DAGUPAN CITY (PNA) -- The city council passed a resolution on Tuesday authorizing Mayor Belen T. Fernandez to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the City of Duarte in California for the purpose of establishing a sister city relationship.

Councilors Marvin V. Fabia and Dennis C. Canto, authors of the resolution, said the measure aims to widen the city’s sphere of diplomatic relations and intend to establish friendship ties anchored on shared and mutual ideas, vision and principles.

Mayor Fernandez along with Fabia, Canto and Councilors Jose Netu Tamayo and Alvin Coquia, visited Duarte City last month after accompanying exchange students from Dagupan City who visited Milpitas City which mayor is Jose Esteves, a son of Dagupan.

Canto said the proposed sisterhood relationship will include the mutual economic, social, political and cultural benefits and the advancement of international relations, goodwill and cooperation, particularly through reciprocal social and cultural exchanges between the peoples of Dagupan and Duarte cities.

A copy of the resolution passed by the council will be sent to to new Duarte Mayor Samuel Kang.

Earlier, the city council also approved another resolution seeking the establishment of sisterhood relationship between Dagupan and Xiamen, China.

Dagupan's lone sister city today is Milpitas in California. The previous one is Iwata city in Japan.
