LUCENA CITY, Quezon- The provincial government of Quezon through the environment and natural resources office will plant two million mangrove trees on June 22 at coastal barangays in Quezon province. | |||
This | This is in partnership with other government agencies such as the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, Department of Education, local government units, non-government organizations, and religious organizations. | ||
The program, dubbed, “Quezon’s 2 in 1” or “2 milyong bakawan sa isang araw na taniman” is one of the priority programs of the provincial government headed by Gov. David Suarez which aims to protect coastlines and coastal communities from tidal surges and typhoons by planting mangrove trees along the coastal areas. | |||
According to environment and natural resources office (ENRO-Quezon) headed by Romulo M. Edano Jr. OIC, ENR Officer, mangroves also absorb air and water pollution, especially organic waste. Mangroves also provide nourishment, habitat, and refuge to larvae and fry stages of varied species of fishes, crustaceans, and mollusks along with fish, prawns, and crab. | |||
The program will provide livelihood to local residents of the costal barangays specially the fisher folks. | |||
The two million mangrove trees will be planted in 247.96 hectares of coastal barangays in the towns of Pagbilao, Mauban, Real, Infanta, General Nakar, Patnanungan, Burdeos, Lucena City, Sariya, General Luna, Padre Burgos, Agdangan, Unisan, Pitogo, Macalelon, Catanauan, Mulanay, San Francisco, Buenavista, San Narciso, San Andres, Atimonan, Gumaca, Calauag, Lopez, Guinayangan, Tagkawayan, Alabat and Perez, Quezon. | |||
