LUCENA CITY, Quezon The Provincial Office of the National Statistics Office (NSO) reported yesterday that about 114 babies are born daily in the province.
GUMACA, Quezon- The municipal government of Gumaca through the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) registered 125 students out of the 600 applicants as new beneficiaries for the special program for employment of students (SPES) in this town.

Statistics Officer Irene Pucyutan revealed that the number is based on the 2010 birth statistics survey of the NSO-Quezon. She said this means that about five babies are born every hour in the province. The total number of live births registered during the year 2010 was 41,508, which was lower compared to the previous year’s total of 42,484, she said.
Juanito Q. Nicolas, PESO manager of Gumaca said the SPES beneficiaries passed the interviews and other requirements by the Department of labor and Employment (DOLE) last February 29 at barangay Tabing Dagat Hall in Gumaca.

Records also show that there were more male babies born in Quezon comprising 51.7 percent or 21,479 of the total births. The rest -- 20,029 or 48.3 percent -- were females.
Nicolas added that SPES aims to help poor but deserving students by providing them with jobs this summer for them to finish their studies in high school, college, or any vocational course. The 125 new SPES beneficiaries had been deployed in different departments of the municipal government of Gumaca.

The birth sex ratio was 107 males for every 100 females.
Each SPES beneficiary will receive a daily minimum wage of P 263. Sixty percent of the salary or minimum wage of a student is allotted by the local government of Gumaca while the remaining 40 percent of the salary will be shouldered by the Department of Labor.

NSO records also showed that seven in 10 births were born to mothers aged 20-34 years old and the number of births born to teen-aged mothers was 12.8 percent.
SPES is a continuing program of DOLE in collaboration with the local government units and private schools.

In deliveries, the traditional birth attendants or “hilots” attended to the most number of birth deliveries equivalent to 39.4 percent, physicians shared only 32.4 percent while midwives had 25.5 percent and nurses had a small share of only 1 percent.

Pucyutan added the Lucena City and Lopez town topped the rest of the municipalities in terms of the number of registered births. They also yielded the highest daily average of birth occurrences, 25 for Lucena City and 10 for Lopez town.

Candelaria town placed third with a daily average of seven while Gumaca and Sariaya, both with daily average of five.
