Dietary supplement is a product that contains vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids, enzymes, and/or other ingredients intended to supplement the diet. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has special labeling requirements for dietary supplements and treats them as foods, not drugs.

Manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplements and dietary ingredients are prohibited from marketing products that are adulterated or misbranded. That means that these firms are responsible for evaluating the safety and labeling of their products before marketing to ensure that they meet all the requirements of DSHEA and FDA regulations.

Wars of ancient history were about possessions, territory, power, control, family, betrayal, lover's quarrel, politics and sometimes religion.

But we are in the Modern era and supposedly more educated and enlightened .

Think about this. Don't just brush off these questions.

  • Why is RELIGION still involved in WARS? Isn't religion supposed to be about PEACE?
  • Ask yourself; What religion always campaign to have its religious laws be accepted as government laws, always involved in wars and consistently causing WARS, yet insists that it's a religion of peace?

WHY??

There are only two kinds of people who teach tolerance:
  1. The Bullies. They want you to tolerate them so they can continue to maliciously deprive you. Do not believe these bullies teaching tolerance, saying that it’s the path to prevent hatred and prejudice.
  2. The victims who are waiting for the right moment to retaliate. They can’t win yet, so they tolerate.

Davao del Norte ready for disasters

TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte- Governor Rodolfo P. del Rosario said the Province of Davao del Norte is now safer and more disaster-resilient with the approval of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Plan of the province for 2012.

The PDRRM Council approved the disaster plan of the province during its regular meeting last May 10, 2012 presided by the governor.

Gov. del Rosario said the plan instituted the framework that would enable the province to prevent, prepare for, mitigate the impacts of, respond to, and recover from, a range of disasters that could adversely affect the communities.

The plan, which has a budgetary requirement of P61.2 million, include, among others, the establishment of the PDRRM operation center; purchase of a rescue armory vehicle and fiber boat; establishment of province-wide automatic early warning system; institutionalization of incident command systems from the province down to the barangay level; improvement and repair of roads and drainage systems; purchase of amphibious backhoe for desilting of river systems; and, provision of various assistance to disaster victims.

The governor expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Council, particularly to the sectoral committees for their effort in crafting the plan.

Yet, while he urged the members of the council to make the plan “a true and reliable instrument to reduce and manage risk”, he encouraged the communities to do their part in preparing for disasters, especially during normal periods.

“Risk reduction is an everyday concern for everyone,” del Rosario said.

Tourist destinations, summer promotions, and products of the province were showcased in the exhibit which will run up to May 22 at the mall’s activity center.

With the rainy season still weeks away, Governor Rodolfo P. del Rosario invited tourists to maximize their summer fun and have an experience of a lifetime in Davao del Norte.

The governor cited the endearing world-class beaches, pristine reefs, enchanting caves, cascading waterfalls, stunning mountain resorts, vast plantations, and rich cultural heritage as some of the great come-ons waiting for visitors to explore and enjoy.

Folks urged to be vigilant vs human trafficking

PANABO CITY, Davao del Norte- Community folks should be made aware of the menace of trafficking in persons (TIP) for them to get involved in foiling it, Social Welfare Regional Director Esther A. Versoza said.

Versoza recently made the call as the Regional Interagency Council against Trafficking Integrated Action Network (RIACTION) XI pushed the alliance to the barangay level to widen links of agencies tasked to curb human trafficking.

In a seminar in Panabo City, Versoza said that most recruitment were done at the community level where traffickers were noted to have been offering high salaries and juicy offers which victims unwittingly took prompted by hopes to help their families.

“Let us be vigilant and let us cooperate,” Versoza told participants who were mostly barangay officials.

DSWD serves as the vice chairperson of RIACTION chaired by Department of Justice (DOJ) which takes lead in implementing the Republic Act No. 9208 otherwise known as the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003.

Versoza, together with Regional Prosecutor Antonio B. Arellano, forged a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Panabo City Mayor Jose Silvosa officially linking the city government of Panabo into the regional alliance against trafficking in persons.

In a press forum, “Tikad sa Kalambuon,” Silvosa admitted that Panabo “is vulnerable” to incidence of trafficking in persons, due to the presence of a wharf serving cargo vessels that are loading export products bound for Europe, Japan, and the Middle East.

Panabo City and Davao Oriental are among the local government units that DOJ cites as members of RIACTION but Prosecutor Arellano intends to widen the alliance against trafficking, taking into the network of all LGUs.

In the same press forum, Arellano lauded the city government of Panabo for having taken a pro-active measure against human trafficking by passing the City Ordinance No. 48-08 or the “Anti-trafficking in Persons in the City of Panabo.”

The ordinance was passed way ahead of the creation of RIACTION which was formally formed in Region XI in May 2011.

Arellano hopes that with the integrated alliance of concerned national line agencies and LGUs, the courts would achieve more conviction of cases on human trafficking.

Meanwhile, in her presentation, Assistant Regional Prosecutor Barbara Mae P. Flores said that R.A. 9208 refers to trafficking in persons, “to recruitment, transportation, transfer or harboring or receipt of persons with or without the victim’s consent or knowledge within or across national borders by means of threat or use of force, or other forms of coercion, abduction, fraud, deception, abuse of power or of position."

Such crime is said to be committed by, “taking advantage of the vulnerability of the persons or the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person for the purpose of exploitation which includes at a minimum, the exploitation or the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labor or services, slavery, servitude or the removal or sale of organs.”

Tagumeño kids treated to dinosaur show

TAGUM CITY, Davao Del Norte- Mayor Rey T. Uy gave Tagumeño children a chance to have a close encounter with the dinosaurs with the opening of the Dinosaurs Alive Theme Park in this city’s Energy Park in Barangay Apokon last May 3.

