TO maximize security in the premises, Barangay Apas in Cebu City recently installed 16 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in both their elementary and high schools.

Village chief Ramil Ayuman, in an interview, said the 16 CCTVs were divided between Camp Lapu-Lapu Elementary School and Apas National High School.

“Each school received eight CCTVs. They were installed last year but the formal turnover was done this month. The cameras will be working 24/7 to make sure the premises are safe and secured,” he said.

Initially planned in 2014, the CCTVs were finally installed following the alarming reports on robbery of school properties.

Since early 2000, the schools, especially Camp Lapu-Lapu, had been subject to robbery with reported stolen items, ranging from Girl Scout funds to computers.

Ayuman said the CCTVs are connected to separate monitors in the barangay control center so that members of the barangay police and other officials can respond immediately to any event threatening the security of the people.

Costing at about P5.4 million, Seven Core Communications Inc., the company who turned over the CCTVs last year, only asked the barangay to pay P800,000.

“We paid them the first half last year and we will pay them the remaining P400,000 this year,” Ayuman said.

Aside from the schools, the barangay also tapped business sectors to help them setup CCTVs in the streets.

The village chief said Gaisano Country Mall and Pino Restaurant have signified that they will be one with the barangay in installing CCTVs in their premises.

“These areas are prone to not only cases of pickpocketing but carnapping, as well. With their (business sector) help in installing CCTVs, we can also help them security-wise in return,” he said.

He added that apart from the CCTVs, a screen in front of the barangay control center will also project announcements and their contact number so that people can reach them whenever they need help.

“I also would like to install wifi near the CCTVs. I want to make the schools wifi-ready because one should never underestimate the power of social media, especially in times that threaten security,” he said.
