Wars of ancient history were about possessions, territory, power, control, family, betrayal, lover's quarrel, politics and sometimes religion.

But we are in the Modern era and supposedly more educated and enlightened .

Think about this. Don't just brush off these questions.

  • Why is RELIGION still involved in WARS? Isn't religion supposed to be about PEACE?
  • Ask yourself; What religion always campaign to have its religious laws be accepted as government laws, always involved in wars and consistently causing WARS, yet insists that it's a religion of peace?

WHY??

There are only two kinds of people who teach tolerance:
  1. The Bullies. They want you to tolerate them so they can continue to maliciously deprive you. Do not believe these bullies teaching tolerance, saying that it’s the path to prevent hatred and prejudice.
  2. The victims who are waiting for the right moment to retaliate. They can’t win yet, so they tolerate.

Mindanao Jesuit missionary close to being declared ‘Blessed’

By Christina Hermoso

The Vatican’s Congregation for the Causes of Saints has declared as valid the investigation into the sainthood cause for a 16th century Jesuit missionary who served in Mindanao.

The cause of martyrdom of Fr. Francesco Palliola was opened in January 2016 and was formally closed in September 2017 by Dipolog Bishop Severo Caermare at the Holy Rosary Cathedral in Dipolog City. The diocese submitted the result of its inquiry into Fr. Palliola’s life to the Vatican in November 2017.

“This is good news for the declaration of validity gives permission for the postulator of the said cause to start with the composition of the ‘positio,’” said Fr. Patrick Dalangin of the Diocese of Dipolog in a Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) News post.

The ‘positio’ is a biography and official position documenting the missionary’s life and works to prove his martyrdom.

“The cause convenes theological, historical and professional consultants. If majority of the theologians are in favor, the cause for martyrdom is passed on for examination by the member cardinals and bishops of the Congregation. An affirmative vote is needed from the cardinals and bishops before they present the cause to the Pope, who approves and authorizes the Congregation to draft a decree declaring the candidate a martyr. For a martyr, no miracle is required. Thus when the Pope approves the position declaring that the person was martyred for the faith, the title ‘Blessed’ is granted,” the CBCP said.

Born in May 1612, Palliola entered the Society of Jesus in 1637. He arrived in Manila in 1643, then in Dapitan the following year.

He mastered Visayan and later, learned the Subanen language to reach out to the lumad community of the Subanen. The missionary is credited as being the first European and Jesuit to do so.

In Dapitan, he went on missionary journeys to establish the settlements of Ilaya, Dipolog, Dicayo and Dohinob, Ponot and Quipit. When Josef Zanzini (aka José Sanchez) was assigned as his assistant, he left Zanzini in charge of the Visayan communities while he devoted himself to the lumads.

He also established ‘visitas’ as far south as the boundaries between present-day Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur.

While visiting Ponot to reconcile with a Subanon named Tampilo, who had turned away from the Christian faith, he was killed by Tampilo and his co-conspirators in the early morning of January 29, 1648. “While dying, he forgave his enemies and commended himself to Jesus and Mary. He died clutching the rosary and a crucifix he brought from Europe. The site of his martyrdom has been a place of pilgrimage over the years,” Dalangin said.

A street in the town of Manukan in Zamboanga del Norte was named after him.

Bishop Caermare calls on the faithful “to pray for a prompt declaration of martyrdom of Fr. Palliola and his beatification as he hopes for the country to have its third saint, and the first from Mindanao.

DepEd: 22-million volunteers mobilized in ‘Brigada Eskwela’

By Merlina Hernando-Malipot

The Department of Education (DepEd) announced that 22-million volunteers were mobilized in this year’s conduct of the “Brigada Eskwela”– which is almost twice as last year’s 12 million.

Education Undersecretary for Legislative Affairs, External Partnerships, and School Sports Tonisito M. C. Umali, Esq., made this announcement during the National Brigada Eskwela Awards held at Zamboanga del Norte Provincial Convention and Sports Center in November.

“Compared to 2016, we see a steady and impressive growth in the total resources generated,” Umali said, emphasizing the almost “P4.7 billion worth of resources generated by the program in 2018 alone.”

DepEd has been conducting “Brigada Eskwela” every year to prepare public school facilities for the opening of classes for the school year in June. Also known as the National Schools Maintenance Week, the “Brigada Eskwela” is an annual cleanup effort initiated by the DepEd.

The activity also aims to bring together all education stakeholders to participate and contribute their time, effort and resources to prepare public school facilities for the opening of the school year in June.

With this year’s theme, “Pagkakaisa Para sa Handa, Ligtas at Matatag na Paaralan Tungo sa Magandang Kinabukasan,” the “Brigada Eskwela” continues to mobilize the community and generate stakeholder support to make classrooms and facilities ready for school opening, toward the “betterment of the learning conditions of the Filipino learners.”

Best implementers

Meanwhile, Education Secretary Leonor Briones lauded 131 elementary and secondary schools that were recognized as the best implementers of the “Brigada Eskwela” from various regions nationwide.

“If you are a multi-awarded school in Brigada Eskwela, therefore, it says something about your school,” said Briones during the awarding in November. “I commend you for accumulating such award, for being self-reliant, and for working with the LGUs, churches and other civil society groups,” she added.

Furthermore, Briones underscored the importance of “Brigada Eskwela” in uniting DepEd’s partners and stakeholders in the pursuit of quality, accessible, relevant and liberating basic education for the Filipino learners.

“It’s a statement that whatever our differences are, we are here in this hall, we come from different political persuasions from the different regions, from different religious beliefs, but we are one with the belief that education is the most important legacy that we can give to our children,” Briones said.

A total of 17 schools – which have sustained their achievements for three consecutive years – received distinction as Hall of Famers, while 29 were awarded as Brigada Eskwela Plus Most Sustained Schools during the ceremonies.

