SANTIAGO CITY, Isabela- National Irrigation Administration-Magat River Integrated Irrigation Service (NIA-MRIIS) and city agriculture officials have started to visit and conduct information drive to the different barangays in the city that are covered by the five-cropping-in two years scheme. | |||
The farming scheme aims to produce sufficient rice for consumption of Filipinos without importing from other rice-producing countries. | |||
Under the new farming scheme in the province, the start of land preparation for the second cropping will be conducted on May 2, 2012, the third cropping season will commence on October this year, fourth cropping will start on March 2013 and the fifth cropping will start on December 2012. | |||
Dominador Fernandez, city agriculture office said that farmers are very receptive of the new program and are willing to cooperate as long as the NIA assures the continuous flow of water from the irrigation canal until the harvest time. | |||
“Our farmers in the city assure cooperation and willing to help the government meet the self-sufficiency target on rice,” Fernandez said. | |||
Santiago City has more than 4000 hectares for the five cropping-in-two-years scheme located in different barangays in the city as chosen by the city agriculture office. | |||
