CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, February 23 (PIA) – A first in Cagayan de Oro City, the National Youth Commission (NYC) Northeastern Mindanao together with various government and non-government agencies will spearhead an advocacy event dubbed, ‘In Her Shoes’ in celebration of women’s month.
To be held on 7 March 2016, ‘In Her Shoes’ will be conducted simultaneously in the National Capital Region, Naga, Baguio City, Cebu City, Iliilo City, Caagayan de Oro City, Davao and Zamboanga City.
During a meeting with participating agencies, Evanesa Q. Pasamba, clusterhead, Northeastern Mindanao, NYC said that the advocacy event aims to instil awareness on the significant roles of women in nation-building and development.
Further, it aims to provide an avenue for men to support the rights of women as equal partners of the community and to continue to fight sexual harassment and any forms of violence against women.
Pasamba said the highlight of the event will be the walk of men wearing heels or women’s shoes.
Wearing heels is symbolic of men’s commitment to reflect constantly on lives and conditions of women, their struggles in a society where their rights are not yet fully recognized. Further, it is a representation of men’s solidarity for the promotion of gender sensitivity and equality and to make men re-think their attitudes towards women.
Pasamba said this is the commission’s way of drawing attention to the need for women empowerment, particularly for those aged 15 to 30, or the youth, who are in crucial development stage.
About 150 participants are expected to attend this event in Limketkai Compound and a program will be held after the walk in the 2nd floor activity center of Limketkai Mall.
Partner government agencies include Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Boys Scout of the Philippines, National Service Training Program (NSTP), Gender and Development (GAD) offices, Local Government Units (LGUs), Youth Organizations, Universities and Colleges and other government agencies and institutions.
