LUCENA CITY, Quezon- Department of Social Welfare Development (DSWD) Sec. Corazon Juliano Soliman disclosed during the consultation meeting with local chief executives of “makamasang tugon areas” held March 22 at the Queen Margarette Hotel in this city that DSWD will help the provincial government of Quezon in fighting malnutrition in the province.
TAYABAS, Quezon- The Bureau of Agriculture and Statistics Office (BASO) Quezon provincial operation center continues to assist Quezon farmers including non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and local government units (LGUs) through production and marketing analysis service.


Sec. Soliman said the program on the eradication of malnutrition among pre-schoolers or children ages 0-7 year-olds shall be conducted through free supplemental feeding programs specially in the Bondoc Peninsula areas.
Provincial Agricultural Statistics Officer (PASO) Raul Maximo B. Tolentino said the skills in analyzing statistical data or information will help farmers in planting agricultural commodities such as bitter gourd, carrots, squash, eggplant, sweet potato and calamansi at the right time and price.


Meanwhile, the Quezon provincial goverment headed by Governor Suarez reported during the teacher’s convention recently held in this city that the malnutrition problem in the province decreased due to the successful implementation of nutrition programs such as free feeding, nutrijuice as well as the "gulayan sa paaralan program."
BAS has conducted two consultative meetings on marketing information needs assessment (MINA), the first meeting held last October 18, 2011 while the second meeting one was held last March 16, 2012 in Tayabas. These meetings were attended by Quezon farmers, NGOs and LGUs.


Sec. Soliman said DSWD will continue the implementation of Kapit-Bisig Laban sa kahirapan-Comprehensive Integrated Delivery of Social Services program or the KALAHI CIDSS in Quezon province, According to ther, it is very important to continue the program in various municipalities in Quezon that needs immediate assistance from DSWD and other concerned government agencies.
MINA aims to identify major markets or trading centers and their operations, study the provincial marketing system for priority agricultural commodities and to determine the information needs of marketing participants.


“We will construct additional day care centers and classrooms in the municipalities in Quezon province as DSWD’s post aid to some municipalities that needs such projects,” Soliman added. `
The commodities considered and agreed by stakeholders for MINA during the first consultative meeting include rice, yellow corn, cassava, sweet potato, amplaya, eggplant, squash, carrots, banana, calamansi, hogs and Threadfin bream (bisugo) while the commodities considered for MINA during the second consultative meeting are rice, bitter gourd, squash, eggplant, carrots, calamansi and sweet potatoes.


Also present during the consultation with the chief executives were DSWD 4-A Dir. Wilma Naviamos, Quezon Gov. David Suarez, PSWDO Sonia Leyson, municipal mayors Remedios Rivera of Buenavista, Quezon; Eleonor Uy of San Narciso, Quezon; Gil Establicida of Burdeos, Quezon; Renato A. Alilio of Dolores, Quezon and mayor Rodelo Tena of Jomalig, Quezon.
The study is also considering the establishment of the production and marketing analysis service which will help farmers analyze and interpret statistical information which will guide them in their planting schedule. Proper timing of planting and harvesting will result to better return of investment that can uplift farmers' income.
 
The municipal mayors thanked the national government through the DSWD in giving assistance to thepoorest families in their respective towns through the implementation of the DSWD's programs such as the KALAHI CIDSS, Pantawid Pamilya Program and the Self-employment Assistance-Kaunlaran (SEA-K) program that helped many poor families in Quezon in uplifting their quality of life.
