ZAMBOANGA CITY – The number of Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) surrenderers in Sulu has climbed to 16 since January 1 after two more ASG bandits surrendered to government authorities in the province, military officials announced Saturday. Lt. Gen. Alfredo Rosario Jr., commander of the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), said the two ASG bandits surrendered Thursday to the 1103rd Infantry Brigade troops headed by Brig. Gen. Benjamin Batara in Barangay Bonbon, Patikul, Sulu. Rosario withheld the identities of the two ASG rebels for security reasons except to say that they are father and son surrendered who are followers of ASG sub-leader Amah Maas, whose group is under the late ASG leader Hatib Hajan Sawadjaan.
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – “Ricky”, the informant who led government troops to the neutralization of ranking New People’s Army (NPA) leader Jorge “Ka Oris” Madlos last year, has received his PHP7.8-million bounty. Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and Gen. Andres Centino, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), awarded the money on February 2 at the headquarters of the Philippine Army’s 4th Infantry Division (4ID) at Camp Evangelista here, according to a news release. Madlos, 71, was killed in a 30-minute encounter with the troops of the 4ID's 403rd Infantry Brigade in Barangay Dumalaguing, Impasugong, Bukidnon on Oct. 30, 2021.

DUMAGUETE CITY – About 90 percent of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) deaths in Negros Oriental were unvaccinated individuals, a health official said. There were also deaths among vaccinated individuals but they had comorbidities like cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and other illnesses, Assistant Provincial Health Officer Dr. Liland Estacion said during a virtual presser on Friday afternoon. Negros Oriental has 750 coronavirus-related deaths as of Friday, according to Department of Health data.
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and local policemen dismantled a drug den and arrested five suspects, including a teenager, in Subic, Zambales Saturday night. In a report released Sunday, Jigger Juniller, chief of the PDEA-Zambales, said the drug den in Purok 3, Barangay Matain was a house owned by 35-year-old Larlyn Puno. Aside from Puno, the other drug suspects arrested were Nabel Mustapha, 18, and Asniyah Mustapha, 41, residents of Barangay Asinan Proper, Subic; Camal Macabatao, 46, a resident of Barangay San Jose, Rodriguez, Rizal; and Isias Inoc, 30, a resident of Purok 1, Matain, also in Subic. The operation yielded six heat-sealed transparent plastic sachets containing some 55 grams of suspected shabu amounting to PHP374,000, assorted drug paraphernalia, and the buy-bust money.
