HISTORY OF BARANGAY KINUMAN
Barangay Kinuman is divided into two, Kinuman Norte and Kinuman Sur due to its wide area. The river called Limbunga or Limbanganohay, which separates the two barangays, usually gives off great flood despite its small size especially during rainy days.
The early ancestral inhabitants are the Subanen who were usually dwellers of the river. Due to the constant flood and disturbances of whirlwind, they were forced to settle at the safe central parts of the barangay where “Kaingin” is the predominant livelihood. They also made ropes, G-strings, baskets, etc. out of abacas and “oway” and exchanged these products with food and other useful materials needed for their daily needs. They also barter the wild jungle products like assorted wild flowers and animals to the nearby Cebuanos who were given chances of possessing land areas from bartering. Since Subanens usually offered their lands for barter, several Cebuanos after sometimes, owned most of the land area of the two barangays and also sometimes, when Subanens heard sounds of gun shots, they tend to transfer their property. Eventually, Cebuanos inhabitants dominantly occupied the areas, hence named the barangay “mainum kinuman” or “ka-imnan” due to its bountiful ground water source of the barangay.
In the 1920’s Christian dwellers and the Subanen learned both languages due to its constant barter system and by virtue of intermarriages, both culture intermingled with one another.
In 1925, logs and trees were scattered everywhere as a result of kaingin which eventually allow wild grasses, shrubs, and other vegetation to grow especially near the river sides. Wild fruits, trees, and animals are found everywhere and were enjoyed by the inhabitants. The residents were blessed with the bountiful harvest and their lives were busy caring for their rich environment. Fresh water, eventually, poured out from the bis and wild forested barangays called Labo River.
The first recorded Kapitan del Barrio was Edig Bustillos ruling from 1938-1940 then Dionicio Placer in the year 1941-1948, then Epepanio Semini from 1945-1952 and Galicano Limbarinig in 1962-1987.
Recently, they can account few families as the descendants of the earlier settlers. They are the families of Mateos, Gandaya, and Tinong for Kinuman Norte and the families of Orot Dumalti, Kandong, Rayong, Makatulad, Diyano, Bandingon, and Toyabang family for Kinuman Sur.
Great Measures are taken into consideration for the preservation of the culture of the ancestral settlers of the barangays.
