MANILA – Three dining spots in the Philippines are among the 101 best restaurants in Asia for 2015, according to the US-based food website The Daily Meal.
Chef Claude Tayag’s Bale Dutung in Pampanga ranked 98, with The Daily Meal noting how it is “consistently positioned on top restaurant lists and praised by the likes of Anthony Bourdain.”
At No. 64 is Rural Kitchen of Liliw Laguna in Makati, a restaurant by young chef Justin Sarabia. It is a tribute to Sarabia’s grandmother, serving dishes from her recipes with ingredients sourced from her hometown of Liliw.
The highest-ranking Filipino restaurant in The Daily Meal’s list is Purple Yam in Malate by husband and wife tandem Romy Dorotan and Amy Besa, landing at the 60th spot. Purple Yam, which first opened in New York, is known for bringing international attention to Filipino cuisine.
Topping The Daily Meal’s “101 Best Restaurants in Asia for 2015” is Tim Ho Wan in Hong Kong, a hole-in-the-wall restaurant famous for its pork buns and other dim sum items. Tim Ho Wan also has branches in Metro Manila.
The US-based food website said it sought the help of more than 50 experts in coming up with the list, which covered 13 countries. The restaurants were judged according to cuisine, décor, service, experience and value for money, among others.