Selected children coming from the 23 barangays of Tagum virtually took a trip down to the dinosaur age with the installment of life-size animals in the sprawling park, during the park opening, courtesy of the City Government of Tagum.

Mayor Uy believes this is one way of giving the Tagumeño children a much-needed introduction to the beasts which scientists believed first appeared during the Jurassic period, approximately 230 million years ago.

Tagum 1st Councilor De Carlo “Oyo” Uy led the ceremonial ribbon-cutting ceremony of the said park, assisted by Coun. Nicandro “Nickel” Suaybaguio and City Administrator Rafael E. Abrenica, along with kids from Barangay Visayan Village, Barangay Magugpo East, and Barangay Apokon, who were the first batch to witness the moving dinosaur replicas that was made more realistic with sounds.

The life-size replicas of dinosaurs originally came from Australia and have been rotating in key cities in the Philippines for exhibition, says Mercy Bustamante, Dinosaurs Alive Theme Park administrator.

The said park runs until tomorrow, May 9 before moving to its next destination which is Baguio City. The Dinosaurs Alive Theme Park just finished exhibiting at Cebu City and Davao City.

The regular ticket price is P150 each, while it is P75 for children. The park is open daily from 10 a.m. to 12 midnight.

Care for School Chairs Program inspires Kaya Natin Champions

TAGUM CITY- Two Davao City-based good governance advocates of the Kaya Natin Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership lauded Mayor Rey T. Uy’s Care for School Chairs Program, describing it as “noble and passionate.”

Second District Councilor April Marie Dayap and former Councilor Mabel Sunga-Acosta of Davao City joined the growing number of volunteers who took part in Mayor Uy’s brainchild project dubbed as Care for School Chairs Program, strengthening the latter’s call for the society to make a difference in the learning of school children in Davao Region.

“We believe in the project of Mayor Uy. In fact, bilib kami sa kanya kasi (we admire it because) he is helping out of his constituency,” stressed Acosta in an interview during their volunteer work last April 30, 2012.

Acosta and Dayap was joined by 25 volunteers coming from the latter’s legislative staff, Kaya Natin and the Mindanaoan Youth Development Council.

Dayap said she was surprised to know that the local government of Tagum did not only fabricate chairs and desks for students but also bookshelves, teacher’s tables and computer tables.

She noted that requests from schools in Davao City for school chairs delivery was also granted by LGU Tagum late last year.

Mayor Uy, on the other hand, extended his gratitude to the group for their effort to volunteer whom Acosta described as “sweat equity.”

But the local chief executive said all their effort will go a long way in helping school children, especially those who have dilapidated chairs in far-flung schools.

Kaya Natin is a non-partisan movement composed of Filipinos from different sectors of society that aim to espouse genuine change and ethical leadership in the Philippines. Their members include DILG Sec. Jesse Robredo, former Pampanga Governor Ed Panlilio and former Isabela Governor Grace Padaca, who was toured by Mayor Uy in the fabrication section during her visit in the city last March 2012.

Now on its 8th month of operation, the Care for School Chairs Program makes use of confiscated logs and fabricates it into school chairs, desks and tables, which are distributed for free to different schools in Davao Region.

Since August 2011 to April 28, 2012, the program has now delivered 38,440 pieces of chairs consisting of right-handed and left-handed armchairs, desks, kiddie chairs with tables to the different schools in the provinces of Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley, Davao del Sur and in the City of Davao.

Cooperatives are helping the government meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) by way of alleviating poverty, sending children to school and empowering women.

Benjamin Togonon Sr, networking officer of MASS SPEC (Mindanao Alliance for Self-Help Societies-Southern Philippines Educational Cooperative Center) explained that the capitalization that cooperatives enables its members put up their businesses, which in effect generates employment.

“The P20 billion worth of combined assets of the 97 MASS-SPEC member cooperatives have been able to generate employment and financial assistance to small farmers, fisher-folks and even vendors,” he said during the Kapihan sa Dabaw held at SM City Davao.

Guesting in the same forum, Mass-SPEC vice chairperson and chaiperson of Tagum Cooperative Norma Pereyras said Tagum Cooperative rolled out as of March this year P1.17 billion loans to its 71,800 members, among whom are tricycle drivers, teachers, ordinary workers, vendors, farmers, and micro-small entrepreneurs.

Citing a particular case, Tagum Cooperative general manager Juriz Perez said Tagum Cooperative is helping tricycle drivers save as well as get financial assistance through its Pabilisang Savings para sa Drivers Advocacy (PASADA).

Tagum Cooperative puts up a kiosk just like a drive-through facility at its main branch in Tagum City through which tricycle drivers can easily deposit as low as P20 to P100 savings a day.

“Bahala na ginagmay basta kanunay. (No matter how small but always). That way they can save and later, avail loan products of T agum Cooperative,” she said.

Tagum Cooperative has also put up a branch at Tagum City Public Market to cater to vendors and micro entrepreneurs.

In a separate media forum, Tagum Public Market Branch manager Ria Diosa Callao said micro entrepreneurs at Tagum Public market especially the vendors were glad that Tagum Cooperative put up a branch near them.

Tagum Cooperative encourages savings parallel with loans. It requires P500 initial share capital (of the P8,000 minimum share capital) as part of the total P1,800 membership fee.

In extending financial assistance, Tagum Cooperative allows members to loan 90 percent of their share capital as one of its loan products.

To encourage pupils and high school students to save for their future, Tagum Cooperative has opened their Aflatoun Program in Tagum City public elementary schools, through which pupils can deposit savings of as low as P5.

Aside from educating children about their rights and responsibilities, Aflatoun teaches them to manager their financial resources. Aside from the Philippines, 82 more countries are implementing Aflatoun, reaching out to more than 1 million children.
