DAGUPAN CITY, June 25 (PIA) – A 46-year old retro-runner in Pangasinan will attempt to break the Guinness world record for 100-meter backward running at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center in Lingayen town on July 25.

Alfonso Bigay, a family man and native of Lingayen town, is positive to beat the Guinness world record of 13.6 seconds for 100-meter backward running shared by Roland Wegner of Germany and Ferdie Ato Adoboe of Ghana.

Bigay, who is a track runner who has started running backwards since 1991, is a new Filipino entry for the Guinness world record for 100-meter retro-running.

“In order for me to get the record, I do short run, temporary time-trial and cross trainings in preparation for the bid,” he said during a media conference held on Wednesday at Lenox Hotel in Dagupan City.

Bigay said that he already hit a 13.2 seconds in 100-meter backward running during his present trainings.

“I can run faster when I do retro-running because in forward running I can only hit 14 seconds,” he said.

Janice Hidalgo, liaison officer of Bigay to Guinness world record, said the management for the Guinness world record gave them a go signal last June 2 for Bigay to beat the record in July.

Hidalgo disclosed that Bigay will be having his official medical examination, weighing-in and other requirements on July 14 that will be administered by a government physician.
