| LUCENA City- The Department of Agriculture is teaming up with the government-owned Radio ng Bayan broadcast station to bring the good news of agricultural reforms, innovations and success stories to the listening grassroots sector across the country. | | LUCENA CITY, Quezon- Seven municipal mayors in this province urged the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to speed up the facilitation of their request for fire trucks and establishment of fire stations in their area. |
|
| |
|
| Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala told the Philippine Broadcasting Service (PBS), which operates all government television and 32 radio stations including DWLC-Radyo ng Bayan-Lucena, that the DA is ready to bring the good news to a wide swath of the listening public now that its programs of agricultural reforms and innovations are in place.
| | Supt. Nelson Jalbuena, BFP provincial officer, confirmed that the municipalities of General Luna, Panukulan, Patnanungan, Jomalig, San Andres, Padre Burgos and General Nakar have no fire stations and fire trucks. |
| | |
| | “We have already submitted to BFP central office the request of the mayors, and yet we are still waiting for its approval," Jalbuena said. |
|
| |
|
| As guest of honor and speaker during the 23rd DWLC held on Wednesday at the Kalilayan Hall here, Alcala reiterated that the country will no longer be importing rice from other countries after 2013 but instead will export it to them.
| | Padre Burgos Mayor Roger Panganiban said the seven towns that have no fire stations are just relying from other municipalities in times of emergencies such fire. |
|
| |
|
| Explaining that the country is slowly gaining ground in its rice self-sufficiency program in 2013, Alcala said the country imported about 2.4 metric tons of rice in 2010, whittled it down to 860,000 metric tons last year and about 500,000 this year with the continuous increase of local rice production.
| | “We are urging DILG and BFP officials to speed up the approval of our request to have fire trucks and fire stations. For so many years we still don’t have these necessities that we can use during emergencies," Mayor Panganiban said. |
|
| |
|
| He said that he was given the marching order of President. Benigno Aquino to introduce agricultural reforms and innovations and that the DA thrust now is to reintegrate various programs and activities in agriculture, introduce economies of scale and help the farmers sell his products in the market.
| | Since they don’t have fire trucks yet, the seven municipal mayors, incoordination with the BFP, are strengthening their efforts through information campaign to prevent fire incidence in their areas. |
| | |
| “We are trying to bring up production of rice, vegetables, livestocks, seafoods and introducing food processing and replicating the Sariaya experience of establishing Sentrong Pamilihan (vegetable trading center) in other parts of the country, facing the agricultural challenges head-on just to improve the lives of the farmers in the country,” Alcala said in his speech.
| |
| | |
| Also present were 201st Infantry Brigade commander Col. Eduardo Año, Quezon police director Senior Supt. Erickson Velasquez, Task Force Lucena commander Col. Narciso Alamag, Lucena City Vice Mayor Rhoderick Alcala and heads of various government agencies and private sector representatives.
