Mactan airport to have second runway costing PHP6B by 2020

CEBU CITY, Aug. 3 (PNA) -- The Mactan Cebu International airport (MCIA), the country’s busiest airport outside Manila, is poised to have a second runway by 2020, an official said.
Engr. Nidel Paul Villarete, MCIA general manager, said the second runway will cost about PHP6 billion.
GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corp. (GMCAC), the consrtitum that won the bid for the PHP17.5-billion MCIA expansion project, is building the MCIA Terminal 2 (T2).
Mactan airport T2 is expected to increase the airport’s capacity to 12.5 million passengers a year.
The from the existing terminal has a capacity of only 4.7 million but it already handled more than seven million passengers last year.
President Benigno C. Aquino III last month led the groundbreaking for the Mactan airport T2.
Villarete said the second runway project has been approved by the MCIA board, the airport’s governing body, but construction may start obly by 2018, the year Mactan airport T2 is expected to be completed.
He said the second runway may require an additional 38 to 80 hectares of land.
The project will first have a conceptual design, a financial and economic feasibility study and a detailed engineering design before it will be submitted for the approval of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), he said.
