- Red Cross honors ‘Galloners’
- by Ramon Dacawi
BAGUIO CITY, July 31 -- The local Red Cross paid tribute last Thursday afternoon to people and groups who bled and continue to bleed to save people they hardly know during medical emergencies.
RC chapter chairman and city councilor Erdolfo Balajadia, chapter administrator Anastacia Tamayo, and secretary to the mayor Rafael Tallocoy presided over the presentation of plaques and certificates of recognition during rites at the city hall multi-purpose center.
“You have touched the lives of others, so they will follow your example,” Tallocoy told representatives of 23 groups and institutions, 10 youngsters belonging to “Pledge 25,” and 20 new members of the Blood Galloners Club.
The “Blood Services Outstanding Award” went to the Philippine Military Academy for having donated 1,857 units (835,650 cc.) of blood in 30 years service to the RC, and the University of Baguio which notched 1,022 units (459,900 cc.) in 14 years.
Sharing the “Scroll of Honor” were St. Louis University (1,292 units or 581,400 cc. in 10 years), University of the Cordilleras ( 816 units or 367,200 cc in 10 years), and Bombo Radyo DZWX (733 units or 329,850 cc. in seven years).
Certificates of appreciation were presented to group donors University of the Philippines-Baguio, Gamma Phi Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, Ang Dating Daan, SM City Baguio, Pines City Colleges, Easter College, Scouts Royale Brotherhood, Aegis People Support, City Government Employees, YMCA of Baguio, Baguio Center Mall, Texas Instruments, Bukal Life Ministries, Department of Public Works and Highways-Cordillera, Tactical Operation Group 1 of the Philippine Air Force, Philippine College of Surgeons, and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Baguio.
Antonio Carreon topped the new members of the Blood Galloners Club, having bled 16 times and turned a galloner last March 8. With him are Julian Tolentino, Melvin Emerson Lee, Christopher Fontiveros, Eric Rimando, Trina Mamaril, Jefferson Liquete, Jericho Dave de Sahagon, Mark Paulo Servito, Amador Javellana, Ericson Valdez, Ian Paulo Acosta, Bede Bawayan Jr., Roman Estepa, Jayla Manangan, Henderson Balanggoy, Fausto Tubig Jr., Merlo Brian Espique, Laurence Daguio, and Jarwin Bacquian.
Their entry upped the club membership to 74, according to Tamayo.
Liquete admitted his brother convinced him to regularly bleed to save lives, while Sahagon said donating blood has become part of his social responsibility.
It’s the same sense of responsibility that inspired prisoners of the city to pass the hat last April. Slowly, they raised P4,000 which they submitted to jail warden, Chief Insp. Severino Khita during their program marking International Red Cross Day and Mother’s Day last May 8 at the prison chapel.
A day after, Dr. Khita asked two female guards to escort an elderly woman inmate who deposited the amount at the PNB Branch along Abanao Road, to the account of Red Cross Philippines.
It was the prisoners’ contribution, through the Red Cross, to the world-wide relief efforts for victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
Cited last Thursday as members of Pledge 25 were Godland Verde, Rey Rio Todias, Joana Marie Publico, Tomas Aduca III, Florentino Corpuz, Gerlyn Almerol, Ma. Ysabel Dipasupil, Liezel Abellera, Jun Michael Labo, and Sean Russel Aguilar.
Tamayo said the group is composed of the RC youth members aged between 18 to 25 who have pledged to bleed every quarter to ensure blood stock during medical emergencies.
The recognition rites marked “Blood Donation Month” with the theme “More Blood, More Life.” (RD-PIO Baguio City/PIA CAR)
