QUEZON CITY, 15 December (PIA) – The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) further boosted its K9-unit.

This after PDEA recently held a one month K9-unit basic handler’s course with 16 participants from the members of the PDEA Class ‘SangKalasag.’

PDEA Director General Undersecretary Arturo G. Cacdac Jr. encouraged the graduates to continue enhancing their skills to become experts in their field of specialization as drug busters.

Cacdac explained that the Canine Handler’s Course will guide the narcotic dog handlers to properly perform their duties and responsibilities, adding that this one way of fulfilling the agency’s mandate as the lead agency in the campaign against illegal drugs.

The course enabled the participants to appreciate and understand how a K9-unit team work effectively and efficiently as front liners during anti-drug operations and enhance handlers’ connection with their respective working narcotic dogs as future K-9 team supervisors.

At present, the PDEA K9-unit has 71 strong narcotic dog handlers in 17 regions, handling narcotic dog breeds like Belgian Malinois, Jack Russell Terrier, Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd and Golden Retriever.
