BACOLOD CITY The number of fatalities in the wake of Typhoon Odette in Negros Occidental has increased to 40, figures released by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) 6 (Western Visayas) on Thursday showed. “There are 44 reported deaths but only 40 are confirmed or with supporting documents,the OCD-6 said based on the official report from the Management of the Dead and Missing Cluster under the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) 6. Figures also showed 19 others were still missing while 59 were injured. Of the 40 casualties, 18 were recorded in Sipalay City while eight were in Kabankalan City. The rest were reported in Moises Padilla, with three; San Carlos City, Candoni, Cauayan, two each; and La Carlota City, Binalbagan, Ilog, Isabela, and Manapla, one each.

BUTUAN CITY – The number of active coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases in the Caraga region has continued to decline, the regional health office said Thursday. In a report, the Department of Health (DOH) 13 (Caraga) said only five new Covid-19 cases were recorded in the region on Wednesday. One case each was reported in Butuan City, Bayugan City, Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte, and Agusan del Sur. The provinces of Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, as well as the cities of Surigao, Tandag, and Bislig recorded zero Covid-19 cases on the same day, the DOH-13 added.
BUTUAN CITY – Typhoon Odette has left a damage of over PHP1 billion to agriculture and fishery sectors in Surigao del Norte, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (PDRRMO) report showed. In its status report as of December 23, a copy of which was obtained by the Philippine News Agency Friday, the PDRRMO in Surigao del Norte said the fishery sector in the province and in Surigao City suffered around PHP1,122,241,500 losses from the recent typhoon. The amount includes damage to fishponds worth PHP264 million, PHP23.8 million to fish cages, PHP75 million worth of pump boats, PHP10 million in fishing gears, PHP20 million to other commercial fishing vessels, and PHP2 million to marine sanctuaries.
