The region will accomplish its target this year in the National Greening Program (NGP) even as it ranks seventh in accomplishments among regions in the country as of September.
LUNA, Apayao- With its virgin forests and its rich natural resources, this quiet and scenic province is ready for an extensive ecological-tourism industry.

‘We are right on track, we are slowly reaching our objective and I am positive that we will reach our objective,’ Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Cordillera regional executive director Clarence Baguilat declared.
Gov. Elias Bulut Jr. is inviting local and foreign tourists alike to see and explore the beauty of this landlocked province in the North.

In the Cordillera region, the NGP program shall plant some 3,400,000 trees covering 6,838 hectares for a period of six years.
“We have many things to offer and we want to share how beautiful our province is. If you are a nature lover, Apayao is a must place to see where you can experience wildlife; our rivers have crystal clear water where you can swim and do fishing," Bulut said.

The province of Abra leads in accomplishing this, followed by Benguet, Kalinga, Mt. Province, Ifugao, and '''Apayao''', Baguilat said.
Bucut lake in the municipality of Sta. Marcela has great potentials for boating, rafting, camping, and picnic.

In order to ensure the successful implementation of the NGP, all students identified by the Department of Education and by the Commission on Higher Education, and all government employees are individually required to plant a minimum of 10 seedlings a year.
Spelunking in Lussuk cave offers a spectacular view of rock formations and it also has crystals embedded in the cave itself, Bulut added.

Private sector and civil society groups are likewise encouraged to participate in the NGP with the assistance from the government, Baguilat added.
Other tourist spots in the province include ancient Spanish churches in Pudtol, Agora; and there are the Anag-sika-po wildlife sanctuaries in Cabugao, Maton Underground River, the Dibagat River, and the famous Marag Valley viewpoint, Bulut enthused.

‘The wet season greatly helps the tree seedlings to grow. Tree seedlings need a lot of water in order for them to grow healthy,” Baguilat explained.
Tourists can access the province through the province of nearby Cagayan which has ports and airports, Bulut said.

NGP was created under Executive Order No. 26 of President Benigno S. Aquino to pursue sustainable development for poverty reduction, food security, biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation and adaption.
Meanwhile, to harness the province’s tourism potentials with its natural tourist attractions, Bulut sees a need to formulate a tourism master plan that would set the parameters to further the promotion and development of the province’s tourism industry.

The provincial tourism council is doing rounds in the different municipalities to determine the extent of development needed in identified potential tourist spots, Bulut said.
