CEBU CITY -- The DU30 Cabinet Spouses Association (DU30CSA) signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Cebu Normal University (CNU) on Monday for the implementation of the DU30CSA Scholarship Program in the Visayas.
Elena Pernia, DU30CSA vice president, said they launched the scholarship program in line with the group’s aim “to support and advocate for initiatives and programs that focus on promoting the value of education and the culture of learning in the context of national and social development.”
Pernia said the scholarship grant is intended to support the needs of deserving undergraduate students enrolled in selected state universities in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
The DU30CSA has already partnered with the Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) and the Cagayan State University (CSU) in Luzon for the program.
Pernia said they have chosen to partner with MSU-IIT because of its excellent engineering program, the CSA for its agriculture-related curriculum, and CNU for its outstanding education-related program.
To qualify for the scholarship, a student must be enrolled in a four-year course, must be financially in need, with parents’ annual gross income not exceeding PHP250,000, must not have any scholastic delinquency, and must be of good moral character.
The MOA was signed by DU30CSA director Kristine Marie Dino on behalf of the association and CNU president Dr. Filomena Dayagbil on behalf of the school.
Along with Pernia, the MOA signing was witnessed by DU30CSA’s Education Committee member Ruby Mamondiong and other officials of CNU.
Dino clarified that the scholarship grant is not a duplication of the Duterte Administration’s free college education program, but is aimed at providing for the other needs of the selected scholars.
“The grant is intended for the other needs of the scholar, like board and lodging, food, transportation, books, and school supplies,” Dino said.
Selected scholars will each be provided a one-year grant of PHP100,000, or PHP50,000 per semester, Dino added.
Candidates for the scholarship in the Visayas were also present during the MOA signing held at the CNU campus.
They were Rhona Villamayor, Ma. Catherine Gentapo, Sunshine Fat, and Geralyn Gevara, all third-year students taking up Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at CNU.
