Dietary supplement is a product that contains vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids, enzymes, and/or other ingredients intended to supplement the diet. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has special labeling requirements for dietary supplements and treats them as foods, not drugs.

Manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplements and dietary ingredients are prohibited from marketing products that are adulterated or misbranded. That means that these firms are responsible for evaluating the safety and labeling of their products before marketing to ensure that they meet all the requirements of DSHEA and FDA regulations.

Wars of ancient history were about possessions, territory, power, control, family, betrayal, lover's quarrel, politics and sometimes religion.

But we are in the Modern era and supposedly more educated and enlightened .

Think about this. Don't just brush off these questions.

  • Why is RELIGION still involved in WARS? Isn't religion supposed to be about PEACE?
  • Ask yourself; What religion always campaign to have its religious laws be accepted as government laws, always involved in wars and consistently causing WARS, yet insists that it's a religion of peace?

WHY??

There are only two kinds of people who teach tolerance:
  1. The Bullies. They want you to tolerate them so they can continue to maliciously deprive you. Do not believe these bullies teaching tolerance, saying that it’s the path to prevent hatred and prejudice.
  2. The victims who are waiting for the right moment to retaliate. They can’t win yet, so they tolerate.

CDO port performance cited by Customs chief

By Paul M. Gutierrez

BUREAU of Customs (BoC) Commissioner Isidro Lapeña cited the officials and employees of the Port of Cagayan de Oro for their exemplary performance in an effort to restore the morale of the bureau which has been badly affected by the ongoing congressional probe on corruption inside the agency highlighted by the successful entry into the country last May of 605 kilos of shabu.

Alvin Enciso, officer-in-charge (OIC) of the port’s Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS), said during Lapeña’s visit, they presented the new customs chief with an inventory of their apprehended shipments for the last three months that include the ‘M/V Jake Vincent Seis,’ which they apprehended last September 8.

The vessel was discovered to be plying the BIMP-EAGA route carrying taxable commercial goods worth over P35 million despite its franchise limiting its operation to Philippine waters.

The BIMP-EAGA refers to the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines East Asia Growth Area that seeks to boost trade and commerce among the participating countries.

The other seized goods, Enciso told this writer, consisted of “misdeclared” items and agricultural products that arrived without the required import permit.

Last month, Enciso said their anti-smuggling operations resulted to the confiscation of a 20-footer van loaded with P1.5 million worth of steel cylinders from China and 2x40-footer vans of red onions worth P5 million also from China.

Last July 20, the port, under Collector Jamail Marohomsalic, also apprehended another 2X40 vans loaded with two units of “dismantled” cargo trucks from Japan worth over P3 million.

Marohomsalic also informed Lapeña that from January to August, the CDO collected a “surplus” revenue of around P1.5 billion, collecting over P8.95 billion from its assigned target of over P7.4 billion.

Lapeña assumed the top customs post last August 30 and quickly moved to restore the agency’s morale by praising the accomplishments of various customs units and collection districts.

Lapeña replaced former Phil. Marines captain, Nicanor Faeldon, who was tagged by Sen. Panfilo Lacson as among those involved in corruption at the agency.

Faeldon and other members of the ‘Grupong Magdalo’ that he brought into the bureau are now also facing criminal charges for their alleged involvement in the smuggling of shabu into the country. The incident remains the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee.

THE Servants of All Global Incorporation (Soagi) conducted a community outreach activity last Sunday, September 17, at Barangay Pagatpat Covered Court, Cagayan de Oro City.

The organization also did consultations on the processing and issuance of birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, passport application and processing, National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) clearance and application, legal consultation.

The community service was made possible with the help of the eight national agencies involved namely Department of Health, NBI, Department of Justice, Public Attorneys Office, Department of Foreign Affairs, Professional Regulation Commission, Philippine Statistics Authority, National Statistics Office; and also Armed Forces of the Philippines and Navy.

Some 2,000 beneficiaries of the one-day activity included residents of different uptown barangays which includes Barangay Pagatpat, Barangay San Simon, Barangay Canito-an and Barangay Baingkingon.

