Muslims in Zamboanga city and all over the world are preparing for Eid al’ Fitr, the culmination of the Holy season of Ramadhan which will be celebrated either today or tomorrow.

The Ulama Council of Zamboanga Peninsula held the traditional moon-sighting ceremony yesterday afternoon to determine the exact day for the Eid al’ Fitr celebration.

In the city, designated sighters wait along the coastline of RT Lim Boulevard to catch a glimpse of a sliver of the moon during the 30th day from the start of the Ramadhan period.

A separate moon-sighting activity was held at Barangay Patalon by Sheikh Yasser Akiran, the vice-chairman of the Committee on Moon Sighting.

Members of the Supreme Council convene around sunset to gather information from counterparts nationwide and from other ASEAN countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia to determine if the moon had been sighted.

As of presstime, there was no word yet on whether the moon was sighted in Zamboanga and thus, no confirmation if Eid l’Fitr will be celebrated today.

Muslims in the city have been preparing for the celebration of Eid al’ Fitr since early this week.

The special day starts with prayers at all the city’s mosques and the traditional visit to family members and relatives.
