Mindoro governor cancels party, donate P1M to 'Sendong' victims

by Juancho Mahusay

CALAPAN CITY, Philippines – Oriental Mindoro Governor Alfonso Umali cancelled the annual Governor's Ball today, and instead donated P1 million for the victims of Tropical Storm Sendong in Mindanao.

Umali said they decided to divert a total of P1 million funds of the provincial government to help the families of the more than 1,000 people who died on the recent devastation in Mindanao.

“We will no longer do partying here while there are people in other places who are mourning,” said Umali.

The amount will be equally apportioned as financial assistance to the provincial governments of Misamis Oriental and Lanao Del Norte.

Umali said he is still looking for other donors as additional support of the province to all typhoon victims.

Calapeños receive free anti-flu vaccine

by Louie T. Cueto

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro, Dec. 28 (PIA) -- About 1,000 Calapeños, including city officials and employees, received free anti-flu vaccine this month from the city health and sanitation department (CHSD). The vaccination program aimed to help Calapeños become safe from flu which is rampant this month due to the cold weather condition, according to City Health Officer Basilisa M. Llanto. Llanto said that anti-flu vaccine costs about P1, 500 when bought from drugstores and hospitals. The city government thus wanted Calapeños, especially the marginalized folks, to avail of the free vaccine, she added. The vaccines were given free by the Department of Health to the city government as a health protection support program to Calapeños. The vaccine is effective for a year upon injection.