Salvador said they also distributed groceries and goods to victims of the fighting in Marawi City with the help of Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Soagi is a non-profit, non-religious and non-political organization which aspire to assist less fortunate individuals.

Capitol launches free internet access

By Alwen Saliring

FREE internet access is now available at the Provincial Capitol after the Misamis Oriental Provincial Government launched on Monday, September 25, free Wi-Fi internet access anywhere within the compound in Cagayan de Oro City.

Governor Yevgeny Emano said internet access nowadays has become very useful, prompting the Provincial Government to partner with the Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT)-Smart Communications to provide free wi-fi internet connection.

"Not only for the few but most of us ride the advent of technology. It is the best and quickest way to connect to our loved ones here and abroad. It has been the norm of the entire world. It is actually our main purpose of launching the free Wi-Fi access to each Misamisnon and Kagay-anon," Emano said.

The governor said Misamis Oriental is the first province to launch the free Wi-Fi access among all other provinces in Northern Mindanao.

Emano is grateful to the PLDT-Smart group led by its manager, Jimmy Chu, for the trust and confidence to the provincial government for this meritorious undertaking that would benefit internet users.

"Especially those less privileged who can't afford, they can already use the internet in the capitol to connect to people and to help clients of nearby agencies like the National Bureau of Investigation to retrieve documents through the internet," Emano said.

Emano, however, said he wants to make it difficult to access websites inappropriate for minors.

The governor also assured that free internet connection will not hamper the daily activities and work of capitol employees and so delivery of basic services is also not disturbed.

"Previously we have tri-media. Now we have quad media because of internet. Dako usab ikatabang kini sa atong turismo (It can also help a lot in our tourism). Eventually we will be stricter especially in monitoring the children-users those that are not suitable for them especially that we are near the schools. Of course it will be part of our security measures," Emano said.

"One thing I assure the people of Misamis Oriental is that no single employee will become lazy due to the free internet access because we do actually have a connection already for own consumption. This time, it's for the general public to enjoy," Emano added.

Emano said the internet provider assured good internet service.

"Mr. Chua actually assured us that they will constantly monitor the number of our users and vowed to give us good service," Emano said.

By Jaime A. Frias II

BULUA Central School, Corpus Christi School, Kauswagan National High School and Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School (MOGCHS) were the big winners in this year’s Milo Little Olympics Mindanao chess competition held at Limketkai Mall in Cagayan de Oro, over the weekend.

Bulua and Kauswagan shared the spotlight in the elementary wars as they captured the boys and girls crowns, respectively, even as MOGCHS and Corpus Christi showed dominance in the secondary boys and girls’ divisions.

But, it was a dramatic finish for Bulua’s elementary chessers as they made their presence “unnoticed” for the crown.

Bulua team of coach Gemma Caingin and composed of Ace Ceralde, Lance Panaligan, Joel Hoy and Sage Magsalay, prevailed in a triple tiebreaker over Corpus Christi and Golden Cedar Christian Academy for the first place, in fact, edging the David Rey Ancheta-led Little Knights by only .5 point.

“S’werte kaayo ang Bulua kay na 4-0 nila ang Bayabas, unya daug sa team pero napildi ang board 4 sa Corpus in the last round mao nakalabaw og.5 lang gyod,” said William Reintegrado, among the stewards of tournament arbiter Lorenzo Cuizon.

The Ruelle Canino-powered Kauswagan, on the other hand, reigned supreme in the elementary girls after finishing with perfect 10 points. While Bulua Central School and Tagoloan Central Elementary School came second and third with a similar 8-point finish.

The MOGCHS Cavaliers of coach Chito Teopiz and bannered by Christian Aquino and Ronald Canino sustained their dominance in the secondary boys as they finished with 13 points to cop the title.

Early favorite Xavier University High School of coach Silverio Abasolo and fronted by the solid troika of Adrian Othniel Yulo, Gian Espiritu and Carl Honculada bagged the second place with 12 points, while Corpus Christi anchored by the unbeaten tandem of board 1 Euniel Grant Capilitan and board 4 Kenneth Caingin secured the third spot with 10 points.