Special awards were also granted to Caraga region for the highest percentage of increase in volunteer turnout, as well as to Region 4-A (Calabarzon) for obtaining the highest percentage of increase in resources generated.

Three regional and 18 division Brigada Eskwela coordinators/partnership focal persons were further bestowed with leadership awards. Meanwhile, 17 local government officials from all over the county also received the Gawad Ka-Brigada.

Ombudsman investigators discovered that the vehicle procured by Balais was the same one he sold to Eduardo Ayunting, owner of Oro Cars Display Center, for only P500,000 under a deed of sale dated November 26, 2010.

However, in the end, Balais was charged with only falsification instead of graft before the Sandiganbayan.

ZaNorte youths urged to play key role in nation-building

(PR)

MANILA — Former Special Assistant to the President Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go told around 4,000 youth leaders in Zamboanga Del Norte to focus on their responsibilities to their community and reminded them that it is every Filipino’s duty to serve our country.

“Alam ko na sa edad n'yo ngayon, prayoridad ninyo ang inyong mga assignments, mga exams o quizzes, mga kaibigan at mga kasintahan,” Go told the participants during the recent provincial youth summit dubbed "Bangon, Bagong Kabataan".

“Pero huwag din sana nating kalimutang magbigay ng pokus sa ating responsibilidad sa Inang Bayan,” he added.

Go said one of his reasons for running for senator is to be able to continue helping the youth and prepare them to become leaders of the country.

"Isa sa mga kadahilanan sa pagtakbo ko bilang Senador ay upang matulungan ko kayong mga kabataan at maihanda kayo kapag kayo na ang nagpatakbo ng ating bansa,” he said.

Go, who is gunning for a Senate seat in the 2019 elections, said part of his legislative agenda is to empower the youth to become productive citizens and keep them away from illegal drugs, corruption, and criminality.

He said he plans to institutionalize youth programs that will provide sports development centers in every city and municipality.

“These centers will offer free mentorship and training to the youth to instill in them values of discipline, sportsmanship and hardwork.”

Go is also advocating for the review of the Juvenile Justice Law to protect minors from being used by crime syndicates in their illegal activities.

He said he would push for the amendment of this law because “criminals have been using it as a loophole to force young Filipinos to commit crimes for them.”

In the same event, Go also emphasized his commitment to encourage his former colleagues in government to build more Malasakit Centers all over the country.

The Malasakit Center is a one-stop-shop program of President Rodrigo Duterte to hasten the delivery of medical services to those in need and give poor patients access to free medicine.

He committed to the residents of Zamboanga Del Norte that there will be a Malasakit Center in their province soon in order to provide them free access to quality healthcare.

“Ang aming plano ay sa loob ng tatlong buwan ay malalagyan na dito ng Malasakit Center. Pipili lang muna kami ng government hospital dito sa Zamboanga Del Norte na pwede malagyan ng Malasakit Center,” he said, adding that he plans to institutionalize this into a law to make sure that the program continues even after the term of President Duterte.

“Kung kaawaan ako ng Diyos at swertehin na dalhin ng tadhana sa Senado akin itong isasabatas at i-institutionalize para magpatuloy pa rin ang programang Malasakit Center,” Go added.

Go said like President Duterte, his main purpose in serving the public is to provide a better future for the next generation.

Ranking eighth in the latest nationwide senatorial survey, Go vowed to continue pushing for the programs of the President to sustain the gains felt by Filipinos and to serve the public in every way he can.

“Andito po ako para tumulong sa inyo at maprotektahan ang ating kabataan. Ang tangi kong bisyo ay magserbisyo sa kapwa kong Pilipino. Sa suporta po ninyo, mas marami po tayong matutulungan,” Go said.

By ANTONIO P. RIMANDO

DIPOLOG CITY: Cherilyn Napigkit Opulentisima was feted recently by the Dipolog City government for winning the silver medal in the vocal solo category of the 2018 World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA)

The 23-year-old Opulentisima participated in eight categories, namely opera, broadway, pop, country, gospel, jazz, world and open in the WCOPA Long Beach, California last July.

Opulentisima finished her Bachelor of Music from Silliman University (SU) in Dumaguete City, which is less than two hours interisland vessel ride from this coastal city.

After graduating, SU employed Opulentisima as part-time instructor, enabling her to take her master’s degree in music at the Negros Oriental Christian institution. She took her secondary education at Dipolog’s Saint Mary’s Academy.

Labason folks avail of various gov’t services in Serbisyo Caravan

By Dominic I. Sanchez

ZAMBOANGA CITY (PIA)-- Hundreds of residents in the town of Labason, Zamboanga del Norte availed of the one-day government information and outreach services during the Serbisyo Caravan held in the municipality on Monday (November 26).

While medical services were being provided by local health officials and medics from the Western Mindanao Command’s (WESMINCOM) 1st Infantry Division in the town’s covered court, representatives from other government agencies talked with the residents on important issues such as anti-illegal recruitment and violent extremism, anti-illegal drugs, HIV-AIDS awareness, disaster preparedness, benefits of being a member of the Social Security System (SSS), and income through online jobs.

The municipality was chosen for its geographical location where many government offices and services are not easily accessible to the residents. This contributes to limited awareness on programs and services beneficial to them.

Offices such as the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Department of Science and Technology (DOST) introduced livelihood trainings and product development for the mostly farmer and fisherfolk population. Other agencies put up consultation booths to interact with residents regarding the needs that can be addressed by said office.

The Serbisyo Caravan is a yearly project of the Mindanao Communicators Network (MCN), an organization composed of information officers from different government offices. It aims to bring information and services to the rural areas to benefit the poor residents. (ALT/DIS/PIA9-Zamboanga City)
