THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Davao Region plans to expand the scope of areas to be rehabilitated under the National Greening Program (NGP) of the administration before the change of administration in June.

DENR-Davao Regional Director Joselin Marcus Fragada said the bureau is planning to rehabilitate 10,920 hectares or more with 18,194,000 seedlings this year, especially with the recent fire incident at Mt. Apo, the highest peak in the Philippines.

“The target would be 14,000 hectares. This is the last year of the NGP and we are nearing already the national target of being able to plant 1.5 billion trees over 1.5 million hectares,” Fragada said.

Based on the initial list, the DENR aims to plant 4,909,000 seedlings in Davao Oriental; 2,165,500 in Davao del Norte; 4,521,000 in Compostela Valley; 4,232,000 in Davao del Sur and 2,366,500 in Davao Occidental.

The DENR-Davao said it has so far accomplished about 50 percent, in terms of the total areas planted, under the NGP this year.
