Efren “Bata” Reyes will play Taiwanese Ko Pin-Yi in the 2012 Philippine Bigtime Billiards (PBB) Face-Off Series dubbed as “Philippines versus Asia” this Saturday at the Pagcor Airport Casino in Parañaque City. Reyes expects a tough challenge from Ko, a two-time WPA World Junior champion, in this event jointly organized by the Mega Sports World, BRKHRD Corp. and aired live over Solar Sports, Sky Channel 70, and Destiny Channel 34. Known as the first Asian to be inducted into the Billiards Hall of Fame, Reyes defeated fellow two-time world champion Wu Jia Qiang (formerly Wu Chia-ching from Chinese-Taipei), 9-6, in the Philippine Bigtime Billiards (PBB) Face Off Series last Dec. 30.

Wars of ancient history were about possessions, territory, power, control, family, betrayal, lover's quarrel, politics and sometimes religion.

But we are in the Modern era and supposedly more educated and enlightened .

Think about this. Don't just brush off these questions.

  • Why is RELIGION still involved in WARS? Isn't religion supposed to be about PEACE?
  • Ask yourself; What religion always campaign to have its religious laws be accepted as government laws, always involved in wars and consistently causing WARS, yet insists that it's a religion of peace?

WHY??

There are only two kinds of people who teach tolerance:
  1. The Bullies. They want you to tolerate them so they can continue to maliciously deprive you. Do not believe these bullies teaching tolerance, saying that it’s the path to prevent hatred and prejudice.
  2. The victims who are waiting for the right moment to retaliate. They can’t win yet, so they tolerate.

Parañaque’s Project FRESH reaps rewards

PARAÑAQUE CITY- February 6 was a big day for the beneficiaries and organizers of Project FRESH as their aspirations were finally realized - better livelihood prospects, decreased hunger incidence and improved nutrition status of children.

In line with this, Parañaque Mayor Florencio Bernabe, Jr. together with the project management team members recognized the outstanding accomplishments of beneficiaries during the awarding ceremony of the 1st Mayor Florencio Bernabe, Jr. City-wide Urban Gardening Competition.

“We are happy that Project FRESH continues to meet its objectives and reap rewards in form of reduced hunger incidence and malnutrition rate; increased citizen participation and productivity; and improved confidence and outlook of life,” said Bernabe.

Meeting all the contest criteria (barangay government support, community participation, income generation, and encouragement of children to eat vegetables, Barangay San Antonio took the top prize.

Other winners also bagged some cash prizes and gardening tools.

Project FRESH (Future Resilience and Stronger Households in the Philippines) was founded by Kraft Food Philippines and Save the Children, and supportedby the Parañaque City Government, Department of Education Parañaque Division of City Schools, barangays, and residents of the city.

The project aims to accelerate food production; mitigate hunger; present more livelihood opportunities; promote nutrition in schools and communities; afford means to enable children to stay in school and reduce drop-out rate; open new ways of learning for students and impart new skills for other household members; provide ways for children to overcome the strong dislike for vegetable menus; reduce the volume of garbage thru waste segregation, recycling and composting; and exhibit how vegetable gardening can be done in an urban setting.

Since January 2010, Project FRESH has taught mothers and children urban vegetable gardening as an effective way to fight hunger and malnutrition.

Meanwhile, Save the Children Director for Program Implementation Dr. Cecilia Francisco reported that the project resulted to a 9 percent decrease in hunger incidence and 39 percent drop in malnutrition prevalence among children in the city.

Last year, Parañaque City bagged the International Awards for Liveable Cities (LivCom Awards) Bursary Award with £10,000 financial support for Project FRESH.

Parañaque celebrates 14th cityhood anniversary

PARAÑAQUE CITY- Committed to serve, the city government of Parañaque has lined up service-oriented activities in celebration of its 14th cityhood anniversary on Monday, February 13.

Parañaque Mayor Jun Bernabe said this year’s activities represent the city government’s commitment to public service and care for the environment. “As Parañaque celebrates its 14th cityhood anniversary, we thank all the sectors that comprise the community for their support and valuable contributions to the progress, growth and development of the city,” Bernabe said.

In line with this, the city’s Social Welfare and Development Office together with the Tourism Office organized an educational trip for 60 children aged six to 16 years old from Bahay Aruga on Friday, February 10. The children were also taken for a tour at the Bio Research Park in Laguna.

Today, February 11, non-government organizations, together with youth groups and Marikina residents, will hold a coastal clean-up along the Las Piñas-Parañaque Critical Habitat Eco Tourism area.

