Bike Tune-Up Tips
To do some basic tune-up a cyclist might consider having the following tools:
- Allen wrenches (2-8mm) - An Allen wrench, Allen key, hex key or hex head wrench is a bicycle tool used to drive screws and bolts with a hexagonal socket in the head.
- Chain tool - A chain tool is a small mechanical device used to "break" a bicycle chain in such a way that it could be mended with the same tool.
- Cone wrenches - A Cone Wrench is a thinner than standard open ended wrench designed to fit the narrow gripping surface on the bearing cones of a bicycle wheel hub. Typically, the wrench will be in a "dogbone" shape, with a different size opening on each end.
- Screwdrivers (Phillips and flathead)
- Open and/or box wrenches (8, 9, 10, and 15mm)
- Spoke wrench - A spoke wrench is a small wrench used to loosen or tighten the tension in a spoke.
Common sizes include:- .127" (3.23 mm)
- .130" (3.30 mm)
- .136" (3.45 mm)
- Tire levers - A Tire lever is a tool for removing tires from bicycle rims.
- Pump - A bicycle pump is specifically designed for inflating bicycle tires.
