Police, it is a shining moment, witnessing an all-around helper in the police camp, also known as striker, earned a diploma in Bachelor of Science in Criminology. The 22-year old striker, Jonard Ecot, successfully graduated through the support and assistance of Nasipit Police Officers serving as good samaritans.

Ecot who hails from Zamboanga del Sur, left his hometown at age of 14, to explore possibilities that will improve his status in life. He worked hard and travelled to some cities in Mindanao until he reached Surigao City, where he did some chores at a carenderia.

In 2011, cops assigned at RTR town in Agusan del Norte conducted checkpoints following reported incidents of theft perpetrated by a minor and was allegedly heading to Butuan City from Surigao City on board a bus. Police arrested the suspect, Jonard Ecot, who was just 15 years old. The police took custody of him and found out that the P2,000 he stole was actually his earnings because the owner did not pay him for the services he rendered.

He started to work for the policemen. He cooked, cleaned the camp, and did carpentry works. In return, the police officers sent and helped him finish high school by shouldering all the expenses including tuition fees, projects and allowances.

After high school, he was brought to Agusan del Norte Provincial Police Safety Company in Camagong, Nasipit, Agusan del Norte where the cops also supported his education to college. Most importantly, he was also accorded the same brotherly treatment while studying at SMCC.

Upon graduation, Jonard’s happiness and words of gratitude are incomparable. This was evidently noticed during the interview and he is excited to take the licensure examination in December 2017. He is looking forward to become a member of the Philippine National Police, the organization that inspired and transformed him to become a better, productive, and law-abiding individual.

Chief Supt Rolando Felix, Caraga Police Director, wishes Jonard Ecot the best of luck “This heartwarming story demonstrates that our policemen in Caraga are not only successful in carrying out their law enforcement mandate, but as well as in facilitating the aspirations of deserving persons,” said Felix.
