GOVERNOR Oscar S. Moreno is mulling the construction of a primary hospital to serve the hinterland area of Claveria municipality known as Tabuk.
OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis Occidental, Feb. 27 (PIA) -- The provincial government of Misamis Occidental has been nominated for the Red Orchids Award of the Department of Health (DOH).

Tabuk consists of six barangays: Bulahan, Tipolohon, Gregorio Pelaez, Malagana, Parmbugas and Aposkahoy. It is situated some 30 kilometers from the national highway.
The awarding will be done in Manila during the World No Tobacco Day on May 31.

“People from Tabuk have always had problems accessing basic facilities such as hospitals because of its distance from the highway,” Gov. Moreno noted. “Even the nearest hospitals in the poblacions of Claveria or Balingasag are still too far for patients in extremis.”
These institutions are the Department of Education (DepEd)-Misamis Occidental, the Misamis Occidental Provincial Hospital (MOPH), and the provincial government of Misamis Occidental.
Gov. Moreno and Vice Gov. Norris C. Babiera have agreed the primary hospital should be constructed in Barangay Gregorio Pelaez so it could be more accessible to the residents of Tabuk.

Jun Galban, Jr. regional information officer of DOH-10, said the DOH-10 the Red Orchids Award is awarded to local government units, which may be composed of a province, city or municipality, government hospitals, government centers, and DOH Centers for Development that have a policy advocacy against smoking.
Misamis Oriental was awarded its first Galing Pook Award last March 17 by President Aquino in Malacañang in recognition of its outstanding health services program dubbed “Strategic Innovations for Government Hospitals”.

All nominees of the Red Orchid Awards will receive certificates of recognition with a specially designed trophy and a P100,000-worth of nicotine replacement therapy equipment to be used in their smoking cessation services, Galban said. (PN-PIO/PIA 10 Mis. Occ.)
The LGU came up with Provincial and Municipal Investment Plans for Health through which surgeons are detailed to provincial-managed hospitals. A Memorandum of Agreement with the Mindanao Consortium on Surgical Residency Training Program tapped the expertise of 31 multi-specialist staff from hospitals in Cagayan de Oro. The program substantially addressed the problems on hospital services and facilities faced by the province.

Among the innovative strategies the province adopted under the program were the outsourcing of supplemental funds from public and private sources for facility development, established network connectivity to improve referrals and communications, tapped medical societies, introduced a consignment scheme for medical supplies, established a pharmacy enterprise and logical work flows.

Today, the Misamis Oriental Provincial Hospital system includes seven hospitals in Magsaysay, Talisayan, Balingasag, Claveria, Initao, Naawan and Manticao. An eight hospital is now under construction in Alubijid in partnership with the Overseas Workers and Welfare Administration (OWWA).
