Kaya Iloilo sweeps Group B in Copa '21

MANILA – Kaya Iloilo pipped Mendiola with a 6-0 beating on Wednesday night to complete a sweep of Group B action in the Copa Paulino Alcantara at the PFF National Training Centre in Carmona.

A Jovin Bedic brace in the first half set the tone for the inaugural tournament champ even as the club netted three goals in each of the two halves to seal the top seed in its group ahead of the semifinals next week.

Bedic capitalized on an erroneous Mendiola attempt to keep the ball out of his reach and quickly raced inside the penalty box to open the scoring for Kaya Iloilo in the 11th minute.

Thousands swarm ARMM's free Pacman fight telecast

by ALI G. MACABALANG

COTABATO CITY, Philippines – Suspending momentarily their respective endeavors, Filipinos watched anew Sunday the live telecast of their legendary hero Manny Pacquiao fighting Mexican challenger Juan Manuel Marquez in an event to once again put the nation in complete peace.

Over here, all streets virtually turned empty as commuters and vehicle drivers either stayed at home to watch in their television sets the spectacular event, but majority of them trooped to two venues where the live fight was shown show free: the city plaza and the Shariff Kabunsuan Cultural Center (SKCC) of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

Hundreds went to the city government-sponsored free show at the city plaza, while more than 5,000 swarmed inside and outside the huge SKCC theatrical edifice where Acting ARMM Gov. Ansaruddin Adiong also provided free snacks for the viewers.

ARMM Executive Secretary Naguib Sinarimbo, whom Adiong tasked to lead for the third time the “libreng palabas” with free snacks for Pacquiao’s fight, expressed elation over the massive influx of viewers in a “very peaceful and smooth” convergence.

“Everybody in ARMM including Acting Regional Governor Adiong is equally amused with the big turnout and smooth proceedings in our third sponsorship of free live telecast for our national boxing hero, Manny Pacquiao,” Sinarimbo told reporters, who covered and watched the event.

The sponsored live telecast with free snacks kicked off the weeklong celebration of the ARMM’s 22nd founding anniversary, which would formally commence with a parade Monday morning at the 22-hectare regional government compound.

The fully air-conditioned SKCC building has a sitting capacity of 870 and was installed with a giant screen for overhead projector, but over 2,500 spectators barged in while more than 3,000 others stayed at the lobby of the edifice where a smaller screen was also installed.

ARMM security contingents put up a single gate for the event to prevent the entry of bladed weapons, firearms or other harmful objects at the SKCC complex, following a reported blast at the city plaza, venue of the city government-sponsored free telecast, Saturday night.

Before the free live showing of the Pacquiao-Marquez match and its undercard fights, viewers would be shown a video documentation of the highlights of the trailblazing accomplishments of the Adiong administration in 20 months, Sinarimbo said. (Ali G. Macabalang)
