BASCO, Batanes- The local government has chosen to celebrate “Kulay festival” the traditional way by reviving customary games as part of the preservation effort of the Ivatan culture.
For the past three years, traditional games are played to highlight sports festivals.
Ivatan traditional games such as Kalasag, a game using coconut shell with a tie to hold on, on chest level for girls; Kadang-kadang, using bamboo or wooden stilts; the tatus (coconut crab) relay played through backward squatting; Karirit, using stick to let a wheel run thru the alley; the maninadis, local version of going to market with additional load of root crops in the farming basket, unloading and loading race as part of the game; gavu (arm wrestling) and palang (tug of war) were a hit during the two-day festivities.
As in other games, all the traditional Ivatan games were governed by rules.
Traditional games are taught in the elementary and secondary in order to promote appreciation of these games which are much part of the Ivatan culture.
The traditional games are participated in by the young generations.
On the other hand, the palo-palo (traditional war dance of the Ivatans) as s performed simultaneously by three groups; the adult; the teens or secondary school students and the elementary grades to raise the awareness of its preservation of the historic dance between the Spanish missionaries, the captors and the Ivatan pagans, their captives.
