TUGUEGARAO CITY, Feb. 16 -- The rat infestation in the provinces of Isabela and Quirino in Cagayan Valley (Region 2) is under control, according to Department of Agriculture (DA) Region 2 Director Lucrecio R. Alviar, Jr. | |||
In his report to Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala, Alviar said the infestation was slight, as damage was only confined to palay crops planted along creeks and irrigation canals. | |||
Alviar said that in Isabela, about 7,977 hectares were slightly affected, comprising 15 percent of the total area planted (51,497 hectares). The crops were on their vegetative and reproductive stages. In Quirino, about 1,070 hectares were also slightly affected, out of the total 2,065 hectares planted to palay crops that were on their vegetative stage. | |||
Alviar said the rat infestation was confined only in Isabela and Quirino, and in no other areas in Region 2. | |||
The DA, through the Cagayan Valley Integrated Agricultural Research Center, initially provided affected farmers with 27 kilograms of rodenticides. | |||
A massive rat-baiting campaign was also undertaken in affected areas by municipal agricultural extension workers, farmer-leader extentionists, barangay officials, and farmers in both provinces, Alviar said. (TCB/MGE/PIA-Isabela) | |||
