DENR - 10 conducts Trainor’s Training on El Niño

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Jan. 13 (PNA) -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Northern Mindanao conducted a Trainor’s Training on “Mitigating Measures in Response to El Niño Phenomenon in the province.
Lina Galvez, the DENR spokesperson in Northern Mindanao, said that the training also aimed to equip the NGP Extension Officers, Bantay Gubat and other DENR employees in the Provincial/Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices (PENROs/CENROs) in responding effectively during the occurrence of the forest fire, which is one of the effects of the El Niño phenomenon.
One of the measures, which the DENR is adopting, is the vigorous implementation of the National Greening Program (NGP) and protection of the forests in the provinces of Lanao Del Norte, Misamis Occidental, Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental and Camiguin, all parts of the Northern Mindanao region.
Topics discussed included vulnerabilities of NGP Plantation and its importance to inclusive growth, People’s Organization Mobilization/Organization of firefighting brigade, firefighting techniques, and reporting and documentation of NGP.
Galvez said that the participants discussed the action plan for the strategies, schedule, responsible persons, fund and activities to be conducted.The effects of the El Niño phenomenon include reduced rainfall, which may lead to drought, stronger typhoons, and higher risk of forest, bush, and grass fires, Galvez said.