The Corpus Christi lady pawnpushers of coach Lynde `Shirov’ Salgados finally ended MOGCHS’ reign with the rookie foursome of Lorebina Carrasco II, Gwen Escarda, Althea Nicole Borres and Alyssa Maestrado dishing out brilliant chess in taking the secondary girls crown.

MOGCHS, comprised of the experienced Vanessa Magno, Jemma Japay and Gwyneth Ampeth, settled at second place.

Palay production in NorMin up in Q3

By Mark Francisco (PNA)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY—Northern Mindanao's palay production increased by 36.8 percent in the third quarter of the year as compared to the same period last year, following the implementation of the government's "Plant Now Pay Later" program.

The region's total palay output reached 136,331 metric tons from June to August of the present year as compared to last year's 99,644 metric tons, according to the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda), which largely attributed the increase to the government’s hybrid seeds intervention.

Clark Cañete, NEDA-10 chief regional economic specialist, said the loan facility means farmers can already afford the use fertilizer to improve harvest.

With this, Region 10’s total stocks as of July 1 was placed at 1.3 million sacks, estimated to last 46 days based on the region’s daily rice consumption of 28,420 sacks.

Meanwhile, corn farmers were able to fully recover from the ill effects of El Niño and harvested 66,163 metric tons from July to August 2017, Cañete said.

Cañete attributed this to the farmers’ use of modern open pollinated variety of both white and yellow corn seeds.

Meanwhile, coconut by-products exported during the same period increased by 4.95 percent to 121,978 metric tons. They are in the form of activated carbon, coconut chemicals, coconut oil, coconut cream, coconut milk powder, coconut peat, coconut shell charcoal, coconut water, copra cake, dessicated coconut, toasted coconut, fresh young nut, reduced fat coconut, palm fatty acid and sweetened coconut.

The region’s overall production of major crops reached 2.6 million metric tons, exceeding last year’s level for the same three months by 105 percent. The major crops are identified as sugarcane, banana, pineapple, cassava and sweet potato.

DepEd-Northern Mindanao to launch 'Dugong Guro'

By Pamela Jay F. Orias

THE Department of Education (DepEd) in Northern Mindanao is aiming this year to surpass the number of blood packs it gathered through the "Dugong Guro" campaign last year, the biggest blood drive among public school teachers and non-teaching personnel all over the region.

Allan Farnazo, DepEd-Northern Mindanao director said, last year, the Red Cross has gathered a total of 19,202 blood bags from the teachers, surpassing its 14,000 blood bags target the previous year.

"We are positive because last year, we only counted 38,000 teaching personnel, but this year, the number increased from 38,000 to 43,666 additional teachers because of the Senior High program," he said.

Farnazo said the 19,000 blood bags were able to save lives of soldiers fighting against terrorists in Marawi City.

Farnazo, the first regional director in the region to initiate the program, said he is confident that the program will achieve its 100 percent target, to provide safe, adequate, and readily-available blood supply here.

"We always think that heroes are those who are erected in monument,s most heroes shed blood for country, so I thought, why can't we be heroes by giving our own blood," he asked.

"We're trying to position DepEd in terms of community support, this is why we initiated blood-giving," he addeed.

City Mayor Oscar Moreno, who attended the program launching on Thursday, said the program is a milestone for the education department.

"Dili mo obligado ani, this is your own initiative, yet you are all happy to donate. We know that blood is very important in saving lives, daghan kaayo nga tao ang dili maka-avail kay tungod sa atong shortage," he said.

Last year, the province of Bukidnon had the highest number of teacher-donors.

Dr. Myra Yee, blood center manager, said the shortage of blood supply has always been a perennial problem of the region and of the country. Citing a report of the World Health Organization, Yee said the Philippines has the lowest donation rate in the world.

Yee said to date, the shortage has gotten worse because of the Marawi siege as soldiers wounded each day drive up the need for blood.

