LUCENA CITY, | LUCENA CITY, Quezon– Twenty two child laborers and street children were rescued recently by the joint forces of concerned government agencies at Dalahican fish port under the “Sagip Batang Manggagawa” program of the Department of Labor and Employement (DoLE).
Carol Ortiz of DoLE-Quezon said the rescued children work as porters and divers were classified hazardous to the health and safety of children.
“Out of the 22 child laborers rescued, 17 were out-of-school youths (OSYs), six want to go back to school, and five are in school. Another child, an orphan staying with a relative but paying rent, we decided to take the child under our care,” said Ortiz.
According to Ortiz, the parents and guardians of the children were given counseling and warned not to let their children engage in hazardous activities.
Consequently, the city social welfare and development office (CSWDO) has intensified its campaign against child labor through holding of parents’ effectiveness seminars and other related activities to parents of child laborers.
Meanwhile, Virgilio Magsino, DOLE-Quezon provincial officer, Col. Ramon Balauag of Lucena City PNP; Rhadzma Umilin of CSWDO and city councilor Madeline Bautista composed the rescue team together with other concerned individuals.
