ZAMBOANGA CITY – A shipment of PHP596,000 worth of smuggled cigarettes was again confiscated in Zamboanga del Norte on Friday, bringing to PHP3.9 million the worth of contraband seized by authorities this week. In a report, Police Regional Office (PRO) 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula) Director, Brig. Gen. Franco Simborio, said the shipment was seized along the national highway in Barangay Poblacion, Sindangan town of the province at about 3:50 a.m. Simborio said they arrested the truck driver Basar Hassan, 46, and truckman Appay Sangkahan, 40, residents of barangays Talon-Talon and Mampang in this city, respectively. He said Sindangan policemen were implementing the election gun ban at a checkpoint when they flagged down the Isuzu Elf truck driven by Hassan.
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - A regional trial court (RTC) in Iligan City has sentenced a male offender and his female accomplice from four to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty for online sex trafficking of children. In a statement Tuesday, the International Justice Mission (IJM) in the Philippines, said the verdict was meted on February 9 under RTC Branch 2. The male trafficker was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment after pleading guilty to attempted trafficking under Republic Act 9208, as amended by Republic Act 10364, or the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act. He was ordered to pay a fine of PHP500,000 and civil liabilities amounting to PHP50,000 per complainant.

CAMP SK PENDATUN, Maguindanao – Police and telecommunications officials have seized more than 50 illegally operated cellular mobile repeaters and portable cell sites during law enforcement operations in Marawi City, officials said Saturday. ZAMBOANGA CITY – This city will remain under Alert Level 3 from February 16 to 28, the local Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) announced Tuesday. Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar, the chairperson of the local IATF-EID, said the order is pursuant to national IATF-EID Resolution 161-A dated February 14. This came about despite the recommendation of the local IATF-EID to downgrade the alert status of the city to Level 2 effective February 16. The national IATF-EID placed all other areas in the Zamboanga Peninsula (Region 9) under Alert Level 2.
