LUCBAN, Quezon- Thousands of local and foreign tourists started to flock in this historic town to witness the colorful and exciting activities in ”Lucban San Isidro Pahiyas Festival,” which began on April 8 and will last until May 16.
This year’s theme of the pahiyas festival is “It’s more fun in Pahiyas sa Lucban.”
Cornelio R. Raneses, municipal administrative officer who is also the overall coordinator of the pahiyas sa Lucban said around 300,000 to 500,00 tourists are expected to come in Lucban town to watch and join the famous Pahiyas.
"The festival not only promotes the local tourism of Lucban town and Quezon province, it also generates income on the part of the local government of Lucban as well to other Quezonians," Raneses added.
During the Lucban San Isidro Pahiyas festival, each household tries to outdo the others in terms of creativity. This accounts for some of the most curious décor that the festival tends to show.
Decorating the wall with “Kiping” and with their agricultural harvest is what “Pahiyas” literally means. The most traditional and certainly the most attractive décor comes of course in form of “Kiping,” which are strung together to form all sort turns into absolute cascades of color. This decoration is a form of thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest and in honor of the patron saint of farmers, San Isidro de Labrador.
The Pahiyas festival shall be highlighted also by a holy mass (thanksgiving to San Isidro Labrador), procession, selection of best pahiyas décors, grand parade, and San Miguel Beer Plaza on May 15. The awarding of prizes to the winners of pahiyas contests shall be held also on May 16.
Another one of the highlights in the Pahiyas is the Gayak Karosa. It is a crowd-getter, considering the artistic technology and application of products creativity through the increasing interest of the farmers. Prizes will be given to the winners based on given criteria in terms of creativity, artistry, use of local products, overall impact, and relevance to the theme of the celebration.
