P10.9 million for 109 centenarians in Iloilo

Iloilo City — Living a long life has its perks, 109 centenarians in the city and province of Iloilo have found out.

Each of the Ilonggos received P100,000 under the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) incentive program for centenarians in Western Visayas.

The DSWD launched the program Wednesday.

DSWD Regional Director Rebecca Geamala said the cash incentive is stipulated in the Centenarians Act of 2016 (Republic Act 10868).

Ninety of the centenarians were from 34 towns of Iloilo and the rest from Iloilo City.

When asked during the ceremony for the program her secret for longevity, 103-year-old Bonifacio Lumawag of San Dionisio town said it was eating a lot of vegetables.

Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. and Provincial Welfare Officer Neneth Pador pledged an additional P30,000 for each centenarian.

The DSWD will also distribute cash incentives to centenarians in Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and Guimaras provinces.
