THE closure of the runway of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) may be extended even if the asphalting overlay, which started last Sept. 1, is expected to be finished by Sept. 21. Dolorosa Yu, officer-in-charge of the airport ground operations division of the MCIA, said that there is a need to fix the facility’s center navigational lights, which were not covered by the 21-day rehabilitation of the runway. The repair prompted the removal of 80 lights in the middle of the runway so that these will not be covered by the asphalt. When the repair will be completed, the lights will be returned and that would entail additional working days.

It is expected that normal operations will be back by the first week of October. Meanwhile, over 800 meters of the 3.3-kilometer runway have already been worked on. Four contractors have been hired to rehabilitate the runway. Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority General Manager Steve Dicdican ordered the increase of asphalt load from 16 trucks to 20 trucks per contractor per day as the amount of asphalt to be poured for the runway repair.
