DAGUPAN CITY (PIA) – Malacañang has declared April 5 as a special non-working day in Pangasinan as the province celebrates its 436th founding anniversary known as “Agew na Pangasinan” (Pangasinan Day).

In behalf of President Aquino, Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. signed Proclamation No. 1240 stating that “it is but fitting and proper that the people of the province of Pangasinan be given full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies.”

This is the sixth year that the province is celebrating Agew na Pangasinan since Gov. Amado Espino Jr. signed Provincial Ordinance No. 143 in the year 2010.

The ordinance adopted the result of a study and research submitted by a special committee that unearthed from old documents that Pangasinan was created as a province on April 5, 1580 in the name of the Spanish crown.

Dagupan City, a chartered city by virtue of Republic Act No. 170, is included in the proclamation being an integral part of Pangasinan.

Among the highlights of the occasion include the awarding of winners in the “Kurit Panlunggaring” (Pangasinan Literary Contest) and the giving of ASNA Awards to the province’s sons and daughters who distinguished themselves in their respective professions and lines of endeavor in the Philippines or abroad that made all their province-mates proud.

A report of the Provincial Information Office said the restored Bengzon-Yuson ancestral house that was donated to the provincial government will be unveiled during the Agew na Pangasinan celebration on April 5.

The Bengzon-Yuson building, located in Lingayen town, shall house the Center for Pangasinan Studies and the Pangasinan Historical and Cultural Commission, which will also be inaugurated on the said day.
