Zamboanga City - Archived News

Wars of ancient history were about possessions, territory, power, control, family, betrayal, lover's quarrel, politics and sometimes religion.

But we are in the Modern era and supposedly more educated and enlightened .

Think about this. Don't just brush off these questions.

  • Why is RELIGION still involved in WARS? Isn't religion supposed to be about PEACE?
  • Ask yourself; What religion always campaign to have its religious laws be accepted as government laws, always involved in wars and consistently causing WARS, yet insists that it's a religion of peace?

WHY??

There are only two kinds of people who teach tolerance:
  1. The Bullies. They want you to tolerate them so they can continue to maliciously deprive you. Do not believe these bullies teaching tolerance, saying that it’s the path to prevent hatred and prejudice.
  2. The victims who are waiting for the right moment to retaliate. They can’t win yet, so they tolerate.

City eyes improved mass transit

By Jasmine Mohammadsali

A mass public transportation project is currently under works to improve daily commute in the city’s thoroughfares, the local government announced Monday, October 22.

Assistant City Administrator Cesar Raz presented to members of the local media the proposed mass transit project which will introduce the use of some 15 buses as public transport for residents and visitors and its respective routes in the city’s streets.

According to Raz, the project is based from the city’s comprehensive land use plan (CLUP) and intends to provide a comfortable and reliable mode of public transport. It also hopes to encourage residents to shift from using private vehicles to modern public transportation in order to decrease the volume of vehicles in public thoroughfares.

“This is still part of our proposed mass transit under the CLUP...this was studied a long time ago,” Raz said, citing the survey on public transport mode characteristics conducted by the Palafox planning team in 2016.

The Zamboanga City Integrated Bus Terminal (IBT) will be the starting and ending point for the buses which will ply a looping route along the MCLL highway towards city proper, with designated bus stops at Putik (Lunzuran entrance) Yubenco City Mall, Guiwan Intersection (Sampaguita), Guiwan (San Bernardino Bridge), Sta. Cruz intersection, Veterans – Don Alfaro intersection, Corcuerra Street (Port), WMSU, San Jose and Baliwasan intersection, Airport, Sta. Maria – Canelar intersection, and Camins, and back to MCLL highway to IBT.

Currently, the local government is working on completing its Local Public Transport Route Plan (LPTRP) which is a requirement for the issuance of a franchise by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

“We will present it to the transport groups,” Raz said, adding that the local government is in constant dialogue with all transport groups in order to be able to provide the best possible service to commuters in line with the city’s efforts towards modernization.

The proposed bus fare is P18. With the higher fare price, Raz said the buses will not be directly competing with existing transportation franchise like jeepneys and tricycles.

“We will always be higher than the jeepney fare and the tricycle fare because we based it on the matrix, it must always be higher,” he said.

Raz added that the buses will provide commuters with additional transportation options.

“Commuters have this right of choice,” he said.

By Teofilo Garcia, Jr (PNA)

ZAMBOANGA CITY--The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has purchased 200 new units of luggage carts for the use of the passengers at the Zamboanga International Airport (ZIA).

The purchase came after the request of first district Rep. Celso Lobregat to the CAAP central office and Department of Transportation (DOTr) Sec. Arthur Tugade.

The 200 new units of luggage carts arrived here Monday from Manila, and were received by ZIA Manager Antonio Alfonso, Tourism Regional Director Myra Paz Valderrosa-Abubakar, and Lobregat.

“This is an answered prayer, we have been longing for this and I am glad this request was acted by CAAP. I am thankful to Secretary Tugade for granting this request and also the massive improvements being done at present in our dilapidated airport and runway while awaiting the future transfer of our airport, which is in the process,” Lobregat said.

Alfonso said the 50 units luggage carts, which was borrowed from Cagayan de Oro in time for the Fiesta Pilar and Philippine Councilor League convention last month, will be returned soon.

Cagayan de Oro temporarily provided the luggage carts through the request of Lobregat and Alfonso as an immediate remedy in resolving the shortage of carts at the local airport.

Abubakar said the arrival of the new luggage carts would in some way help in the tourism aspect of this city, adding it will provide comfort to arriving tourists since they will no longer carry their luggage.

Zamboanga City pushes for P2B 5-year food security plan

(Politiko Mindanao)

Zamboanga City, along with the stakeholders, is eyeing a P2-billion 5-year food security plan following the rice crisis that hit the city and nearby provinces recently, the local government said.

Some 200 participated in the first ever Food Security Stakeholders Consultation Friday, October 19, in coming out with an action plan that aims at improving agricultural and fishery production in the city, said the City Agriculturist Office (CAO).

“Top on the agenda was to increase rice production by addressing the shrinking agricultural land area due to unabated land conversion, aging farmer population and obsolete farming technology and practices,” it said.

According to the CAO, the rice sector has proposed the procurement of 50 bags of registered seeds for 2019, organic fertilizer worth P10 million and procurement of 24 bags of upland rice seeds.

The livestock and poultry sector has recommended the establishment of stock farms as source of quality based stocks amounting to P65 million, another P65 million as support to “halal” or organic production, and P10 million support to the “asao lechon” in the city.

The corn sector, on the other hand, requested for farm equipment such as truck, cassava grater, drilling rig, corn mills, disposal chicken dung, mechanical dyer, solar dyer, solar power and the establishment of corn village type production plant and market matching.

The fish sector has suggested strategies to avert the decrease in the fish supply.

Zamboanga City declared previously a state of calamity after the prices of rice significantly increased to as much as P70 per kilo.

