LUCENA CITY, Quezon- Provincial Health Officer (PHO) Dr. Agripino Tullas, disclosed recently that the No. 1 killer disease in the province of Quezon is cardio vascular disease (CVD).
LUCENA CITY, Quezon- The city government of Lucena will conduct  a survey on community based monitoring system (CBMS)  from March until May 2012 to gather comprehensive data that can be used in preparing development plans and tools in policy making of the city.

Dr. Tullas said from January to December 2011, 163 cases of CVD were recorded in which 128 were cerebro-vascular accidents and 35 were heart attacks. He added that pre-mature delivery ranked No. 2 while infectious disease such as pneoumonia is the 3rd killer disease in the province.

As precautionary measures, the integrated provincial health office (IPHO) headed by Tullas is continuous in their campaign against CVD. At a recent Monday flag-raising ceremony, Dr. Tullas held a lecture on CVD with provincial government employees in attendance.
Mayor Barbara Ruby Talaga, said the survey will cover 57,000 households in the city with questions on health, nutrition, education, income, employment and others information that can be used as core indicators in the CBMS.

“This aims to prevent thousands of employees from getting non-communicable diseases such as cardio vascular disease, cancer, diabetes and chronic kidney disease,” Dr. Tullas, adding that IPHO also sponsored free blood pressure for the provincial government employees.
“The CBMS is local government based survey designed to address the needs of the people,” Mayor Talaga said.

The provincial health officer is recommending to Quezon residents to do the seven healthy lifestyle habits that include: non smoking, avoiding drinking alcohol, don’t use illegal drugs, eating low salt, low fat, high fiber diet, preventing hypertension (bantay presyon), doing physical activities and managing stress.
She added the CBMS is needed to identify organized data on the total number of residents and their economic status, thus help the local government in improving the delivery of basic services.

City councilor Lenny Papa urged residents of this city to cooperate by answering the survey forms as honest as possible. The questionnaire requires 20-30 minutes interview per household.

“We encouraged city residents to cooperate by telling the true and accurate information on the questions asked by the enumerators to generate credible results of the survey,“ Papa added.

Meanwhile, the city government has already trained 200 enumerators that will be employed in the conduct of CBMS survey for two months.