Meanwhile, the city government has declared a special non-working day on Monday, February 13 as per Malacañang Proclamation NO. 329. In accordance to Malacañang Proclamation No.329, issued by President Benigno S. Aquino III, the cityhood anniversary of the Parañaque on February 13, Monday is declared as a special non-working day.

Cousin killer

Parañaque City Police is on a manhunt against the suspect who strangled and killed his cousin in front of his niece early this week.

The victim, Wilson Sonny Carcallas, 62 of No. 832 Gold Street, Camella Homes 3, Green Heights Subdivision, Barangay San Isidro, died upon arrival at the Olivarez General Hospital. Police said the suspect Oliver Damalario, victim’s cousin, went to Carcallas’ house at around 7 p.m. Tuesday when they engaged themselves into a heated argument.

Passport services at DFA-OCA closed on Monday

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Office of Consular Affairs (DFA-OCA) will be closed for passport services and document authentication on Monday, February 13. The DFA said the date was declared a special non-working holiday by the Parañaque City Government in celebration of Parañaque City Day.

Meanwhile, the OCA's Authentication Division located in the DFA's Roxas Boulevard office will be open to the public on that day.

DFA-OCA operations in its ASEANA office will resume on Tuesday, February 14.

5 old bombs found in Parañaque

Five World War 2 era bombs were found by the Explosive Ordnance Division of the Parañaque police in a construction site on Wednesday.

The bombs, which were dug near the Nichols Air Base, are ammunition for 105mm howitzers used by the Americans during World War 2.

Based on records from the Parañaque police, this is the fourth incident of such bombs being discovered in the city.

Bomb experts reminded the public to alert authorities in the event of finding explosive devices to prevent any untoward incident.

Parañaque Enforces Ban On Smoking

The Parañaque City government has begun enforcing an anti-smoking campaign.

Mayor Florencio Bernabe said the ban will initially cover Barangay San Antonio, Parañaque City Hall and the local government’s outside facilities like the F.V. Bernabe Sr. Memorial Hospital; Parañaque Livelihood Resource Management Office Building and the VCG Building.

Bernabe said smoking will also be banned in government vehicles, facilities, and premises in accordance with Civil Service Commission (CSC) Memorandum Circular No. 17.

The smoking ban will also extend to all public utility vehicles and terminals as reiterated in the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Memorandum Circular No. 2009-036.

Considered “Absolute Smoke-Free Areas” are all government vehicles, structures and premises; elevators and stairwells; locations in which fire hazards are present, including gas stations and storage areas for flammable liquids, gas, explosive or combustible materials; all centers of youth activity such as play schools, preparatory schools, elementary schools, high schools, colleges and universities both public and private; youth hostels and recreational places for persons under 18 years old.

Bernabe also said smoking will also be banned in identified buildings and entire premises of public and private hospitals; medical, dental and optical clinics; health centers, nursing homes, dispensaries and laboratories; public utility vehicles, transportation terminals, offices and buildings, recreational places, shopping malls, movie houses, hotels and restaurants; all places of worship; inside museums, libraries, auditoriums and coliseums both public and private; inside groceries, supermarkets and convenience stores ; inside markets both public and private; inside public comfort rooms; and public outpost.

“The Parañaque City Government is serious as it is determined with its anti-smoking campaign as it strives to have a healthy populace and a clean environment. We urge smokers to give-up this habit for their own sake and for the benefit of their family and the public.” Bernabe said.

He said a task force composed of barangay and city government employees, deputized citizens and the city’s local police was created to enforce the anti-smoking campaign.

He said the ban carries a fine of P500 for the first offense; P1,000 for the second; and P1,500 for the third.

The mayor said establishments violating the ban will be fined P2,000 for the first offense; P3,000 for the second; and P5,000 or a penalty of closure of the business establishment for the third violation.

Bernabe said government employees caught lighting up in no-smoking areas face a six-month suspension for the first offense, and dismissal from the service, and forfeiture of benefits; disqualification to hold public office; cancellation of eligibilities; and being barred from taking the civil service examination for the next violation.


Pro-Life Month

In observance of the month of February as Pro-Life Month, Pro-Life Philippines Foundation will lead a series of activities that “aims to encourage Filipinos to embrace a pro-life way of life.” Bishop Jesse Mercado, chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission on Laity (CBCP–ECL) will celebrate a mass to formally launch the month-long observance at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, at the St. Andrew Cathedral in Parañaque City. On Feb. 9, a healing mass will be presided by Fr. Efren Rivera, OP, at 5 p.m. at the Santo Domingo Church in Quezon City. Other activities include a pro-life march on Feb. 25, prayer services, and talks. Bishop Gabriel Reyes will officiate the culminating mass on Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. at the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros, Manila.