City Council passes P4.1-B budget for 2019

By R.G ANTONET A. GO

The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Zamboanga has passed on third and final reading the city’s P4.1-billion Annual Executive Budget during the Council’s regular session yesterday.

The appropriation ordinance was passed amid opposition raised by minority councilors on some of the city government’s major purchases.

The city’s proposed budget for 2019 is P4,196,851,213.78. This represents an increase of P400-million compared to last year’s budget of P3.7 billion.

Majority councilors rallied behind the ordinance in three votations which led to the approval of the proposed measure.

Ten administration councilors voted in favor. These are Councilors Rommel Agan, Teodyver Arquiza, Bong Atilano, Rodolfo Bayot, Jihan Edding, Juan Climaco Elago, Tungkuh Hanapi, Cesar Jimenez, Josephine Pareja, and Jimmy Villaflores.

Those who abstained from votation are minority councilors Rudy Lim, Joselito Macrohon, Miguel Alavar III, Boday Cabato, BG Guingona, Lilibeth Nuño, Jerry Perez, and Cary John Pioc.

Minority Councilor Rudy Lim dubbed the executive budget as “whimsical.”

Lim opposed the purchase of a metro bus without a feasibility study and the huge allocations for a mobile kitchen and a portable toilet and a drone reportedly costing from P500,000 to P1-million.

Lim said that there was nothing substantial in the budget for the purchase of towing trucks, speed guns, and the construction of a parking building.

There was also reportedly no allocation for agriculture.

Councilor Rommel Agan, Chairman of the Committee on Appropriation, accused minority councilors of not attending the public hearing on the ordinance.

“Now I’m Committee on Appropriation Chairman I don’t want man railroad poreso antes na plenary ya chene public hearing nuay media consejal ya abuya,” Agan stressed.

The appropriation ordinance will be forwarded to Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar for signing and will be submitted to the Department of Budget and Management for review and approval.

Zamboanga City sets 2nd ‘Basura Run’

By Teofilo Garcia, Jr

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR) is spearheading on Sunday the second “Basura Run”, an advocacy on cleanliness and fitness.

Rodrigo Pagotaisidro, public service officer of OCENR, said the activity will kick off at 5 a.m. from the Guiwan Barangay Hall to Barangay Tugbungan. The registration fee is PHP50 for each participant.

Pagotaisidro said the participants are required to bring empty sacks or any container, with their name written on it, for the collection of plastic and styrofoam wastes that they can find in the course of the run.

He said the activity aims to instill public awareness on the importance of throwing garbage in proper bins to maintain cleanliness and to prevent flooding. It is anchored on the theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution, If You Can’t Re-Use It, Refuse It.”

The first “Basura Run” was held on June 25, which started at the RT Lim Blvd. in Barangay San Jose-Cawa-Cawa and ended at the Paseo del Mar in Barangay Zone 4.

Meanwhile, Pagotaisidro said they are working to strengthen the capacities of the barangays in line with sanitation, particularly solid waste management.

He said they are continuously conducting assemblies in the barangays, pursuant to the implementation of City Ordinance 176, for the reorganization of ecological solid waste management committees and the development of the barangay solid waste management plan.

The official explained that the barangays will don bigger roles in waste management, particularly in identifying their respective purok or zone where to start segregation and the creation of an eco-volunteer group that will handle the solid waste management program.

He said garbage trucks will be provided to the barangays, which will then handle their own garbage collection, segregation, and disposal at the sanitary landfill. (PNA)

Zambo expo 2018 earns P25-M in sales

By Teofilo Garcia, Jr (PNA)

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Tuesday hailed the 2018 Zamboanga Peninsula Exposition (ZAMPEX) as a big success as it recorded PHP25.4 million in sales, twice higher since its inception in 2014.

Dr. Sitti Amina Jain, DTI-9 director, said this year’s ZAMPEX held from October 8 to 11 was participated in by 102 exhibitors, with 93 from Zamboanga Peninsula, while the remaining nine are from Davao City, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), notably, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi, and from ASEAN-member country, Indonesia.

Grouped according to province or city, Jain said the exhibitors from this city generated the highest sales at PHP10.4 million representing 41 percent of the total sales of ZAMPEX 2018.

Second is Zamboanga del Norte with PHP7.2 million and third, and Zamboanga del Sur with PHP6.47 million.

The products sold were categorized into two – food and non-food products, with higher sales generated by non-food products, totaling to PHP15.041 million, while food products generated PHP10.391 million- in sales.

The PHP25.4 million sales surpassed by PHP10 million this year’s ZAMPEX target of PHP15 million in sales convincing Jain that “it is ripe to go out of the region and bring the fair to a bigger, more mainstream market.”

“It’s high time for our local products to conquer bigger markets. Next year, we will be bringing ZAMPEX to Manila. After this success, we need to buckle down in preparation for next year. It’s much challenging to bring this to Manila but we are very confident it will be worth the challenges to bring our best products to Manila,” Jain said.

She said the first edition of ZAMPEX in 2014 has generated total sales of PHP10.7 million, which was eclipsed in 2015 with PHP12.5 million. In 2016, the sales dipped to PHP11.46 million, but improved to PHP11.9 million in 2017.

Held every October, ZAMPEX is an annual activity of DTI-9 in line with the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival. It is one of the biggest marketing platforms for micro, small, and medium entrepreneurs (MSMEs) in the region.

ZAMPEX aims to promote locally-made products of MSMEs in the region, create or reinforce visibility and raise the awareness and interest on their products, and establish linkages between producers and buyers and establish partnerships among distributors and suppliers through business matching.