Yee pointed out the importance of blood drives, saying that no blood drive in a day could also mean zero blood bags for the day.

"We hope that we can surpass what we achieved last year, because last year's supply is a really great help labina if naay emergency cases, such as the Marawi conflict and all others," she added.

Tejero keeps top post at City Central School

By Pamela Jay F. Orias

CITY Central School principal Arnold Tejero, who is facing child abuse charges, will remain the principal of the most populated elementary public school in Cagayan de Oro.

According to Allan Farnazo, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG)-Northern Mindanao regional director, that although in prison, Tejero cannot be removed from his post, pointing out that the latter can still avail all legal remedies available.

Farnazo said though several complaints have already been filed before appropriate office such as the Office of the Ombudsman against the principal, there is still no decision that dismissed Tejero from service.

Farnazo, in that event, said Tejero has still the options to contest the decisions rendered.

"Dili man siya matangtang kay naa may legal process ana, bag-o man ta makatangtang (He won’t be kicked out of the position since we have a legal process), we would want to receive first a complaint, pareha gud anang mga governors na naay kaso, mo-continue man sila sa ilang duty (just like those of the governors, even with their cases, they may continue on their duties)," he said.

Chief Inspector Harvey Abellanosa, station commander of the Cogon police, said Tejero is brought to Lumbia City Jail yesterday morning, following the receipt of his commitment order.

Abellanosa said Tejero has yet to post bail, which is worth P80,000.

Tejero was arrested after a warrant of arrest, issued by Regional Trial Court Branch 22, came out against him for alleged child abuse.

It can be recalled that Tejero was also accused of acts of lasciviousness last year, filed by a mother of a 5th grader. He was also accused of sexual harassment by his own teachers.

Seven Seas to open next month

By Pamela Jay Orias

THE first themed water park in Northern Mindanao will be opening next month.

Elpidio Paras, owner of the Seven Seas Waterpark, said they initially planned to open the park once the martial law will be uplifted at the end of the year.

But Paras, speaking before businessmen attending the Mindanao Business Conference (Minbizcon), said they are opening earlier after observing no significant effect of martial law in Cagayan de Oro City.

"The problem in Marawi is diminishing, there has been no effect in the business here in Cagayan de Oro, that is why we're pushing for its opening," Paras said.

"We are going to do a soft opening at the end of the month but our grand opening will be sometime in October, we have not announce a particular date because we're still going to arrange the schedule of our VIP guests who will be coming," he said.

To ensure the security of the waterpark, Paras said the park will have its own security manager who will oversee the park’s security concerns.

Paras said over 100 employees will be assigned to help secure the park and respond to emergencies.

Paras said the entrance fees would differ on weekends and weekdays -- P799 for weekdays and P999 for weekends.

"It's going to be worth it. Our experience in Dahilayan is people pay up to P600 for the ride and that takes only seconds, but this one what you pay is for the whole day stay in the theme park," Paras said, who also owns the Dahilayan Adventure Park.

"The dream was that we will create a weekend of fun for all our guests because they can go rafting on the first day of visit here in Northern Mindanao, go to Dahilayan on the second day, and on their way to the airport, they can pass by Opol for the waterpark," he said.

Paras said they are also planning to build a hotel beside the waterpark for the guests' convenience.

Paras said Opol town is a very strategic area for investments as the municipality is only near to Cagayan de Oro, the west-bound terminal, and also near the Laguindingan Airport.

The Seven Seas management will also hold a job fair on Saturday, September 9, at the Ayala Activity Center.

"We would prefer that the applicants come from Opol and nearby places however we only select the ones that are qualified, and those that we think that will be part of the culture of Seven Seas. We are still hiring, there are a lot of slots to be filled," he said.

The water park, which sits in a seven-hectare property, is patterned after various water parks abroad.

It is a pirate-themed park with over 20 different slides, rides and attractions, as well as restaurants, cafes and food kiosks to service a visitor capacity of at least 2,000 daily.

