THE rehabilitation of the support of Metropolitan Cebu Water District’s (MCWD) pipeline under the old Mactan-Mandaue Bridge was completed on time.
Private contractor Jegma Construction and Development Corp. (JCDC) handled the project for P5.9 million. Jegma was able to finish it on time or within 120 days.
Engr. Roy Basar of MCWD Project Management Office said the project will soon be turned over to the water utility firm after a final inspection the other day.
- Thankful
In a statement sent to Sun.Star Cebu by MCWD Public Affairs Manager Charmaine Rodriguez-Kara, MCWD hopes the support will help allay fears that the pipe could fall during the ongoing repair of the Mandaue-Mactan Bridge.
“We are thankful that the pipe support repair was already completed and it did not cause any traffic or affect the ongoing bridge repair as earlier raised by some sectors,” read the MCWD statement.
Alma Jo Alonzo, Jegma Construction vice president, said it is their first time to do a pipe support rehabilitation and their biggest challenge was the procurement of materials since everything came from Manila suppliers and most of the materials had to be fabricated.
The project was started last April 1. It included the removal of the old pipe support, repair of its rusted surface, painting and rust-proofing of the pipe surface, and installation of new support, which was attached to the concrete sidewalk of the bridge, among others.
Alonzo said they focused on the implementation of the project and his men worked six days a week for more than eight hours daily to beat the Aug. 1 deadline.
- Capacity
Kara said MCWD’s pipeline supplies around 12,000 cubic meters of water to almost 17,000 households and commercial establishments in Lapu-Lapu City and adjacent Cordova town.
The MCWD water supply drives the economy of Mactan Island and provides jobs to thousands in Metro Cebu every day.
