Zamboanga City - Archived News

Wars of ancient history were about possessions, territory, power, control, family, betrayal, lover's quarrel, politics and sometimes religion.

But we are in the Modern era and supposedly more educated and enlightened .

Think about this. Don't just brush off these questions.

  • Why is RELIGION still involved in WARS? Isn't religion supposed to be about PEACE?
  • Ask yourself; What religion always campaign to have its religious laws be accepted as government laws, always involved in wars and consistently causing WARS, yet insists that it's a religion of peace?

WHY??

There are only two kinds of people who teach tolerance:
  1. The Bullies. They want you to tolerate them so they can continue to maliciously deprive you. Do not believe these bullies teaching tolerance, saying that it’s the path to prevent hatred and prejudice.
  2. The victims who are waiting for the right moment to retaliate. They can’t win yet, so they tolerate.

Zambo encapsulated in Ateneo art exhibit

(Daily Zamboanga Times)

How do we capture the spirit of Zamboanga? How do we pin down a city constantly evolving?

The Ateneo Center for Culture and the Arts invites the public to the opening of Zipcode 7000, an art exhibit by the Cabato family, one of Zamboanga’s established families, at 11am at the Gallery of the Peninsula and the Archipelago in Ateneo de Zamboanga University-Salvador campus in La Purisima on December 1st, 2015.

One of the activities lined up for this year’s Ateneo Fiesta celebration from November 30 to December 6, the exhibit is the Cabato family’s first creative collaboration to provide a personal response to the ortgeist (spirit of the place) of Zamboanga. Introspective and relatable, the works unravel more than just a city treasured for its iconic landmarks and beautiful landscapes. Like a commemorative diary, it gives light to one perspective of living in Zamboanga.

Although each member of the family stems from different fields of interest, the main thread that weaves all their works together is a common rootedness to their hometown, bringing in choice ingredients of what makes Zamboanga the family’s comfort zone. Cabato family patriarch Jun captures landscape photos of his favorite spots at the local golf resort. Nene experiments the unfamiliar blend of watercolor and paper quilling to create compelling and intricate reliefs. Rene merges clouds and water through his photographs on reflections. Mike lights up x-ray films redefining creative science. Ja fills the space with a kite installation amidst her paintings on endemic birds. Neil showcases his graphic designs inspired by iconic Zamboanga symbols. Regine shares insights of places in Zamboanga through her poetry. Lizette debuts one of her personal illustrations.

Also on display during the exhibit are supplementary products such as postcards and coloring books bearing the artworks that will be put up for sale.Proceeds from the sales will go to Ateneo’s Recovery and Assistance Program (RAP).

Gallery hours are from Monday to Friday, 9 to 6PM and Saturday, 8AM-12N. The exhibit will run until January 16, 2016.

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Nov. 9 (PNA) – The city government on Monday started the conduct of series of profiling activities to update the list of home-based internally displaced persons (IDPs) to ensure that all those affected by the 2013 siege will benefit from the Zamboanga City Roadmap to Recovery and Reconstruction (Z3R) plan.

City Social Welfare and Development Officer (CSWDO) Socorro Rojas said the home-based IDPs are families displaced by the 21-day September 2013 siege that are staying with relatives and friends and not in transitory shelters.

Rojas said the schedule and venues for the profiling are as follows: Nov. 9, 10 and 11, barangay halls of Sta. Barbara and Sta. Catalina; Nov. 12, 13 and 14, barangay halls of Mariki and Rio Hondo; and, Nov. 15, 16 and 17, barangay halls of Baliwasan and Tetuan.

Rojas said the conduct of the profiling is spearheaded by her office in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Youth of the Philippines’ Women, Inc. (UNYPHIL-Women).

Rojas said enumerators have been tasked to undertake profiling activities covering home-based IDPs.

She said all IDPs, whether staying in transitory sites or home-based, are entitled to humanitarian support under Philippine or international laws.

She said the support includes access to basic shelter, access to food and basic medical assistance.