CLI expands in CDO; acquires 7.2-ha property for development

By DORIS DUMLAO-ABADILLA (Philippine Daily Inquirer)

Newly-listed property developer Cebu Landmasters Inc. (CLI) has expanded its footprint in Cagayan de Oro with the acquisition of a 7.2-hectare property for a new residential development.

Cagayan de Oro, the 10th most populous city in the country, is one of the key sites identified by the company for its Visayas-Mindanao expansion as stated in the use of its initial public offering (IPO) proceeds.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Friday, CLI said it had executed a deed of absolute sale with a local landowner to purchase the property for P133.42 million.

“The Cagayan de Oro (CDO) property will be developed into a residential project carrying Cebu Landmasters’ Velmiro Heights brand first launched in Cebu in 2013,” the disclosure said.

“In response to the growing needs and preferences of various markets, CLI will be developing its second Velmiro Heights project in CDO to be launched in the first quarter of 2018,” it added.

The project is envisioned to be modern mid-range residential development offering “comfortable and well-designed homes and generous amenities to satisfy the preferences of the city’s upwardly mobile clientele.”

This will be CLI’s second project in CDO after MesaVerte, a three-tower condominium that has now sold 95 percent of its inventory of 798 units.

The land acquisition was funded with proceeds from its IPO.

Within three months from its debut on the local stock exchange last June 2, CLI has used 15.4 percent of its IPO proceeds. It is confident that its other projects will be implemented on schedule.

Founded in 2003 by real estate veteran Jose Soberano III, CLI is a developer of vertical and horizontal residential projects, mixed-use office developments and a hotel, covering a wide segment of the property market.

The company aims to be the “preferred” developer in the Visayas and Mindanao region in three years.

Minbizcon showcases local inventions

By Pamela Jay F. Orias

LOCALLY-DEVELOPED inventions are close to being showcased in the mainstream market as investors flock to the exhibit of the Department of Science and Technology at the Mindanao Business Conference (Minbizcon) on Friday, September 8, at the Xavier Sports and Country Club.

Alfonso Alamban, DOST-Northern Mindanao regional director, said at least 59 investors showed interest for the Filipino inventions.

"Ang next step ana mag-negotiate na sila technology generator or inventor, mag-advise dayon ang panel of experts kung sakto ba ang pricing sa tanan, fair ba sa generator, sa investor, ug fair ba sa market, and we hope more investors would express interest," he said.

Alamban said food-related inventions are the most attractive technology to investors saying 80 percent of the clients are into food processing.

Among the inventions include a pelletizing machine for goat feeds, a modified handloom weaving machine, ready-to-eat Arroz Caldo, a calamansi oil extractor, and a biotech enzyme, among others.

Alamban said the DOST has been implementing programs and policies to facilitate a more proactive technology transfer system, such as programs in Technology Transfer Protocol, and the Intellectual Property Policy.

"There is no end to the creativity, practical thinking, and innovativeness of Filipino inventors. Here at the Technology Transfer Day, we converge, for the technology generators and adoptors who are holding deal negotiations and consultations, as well as fast-tracked evaluations from the Fairness Opinion Board," he added.

Meanwhile, Oro Chamber President Robertino Pizzaro said the Minbizcon, which ended yesterday, September 9, was successful.

He said there were a lot of sponsors and partners who supported the affair despite the ongoing conflict in Marawi.

Pizzaro also reiterated the business sector’s continuing support of the martial law declaration to quell terrorism.

"We support the martial law, the terrorism that's happening here is a big obstacle to the plans and programs of the President, and to our programs. It was a very good move, our President acts quickly, very decisive. The martial law was very much needed," he said.

"Initially, the first month of the martial law, we really felt the down, but later on, it got better, especially with the influx of Maranaos here, madami ding pumunta sa mga department stores, sa hotels, so it's a matter of balance. We can say that, martial law is effective," he added.

Misamis Oriental releases P58 million for agriculture projects

By Pamela Jay F. Orias

THE Misamis Oriental Provincial Agriculture Office (Mopao) has released some P58 million for projects for local farmers as of August 2017, Governor Yevgeny Vincente Emano said.

