ANTIPOLO CITY | ANTIPOLO CITY- A total of 20 cataract patients were recently treated through the Antipolo city health office (CHO) in cooperation with Resource for the Blinds Inc. (RBI).
The local government’s cataract treatment program is held twice a year through Mayor Nilo Leyble’s 9-Point Agenda program. Less privileged citizens, most of which are senior citizens, are given a chance to receive free treatment in the said program.
Among those who underwent the surgical procedure is 60-year old Rosalinda Dapitan who will be going through an operation for her left eye. "This is my second operation, the first one was for my right eye. I now see clearly and my left eye will be operated next," she said in Filipino. According to her, the program is particularly helpful for elderly citizens like her who do not have the means for cataract treatment.
This year’s first batch of beneficiaries were treated by local doctors last April 2. "We would like to thank Mayor Leyble and RBI for the continuity of this project for our citizens with eye problems most especially the senior citizens who come to our office to apply for the program," said Dr. Antonio Reillo, Antipolo City Health Officer. "We would also like to express our gratitude to Doctors Monserrat and Adeline Zapanta for their contribution to the program and their advocacy for public service," he added.
However, only 20 patients who passed the screening process underwent surgery due to the time constraint and limited facilities for a single day. A screening was also held prior to surgery in order to ensure that the beneficiaries are eligible. According to the local government, those who did not pass the screening or applicants who have not been treated can still apply for the next batch of cataract operations later this year.
Patients to receive surgery must be accompanied by a relative before the procedure and may be disqualified otherwise. Also, patients who have heart diseases may be disqualified due to the delicate procedure which may cause excess stress.
