Quezon province’s Jackelyn Orig emerged as the most bemedalled athlete of the PRISAA National Collegiate Games by scoring first-place finishes in 4 swimming events at the Cebu City Sports Center.
The 5-foot-2 freshman of St. Anne College of Lucena pulled off a stirring run on her way to clinching 4 gold medals, humbling hometown ace Loren Dale Echavez, who fell a gold short of her goal.
The 16-year-old CALABARZON athlete won the women’s 50-meter butterfly (31.16), 200-m individual medley (2:40.62) in new meet standards then added two more in the 4x100m medley relay (5:29.58) and 4x200 freestyle, which Orig anchored to another record (10.15.4).
“Masaya po ako pero pagod sa dami ng events na sinalihan ko ngayon,” said the soft-spoken Orig after her marathon performance.
She completed a perfect 7-for-7 of her events, which counted her earlier wins in the 100m, 200m butterfly and 400 individual medley.
She was assured of an incentive bonus of P7,000 – P1,000 for each gold.
Echavez added her 6th gold in ruling the women’s 400m freestyle, besting her previous record of 4:55 minutes in Zamboanga City a year ago with a clocking of 4:55, but was foiled in her bid to match Orig’s haul when Central Visayas was surprisingly relegated to the bronze in 4x200 freestyle relay.
The erstwhile record-holders in the event (10:19.3), the Cebuanas, had a lackluster showing of second-leg swimmer of Lorens Goyenechea, who complained she was exhausted after competing in the 200, 100 and 4x50 freestyle relay last Tuesday.
“My legs were aching and I was forced to take it easy after seeing action in three events the previous day,” said Goyenechea of University of San Carlos, who was close to tears after feeling she let her team down.
But despite CALABARZON’s solid outing in swimming, Central Visayas (Region 7) still had a grip at top spot in the overall medal standings with 48 golds, 15 silvers and 22 bronzes
Region 4-A was a distant second (32-18-28), Western Visayas (Region 6) was running third (26-24-21), and Southern Mindanao (Region XI) was fourth (6-27-27).
The event was supported by Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama.