Emano said P39 million of the total amount came from the Provincial Government while the other P19 million was sourced from the National Government’s General Appropriations Act (GAA).

In a report, MOPAO chief Dr. Benjamin Resma said farmer-beneficiaries had availed of different programs of the Mopao like the distribution of bags of rice, corn, vegetables, and cacao seedlings in partnership with the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA).

“We also had dispersed Tilapia fingerlings for our fishery production. Aside from these, we are also able to give molasses to these farmers who are into organic farming,” Resma said.

Resma said the Mopao also turned over irrigation facilities and other farming equipment such as pumps and engines, knapsack sprayers, fish landings, bottom set gill nets, squid jigger fish stalls, fiber glass boat engines and payaw.

It has also conducted trainings for farmers, and even sending them to schools to acquire new techniques in rice and corn production, including a farmers' tour, where 25 cacao farmers acquired actual cacao care and management course.

The Mopao, Resma says, has monitored and validated reports of rat infestation and flash flood crop damage amounted to P30.3 million.

“But the office has submitted a proposal for a project to recover the damage amounting P7.5 million. Thus, we received P1.5 million worth of rice, corn and vegetable seeds,” Resma said.

Emano for his part, said these community interventions have impacted greatly on the costs of production in the province, where 47 percent of the 4,633 farmers belong to the poverty line.

“You see, 2,760 farm households are now able to provide enough safety and nutritious vegetables for a family with six members," the governor said.

To date, 100 farm households has started practicing organic farming; 145 farmers reduced 20 percent production cost with the use of agri machineries and equipment; 561 fishermen got better price of fish produce, increased fish catch, reduced time in fishing due to efficient and appropriate fishing gears and facilities; developed or enhanced agri learning sites namely: Buhian Diversified Farm at Initao; Apag Farm in Laguindingan; and Holy Family Farm in Gingoog City; and 1,084 farmers and fishermen acquired new knowledge and techniques in farming and fishing.

The Provincial Government of Misamis Oriental ranked 5th of the Regional Gawad Saka Awards, and also bagged the Outstanding Provincial Agriculture and Fisheries Council (PAFC), Outstanding Municipal Agriculture and Fisheries Council (MAFC), Organic Farming Family, Agri Scientist and Barangay Food Terminal Operator. Of these five awards, these — PAFC, MAFC and Barangay Food Terminal Operator (High Land Fresh Inc.) — became top three national winners.

"These accomplishments of the MOPAO have inspired award-giving bodies in the country. These have actually been appreciated, we are so grateful that our effort is being recognized,” the governor said.

Cagayan de Oro’s online payment improves tax earnings

By Pamela Jay Orias

THE Cagayan de Oro City Government's online payment and billing system has resulted to a tax collection worth more than P2.3 million from January to July alone of this year.

In his report, City Treasurer Ramon Antonio Mendoza said the earnings during this period came from business tax, real property tax, building fees, and traffic violations, among others.

Mendoza said the new payment system has dramatically helped in the increase of its collections, since the process of the payment is made easier for the public.

The online payment system was initiated by the City Government to give convenience and hassle-free service to taxpayers as long as internet connection is available.

This program has also been lauded by the National Competitiveness Council (NCC).

City Mayor Oscar Moreno was invited by the NCC to speak in the 5th Regional Competitiveness Summit and Awards ceremony last August 16, in PICC Reception Hall, Pasay City to share the city's programs in terms of its technology innovations.

Launched only this year, the e-payment system allows residents and businesses pay their bills, such as business permit, real property tax, traffic citation, market stall rental, sales tax, transfer tax, and city building fees through the Globe-Cash Mobile Services and by dialing *137# on their phones.

The City Government is positive that with the new and improved payment system, it can surpass its total tax collections last year.

Last year, the Bureau of Internal Revenue collected P12.47 billion in 2016 as compared to its tax take of P10.75 billion in 2015, posting a growth rate of 15.96 percent or an increase of P1.72 billion.

Cagayan de Oro is the top collection revenue district of the BIR, among all other cities in Northern Mindanao.