She encouraged home-based IDPs to bring their tagging number and Pink Family Access Card or certification issued by her office and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

The last profiling activity was done in December 2014 where over 2,000 home-based IDPs were registered. The list is being cross-matched with the CSWDO records.

ICRC builds water system project in Zambo barangay

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Nov. 5 (PNA) -– The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has inaugurated on Thursday a community-based water supply system benefiting over 4,000 people including families displaced in the 21-day September 2013 siege in this city.

The water system was constructed in Barangay Taluksangay, 19 kilometers east of City Hall.

The project, supported by the ICRC, the village and city officials, is a long-term solution to the shortage of water in Barangay Taluksangay, which hosts about 900 people displaced by the September 2013 siege.

Alawi Asid said they don’t have to ride canoe anymore just to fetch water “because the water source is near” with the completion of the project.

Asid said their lives are better now and they no longer fight to get first in line since “we can easily get water.”

The family of Asid was displaced from Layag-Layag Island in Barangay Talon-Talon. They decided to settle in Barangay Taluksangay after the siege.

The ICRC said Thursday that clean water started flowing from nine communal tap stands in September, reaching a total of 4,000 people in Taluksangay transitory site, the nearby relocation site, and the host community.

The ICRC said that more people stand to benefit as the water system has the ability to cover additional localities in the barangay. Only half of the capacity of the water source has been used so far.

The water system project was built by 80 displaced people who were employed in a cash-for-work program, with the ICRC providing materials and technical expertise.

It was recently handed over to the Taluksangay Water and Sanitation Association (TAWASA), which was formed with ICRC support, and which will operate and maintain the project.

To help the TAWASA sustain the project, the ICRC gave them tools, spare parts and office supplies.

“The ICRC went beyond the engineering works, focusing also on community organization and empowerment. The community took ownership of the project, and the system is self-sustaining, making it able to last for years to come,” ICRC-Zamboanga head Marcel Goyeneche said.

Hadji Abdurahaman Nuño, Taluksangay barangay chairman, and her wife, second district Rep. Lilia, have expressed “our sincere gratitude to the ICRC” for the implementation of the water system project.

Rep. Nuño said the water system is a “very laudable project” since it will not only benefit the siege-displaced families but to include the national high school and the other residents of Taluksangay.

She said the barangay has more or less 11,000 residents and 520 students enrolled at the Taluksangay National High School.

Zambo supports DOH’s HI-5 program

By Dominic I. Sanchez (FPG/DIS/PIA9-Zamboanga City)

ZAMBOANGA CITY (PIA) –Barangay officials, health workers and other stakeholders have attended a summit on the Department of Health’s (DOH) High Impact 5, or HI-5 program held Tuesday at the Astoria Regency in Pasonanca this city.

Speaking in the opening program, Mayor Beng Climaco-Salazar underscored the importance of being health conscious and of the HI-5 itself in improving the health situation of all the residents here, as she emphasized the roles of the barangay officials and the health workers in realizing this goal.

“You are at the frontline in delivering these important health services to the community, and your work is very important,” Mayor Climaco-Salazar said.

She said the HI-5 focuses on five areas such as maternal health care, infant care, child protection, HIV/AIDS and improving the service delivery network.

On the other hand, Rep. Lilia Nuño expressed her support to the strategy, citing her own contributions to address health issues in the communities. “We will be distributing health kits to help the barangay health workers in both districts,” she said.

DOH-9 officer-in-charge Dr. Ruby Constantino explained to the participants that the national government had launched HI-5 to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of universal health care, with special emphasis on the poor and vulnerable groups. She also lauded the efforts of the local government units at improving the delivery of health services in their respective communities.

HI-5 was launched in Manila last June 8 followed by similar launching activities in several other cities and provinces nationwide.

In its website, the DOH says “the HI-5 is a strategy which aims to produce the greatest improvements in health outcomes and the highest impact on the priority, vulnerable population, with focus on five critical interventions prioritizing the poor, providing tangible outputs which are ‘felt’ within a breakthrough period of 15 months through synchronized nationwide implementation of activities. Its main objectives are to intensify regional operations and converge in priority poverty program areas and to implement model plans on the 5 key high impact interventions.”
